Dave Filoni has a mission with this show, he always had, just like with the clone wars and Rebels before. Everything he does has a function and this finale proves that.
When this season focused on character development for Tech everybody liked it, because he was the one that needed it the most. We have got to see the human side of Tech, the (kind of) emotional side, not the machine. I remember the episode he and Omega got stuck and had to work together to reunite with the team, I called this episode "picture perfect character development". Or later on the kind of relationship he and the pirate developed. At least she wanted to break the hard hull to get to the soft core.
So when he hang on that rope I knew that this would be the end. Looking back to part I of the finale we even got his death foreshadowed by the pirate saying that he has to take care of himself. His death was shocking, emotional and therefore the right choice. All this character development payed off because the audience cares for him. His death was meaningful, he spoke of Plan 99, which is of course referring to Clone 99 from the clone wars, who sacrificed hinself during the seperatist attack on Kamino. He now is a legend as well. Dave Filoni did not forget this character and it payed off right now.
This is yet another detail that shows that he cares for his audience.
When Tech said, "we never followed orders" it put a smile on my face because it is fitting brilliantly to the shows message. The show often deals with the phrase "good soldiers follow orders" used by the clones under influence of Order 66. Tech saying, that they always did the opposite shows the journey the Bad Batch has made. They refused to serve under a brutal, suppressing regime and choose to resist. That makes them heroes.
Tech's Death alone makes this episode a masterpiece but this is just the start. Seeing Omega's reaction after loosing Tech was so sad, I felt very sorry for her. But things can go worse and they get quickly.
Cid finally betrays the Batch and contacts the empire. The Batch is overwhelmed and Omega gets captured.
So, we all knew that was gonna happen but it still was shocking, especially after the previous events in this episode. It felt like eveything went wrong for our heroes and we get left behing with a gigantous cliffhanger. It is a shame that we will have to wait another year to get more of this magic but that is how quality works.
And speaking of quality, I have to mention the soundtrack. Kevin Kiner created a new theme that played during key moments of this episode and I directly fell in love with it. I will find it on Spotify and put it on my playlist. He is just one hell of a compositor!
This episode was yet another proof of how good Star Wars can be. If they make quality like this there is simply no competition. Look at Marvel, they are worlds behind that. I am glad to see Star Wars being well alive, still delivering the magic I am used to.
And for quality like this I am happy to wait a year or longer!!!
