Well, the writing hasn't gotten better
iamkatesolo22 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Well, the writing hasn't gotten better. I want so much to like this show again. It has had some amazing moments, but the last season or so, the writing has been so lazy and on-the-nose. The character motivations and reactions are so artificial and contrived for the most part. Its been over ten years since they've seen each other, but she automatically goes to, "it's a scam"? I get they have a past, but it's a nuanced past. Unfortunately, "nuanced" hasn't been able to describe the writing in a long time. It's hard to enjoy anything that actually does work since the writing doesn't do anything to paint a believable world. It's gets a "Five" for everything else - production values, action, acting - and for its body of work so far. There's still time for it to better, so here's hoping.

Still Bad
amongpixels23 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Just like every season since the fourth, the final season continues to deliver bad TV, and while this may be harsh, I won't settle for this clearly inferior trash when we all know how amazing this show started out as under Dave Erickson's reign (not to mention this is coming out right after Daryl Dixon, which has proven to be an especially solid show). The acting is still particularly weak, Troy's right hand man is another terribly unintimidating villain, there's way too much reliance on flashbacks, the dialogue is stilted and low-effort (it's just characters constantly saying the same things; "I had to kill who I was.", "You and I aren't so different.", "I can't go back to being that person.", etc.), the pacing is awkward, Troy's return will never not being stupid and desperate, the ensemble cast have very little presence (e.g. It barely feels like Daniel is present in the final scene despite his extreme motivations against Troy. Also, why does no one else say anything about Alicia's arm? They all just stand there like NPCs), Strand and Madison's reunion was completely soulless, and nothing sums up the fall of this show better than Strand and Madison having a heart to heart conversation while two feet away from a horde of walkers that conveniently slow down their approach so they can talk about their feelings. The thrills, horror and nuance are nowhere to be found as generic, lazy daytime TV soap opera takes over and renders this show so weak, boring and inexcusable.

Ok, not perfect, but it's good to have Madison and Strand back
garyvines-0129024 October 2023
Yes, I know, FTWD isn't anything close to what it used to be, but I was really tired of the Morgan storyline, it was done and I was ready to move on. I miss Alicia as she was one of my favorite characters and I'm glad that Madison is back to her former self and Victor is back too. I didn't like either of them being bad guys as it kind of went against the heart of who those two characters were. Victor was always to me just misunderstood, but when he was written as a bad guy I hated him so I appreciate that he's back.

I like the Troy character being back as that I thought his character and the way he played him elevated the show. I (like Victor) never saw him as a bad guy, just mistunderstood and never quite understood why Madison tried to kill him it was the beginnig of the end of me at that time, but like an abusive relationship, I keep coming back more more.

I didn't hate this episode and the only thing really that's going to keep me going until the end is hopefully seeing what became of Alicia.

Solid continuation of season 3
crispycriscuolo2 November 2023
I was so surprised at how much I was enjoying these first two episodes at first, then I realized that they're basically picking up from where season 3 ended with these last six episodes. So many reunions are happening for the first time since the dam: Madison and Strand (the big one), everyone and Troy, etc. And the focus has primarily been on the show's original characters.

I began watching season 4 when it aired and got tired of it very quickly. I've seen a few episodes here and there but if you dropped the show after season 3, this is a great place to jump in. The atmosphere is the most vibrant since season 3 and the writing is surprisingly sharp, if still not perfect. Excited to see how it ends!

Its carried by the Acting but the story isn't unbearable
umeek-2157523 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The Plot of the Episode isn't too crazy. It's about Strand (Going by Anton) having a community and has a new family that he's trying to protect but also hiding his true identity from his old and new family. But the pacing is still bad and the 1 character focus thing was bad also. We don't get to see any of the fights they have or how Troy's group captures Strand Son which could have brought tension in the episode. The Acting and Characterization Carried The Episode honestly. Madison kinda felt like her old self, Daniel felt like the Badass Daniel we had in the Erickson Era. And Troy just Steals the Show. Colman Acting was good but the writing was meh. Like I said not too bad but not amazing either.

A satisfying start to the end of a messy series.
LouisLaRoux23 October 2023
The first episode of the ending of Fear the Walking Dead brought a nice smile to my face, one I haven't experienced since Season 6. Now although the writers (Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg) are two of the most god-awful television writers to ever exist, this episode quite impressed me, especially after the monstrosity that was Season 7 and Season 8A. Now yes, some of the dialogue itself isn't the greatest, the performances by Kim Dickens and Colman Domingo, are quite good, I would go as far as calling them good, just not quite great. Plus along with writing, it feels were clean compared to the first half of the season, this actually seems to be building somewhere rather than pushing too many stories into one arc and ending it in 6 episodes

Now another thing that stood out to me and still bothers me is the reuse of a scene from Season 6, now hardcore Walking Dead fans will only have noticed this but a scene from FTWD: 611 "The Holding" was reused for just a few seconds, and as much as people say, it's only a small iffy moment don't worry about it, it just goes to show the sloppiness of the shows creators.

