Tale of an elderly man whose life has been dull and commonplace until one day he receives $10,000 in cash, his endowment insurance policy has matured. A bachelor, Toby lives in a boarding house where most of the other boarders immediately have all kinds of plans as to how Toby can spend or invest his small fortune. All that is except Millie, a gracious young lady, who wants Toby to spend the money having fun.

An uncle has charge of his brother's teenage daughter after the death of her parents. The two move to a more isolated country village. The teenager becomes friends with what her uncle and housemaid think are imagined playmates in what the girl insists on calling the "school room" of the house. Her uncle comes to find out from the local vicar that the house was long ago a girl's school.

When a chamber in a mansion manifests a loud, eerie whistling, Carnacki is called to investigate. He makes an exceedingly thorough search of the room, but can find no explanation. He is still not convinced of the supernatural nature of the sound until he climbs a ladder outside and peers into the room through the window: the floor of the room itself is puckering like a pair of grotesque, blistered lips. He hears Tassoc, the mansion's owner, calling for help, and enters the room via the window.

An American couple and their young son move into a house in Devon, England. One night, during a severe storm, the boy suddenly goes into a trance. When he wakes up he can't remember anything, but finds that he is strangely attracted to an old shawl and a rocking horse. Even stranger, he begins to hear singing that no one else can hear.
