Must Watch!

It is another one of Seth McFarlane's TV animated experiments. Just like the Family Guy episode were Brian & Stewie get locked in a bank vault, you will either love it or hate it. Personally I loved it. It took a regular animated sitcom and made it, not only into a drama, but a theater drama. The story revolved around Stan's birthday, and it followed his relationship with the rest of the family. Then as it's side stories, it displayed the creepiest, skin tingling, story that ever included Rodger. Great episode. Loved it. If you have never watched an episode of American dad, this is not the one for you, but the second.

One of the best episodes of the show
blackfyre199523 January 2018
I never normally write IMDb reviews but I couldn't believe that this had such a low rating, this is honestly one of the funniest things American Dad has ever done, very different from previous episodes (which I think is where AD shines), but had so much wit and humor I was geniunley laughing out loud. I even had to pause it towards the end, the climax scene is top-notch. There are a lot of 'theatre' in-jokes which not everybody will get, but the plot and dialogue is still hilarious and accessible to everybody. It's an absolute godsend episode and the IMDb rating doesn't reflect that, so you if you haven't seen it, go watch it and decide for yourself! You won't regret it

Only drama, no comedy
jdyresen30 January 2013
To sum this episode up, for me it's only drama and no comedy. I like it when sitcoms experiments with genres and ideas, (the series "Community" does it well all the time), but this time it didn't please me. The idea of putting a animated sitcom on stage, is innovative and good. Seth MacFarlane has done that before with great outcome. But unlike earlier attempts, he did not mix it up with comedy this time. I hope that in the future he doesn't try this anymore. I hope that he'll go back to he's roots. That he continues to make American dad the unpolitical correct show that it was. The show about a narcissistic, paranoid and close-to-evil dad. I don't watch American Dad to get my over-dramatic dose for the day, I watch it to get humored. The only funny thing about this episode is Patrick Stewart's introductions. I love it how he has used American Dad to show his comedic side.

American Dad! honoring and subverting the rich tradition of the staged drama
lance200005 April 2015
First: please stop referencing Seth Macfarlane when talking about American Dad!; Macfarlane hasn't had any creative direction in this series since season 1 and only provides voices for two and the main characters. The true creative forces have been Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman.

Okay, American Dad! Blood Crieth Unto Heaven; this is probably the best creative departure from the norm the series has done. Not as fun as the hot-tub episode, better thought out than the hurricane episode. This is subtle humor at its best.

If you haven't, at the very least, seen a staged performance, or read a play, then you probably wont understand the amazing amount of love that went into animating every little nuance of a stage performance. There is "mistakes", live action introductions, act breaks, curtain calls, multi-layered stages, confetti, all of which are usually unnecessary in a televised production, let alone an animated one.

This episode is brilliant for honoring an under appreciated genre now days, and it needs to be noted for that. This isn't Roger shoving things up his ass American Dad!, this is thought provoking, genre pushing American Dad!. It's really nice to see a long running series trying new things, failing sometimes (not here), and trying to not stagnate... Like Family Guy (I said it, sue me.)