Dead Ringers
hiramthreets22 October 2023
This episode was such a psychological thriller, more than an episode of zombie horror. Is it Strand twin Anton? Or is just Strand being the lying con artist who can't be trusted that we, the constant viewer knows him for. In the walking dead series we loved the main character/star Rick Grimes, as we cheered for him each week. Sadly here in this series the viewers like myself are cheering for Strands demise. His con artist and deceitful ways have worn thin. I love the show and its many spin offs but this character Strand, should have been killed off a long time ago. They got rid of Carl from TWD.

Still awful
tomslade-2493823 October 2023
Nothing has changed at all from the first 6 episodes except it might actually be worse which is absolutely crazy because in my eyes 8A has produced the worst content in this franchise so far. World Beyond is obviously a close 2nd and then Tales in the 3rd spot but at least World Beyond and Tales were awful from the second it started, ftwd was incredible for the first 3 seasons, then has been turned into the worst show, so its a harder pill to swallow.

Ive said it before, theres just nothing good about this show anymore. The way its produced is awful, the dialogue as everyone knows is some of the worst on TV, majority of the characters are cringe, im not sure why but all the extras are just bad actors and cringe, im not sure whats happened to Kim Dickens but her acting has fallen off a cliff. I cant believe people think its good and rating it like a 8,9 or 10. If this episode is a 8,9 or 10 then what does that make episodes like 5x01, 6x09, 7x01 and 1x01 from the main show?

Not only just as a stand alone episode is it abysmal, its made even worse by the fact that the Daryl show was so amazing and has so much direction, acting ability, dialogue, scenery aswell as good and likeable characters, everything that ftwd does not have.

Ian and Andrew should have been sacked many years ago.

"That's not Victor Strand?"
fountasalexander22 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Despite the writing still being mediocre, FearTWD returned with an episode that put a familiar smile on my face.

It may be illogical that Troy is alive, but this is exactly what Fear needs at a desperate last attempt for a good final half to the last season.

Still, some of the acting isn't fantastic with some of the cast, but there's not many expectations towards that anymore, I just want these last episodes to be entertaining, and this episode strives to be exactly that.

I think the fact FearTWD will end with Kim Dickens & Daniel Sharman in the main cast again, blows my mind.

The frame with Daniel, Madison & Strand standing side by side whilst facing Troy Otto feels like a dream, but gave me a massive shot of nostalgia, this is the first time I've felt like I'm watching FearTWD, the real FearTWD.

Troy was a fantastic character, and it seems he still is.

My expectations for this show have NEVER been higher.

Can't wait for the remaining episodes.

The series seems to be trying to return to its roots, but it is making questionable and risky decisions that could lead to either success or a catastrophic end for the series
fernandoschiavi4 May 2024
On the run from a hostile group, Madison takes shelter in a friendly hotel community run by Victor Strand who is now going by the name Anton, has adopted a son named Klaus, with his husband Frank, and hides his past. When the other group comes searching for Madison, frightened of his past coming back to haunt him, Strand tries to turn her over to them, but Klaus helps Madison to escape and convinces his father to help. Hiding from a herd, Strand explains that after leaving Texas, he and several others washed up in Georgia, but they rejected his help due to Strand's tyrannical past, leading to their deaths of starvation. Remorseful for his actions and wanting to live up to Alicia's request to become a better man, Strand reinvented himself as Anton, the man that he wants to be.

Madison, Strand and his people are captured by the hostile group who are revealed to be led, much to Madison and Strand's shock, by Troy Otto who had supposedly died several years ago at Madison's hands. Having survived blinded in one eye, Troy seeks revenge on Madison and to take PADRE for his people, exposing Madison and Strand's secrets to Strand's people. Before Troy can harm anyone, the group is rescued by Daniel, June, Sherry and several others and Madison takes Strand's people back to PADRE. Before they leave, Troy claims to have killed Alicia Clark and left her to reanimate, providing Madison with Alicia's prosthetic arm as proof of his claims.

"Fear the Walking Dead" Season 8, Episode 7, titled "Anton," marks the return of Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) after being absent for the first part of the season. This decision initially seems correct, as Strand is one of the most beloved and also one of the most hated characters in the series. When he became the main villain in the seventh season, the show seemed to pigeonhole him into repetitive storylines. However, this break from the character was a wise decision, as it allowed the audience to reset their feelings towards him.

In this episode, we discover that during the decade between the seventh and eighth seasons, Victor has formed a new family, which has changed him completely. However, the series once again fails to effectively develop Strand's romantic relationships. Despite being an openly gay character, his romantic arcs have lacked chemistry and depth since his sexuality was revealed in the second season. However, this time there is a new element, as Victor is not only a husband but also the adoptive father of his spouse's child, which could add layers to his character and deepen his relationships.

The second part of the season seems to return to the roots of "Fear the Walking Dead," focusing on the original characters from the early seasons. One of the indicators of this return is the re-emergence of Madison (Kim Dickens) as the protagonist, who had previously shared the spotlight with Morgan in the first six episodes. The season appears to adopt the same format as the fourth year of the series, with essentially two seasons in one. However, starting this second part with a similar story to the beginning of the first is lazy writing. The episode also fails to develop the new characters introduced, taking too long to make Strand interesting again.

Directed by Danay Garcia, who portrays Luciana and makes her directorial debut, the episode's direction is minimally basic. While there are some interesting camera shots and tense moments, the direction of the actors and action scenes falls short. Despite bringing a hint of novelty, the episode feels like a copy of the first, lacking in originality. It does not irritate or annoy like many episodes from the first part, but it also does not stand out. The series seems to be trying to return to its roots, but it is making questionable and risky decisions that could lead to either success or a catastrophic end for the series. The season continues to be of mediocre quality, with this episode being one of the better ones so far, but that is not saying much given the questionable quality of the rest. The upcoming five episodes will be crucial for the series to conclude decently and not squander its few good ideas, as it has had its share of ups and downs.

How is this so bad?
bretmannix25 October 2023
Just terrible... this used to be a decent show up to a few seasons ago, but this is just the worst. I couldn't help but roll my eyes several times at the lazy and idiotic writing and action choices.

It seems the actors know it to and are just going through the motions. All of them have delivered much better performances, but I guess you have to work with what the "writers" give you.

So bad that I wanted to stop watching about twenty minutes in and found myself skipping 10 seconds forward for the last ten minutes.

After watching this episode I have absolutely no desire to finish the rest of this series.

Such a wasted opportunity.

Anton: A Really Good Episode! [7.8/10]
panagiotis199323 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S8. E7) My Reaction / Review for Fear The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 7 ''Anton'': Episode 6 was good and I gave it a rating of 8/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. What's going on? Where is Victor? Also he has a new family? What? Victor knows how to speak German? I didn't know that. Victor is living a lie, denying who he is and that's really sad. Victor wanted to let these people take Madison and that sucks, I thought he cared about Madison. Victor says that everyone deserves a second chance but im not sure that he deserves a second chance after everything he has done. Troy is alive? What? That's really cool, I loved Troy. Daniel, June and Sherry? Awesome but where is Dwight though? Did Troy really kill Alicia? I don't know if I believe him. Overall a really decent episode, my rating is 7.8/10.

Victor Strand and Troy Otto are back but Fear TWD is impossible to save, bad writing yet good performances from them
Holt34424 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Danay Garcia directed the mid-season premiere of the final season of Fear TWD, her directional debut if you don't count the short film she did, what I could tell from this episode is how she nailed the drama and how she directed the actors, the scenes which had more tension and suspension was lacking heavily though. It was written by Nazrin Choudhury & Justin Boyd, which went from bad to decent then bad again. The cinematography was quite good, with some great shots and camera angles. The sound editing and musical score is fantastic.

Strand fights to maintain the peace of his new life after the sudden arrival of an old friend threatens it with ghosts of the past.

"Anton" is the seventh episode of the eighth and final season, it's an okay episode but why do they have to just start the episode without showing us how Madison got to this new settlement. Show don't tell. Colman Domingo is great as Victor Strand or Anton as he's currently going by, nailing where he's mentally, except for the scene he ran away which was unnatural and unnecessary. Other than that, a strong performance. I really liked Isha Blaaker as Frank in this episode, having seen him in The Flight Attendant prior to this, a good performance. Daniel Sharman is back as Troy Otto and was quite great, here's hoping we see more of him. I didn't like the writing for Madison at all, Dickens' performance gets reduced because of it.

Don't get me wrong I love Victor Strand but Colman Domingo can't save the episode, that opening sequence was hopeful but unrealistic, they also recycled a scene from season 6 (thanks to Erik Kain for pointing it out on a youtube video) when they were making the food. That right there is a new low for the show. The writing is flawed with you rolling your eyes on almost every choice they make in the episode, this German settlement though weird at first is actually something that could be done in an apocalypse if you think about how many tourists the country got. Earlier I wrote about the direction and how the tension and suspension was not her strong point, during Troy's confrontation with Madison and Strand, I was surprised by the tension but when Troy grabbed the hammer and was about to kill Strand I just knew someone would come for the rescue and what happened? Daniel came to the rescue. Up until this moment, I was actually happy with Troy's appearance and the writing but leaving the whole outside unguarded except for one man when he knew Daniel and a couple of others were chasing them earlier in the episode, made this whole thing stupid. Why Daniel didn't shoot him is a question not worth asking because of how the showrunners have butchered the character. I wish Troy, a three dimensional character and one of the best from Fear's third season, doesn't turn into a one dimensional villain. There were hints of it in the small screen time he had. The big twist in the end which we already knew about, him having Alicia's arm, is this beloved character dead? I seriously hope not, again this is something that should be shown. This episode was not very good but for what it's worth, Victor Strand is back, the reunion between him and Madison wasn't natural at all. Then again nothing really are on this show anymore.

Disappointing
javajones-6871124 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of the worst episode that Fear The walking Dead has ever put out. I actually turned the channel after 40 minutes because I couldn't take anymore. This episode was very disappointing and I really was hoping it would get better after Morgan and that bratty kid left, but then they bring back Strand and sub-titles. Even though both are annoying, I think I would rather have sub-titles than listen to more of Strands bull crap. Even the acting has gotten bad, as if no one really cares now that they know the show is ending. It's really too bad, because this show had so much potential and a lot of good actors.

Anton

I haven't had this much fun with a Walking Dead series since the early days of the main show. This episode truly had it all: suspense, cool zombies, emotional scenes, love, the most amazing cinematography, the most perfect song to end the show ever! And, of course, a nice surprise at the end.

Everything about this series is near perfection. The costuming is appropriate & cool & sexy. The set design is stunning. The locations they used are incredibly gorgeous. Everything about the cinematography is well thought out and breathtaking. The lighting they use & weather they utilize or fabricate really adds to the story.

This episode's storyline included a piece of our history with France, and that was very moving and touching. An excellent, special acknowledgment. The connection with Daryl's family and our history with France was nice to see.

The characters & actors are interesting & so talented. Walking Dead has always had a knack for getting us to invest in characters, whether we love them or hate them.

If there was a worst writing award!
dalehylton31 October 2023
Even in a show about the undead, bringing Victor back as a gay, German speaking good guy is such weak writing that it's an insult to viewers intelligence.

This is really scraping the bottom of the plot barrel.

The show writers obviously spent none of their strike time exercising their creativity in any way. The plot here is like a fat flabby effort after months of doing nothing, and needs a training montage to get back into some sort of fighting fitness before a comeback.

Clearly it's a sign to shutter up shop. This horse is clearly dead, flogged, risen again, flogged again, and died again ... repeatedly.

Now that's want we needed
nikitamedianik22 October 2023
Wait, that was a decent episode? With good directing and an interesting narrative? Wake me up to see if I'm dreaming. More of the finale's sentiment fits in one episode than the entire first half of the season. The idea of rebuilding the Strand, Madison acting like a classic character again, Troy stealing every second and really show menace. He is just a beast, Daniel absolutely killed it.

It was very good for the current level of FTWD, like a direct continuation of season three. Specialy in terms of a good camera work. Hopefully there won't be any big mistakes in the remaining time, because right now it feels like the series could still end on a strong note. Best episode since season six.

The return of Fear The Walking Dead
joelcenation23 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Finally! After 6 years of filler seasons and episodes, and horrible writing about Morgan and his delusional plans to save everyone, we come back to a fresh and nostalgic story that is about what we were interested in the first place: Madison and her family.

This episode has a lot of good characters, Madison and Strand reuniting and having a moment to talk about their past and Strand's new life. Troy being back and feeling like a real villian after the mediocre antagonists we have seen recently. And Daniel finally feeling like the badass he was in season 3 and not a weak old man with dementia.

This episode brought back a lot of memories and recalls from previous seasons, it made you feel like you actually want to see what happens next, and the tease that Alicia may not be dead is intriguing. It hurts to think that I could've watched this episode right after episode 16 of season 3 and still not miss much. It bothers me how unneccesary and boring the previous seasons have been, but this episode at last brought hope and the hype back to end this show in a strong way. Well done.
