Overall Alright. Could of been better.

Warning: Spoilers
Pretty much I see it like this, there was no apocalyptic event. The hospital they were in, which didn't seem like a regular hospital. More like a psychiatric hospital that gave off the impression of purgatory where 7 trapped souls awaited judgment.

The "Light" was more in line with Heaven and the "Creatures" were more in line with Hell. As the good ones in the group go into the light, and the bad ones had been consumed by the creatures.

Edward Furlongs character seemed to give off the presence of a Lucifer type being. Lurking in the shadows, only known by Jack giving somewhat not so good advice to him.

There were what looked to be "patient" files on the members of the group at the end where you see Edward Furlongs character sitting at a desk filing some away and discarding others in the trash. However it showed in Jacks file, he was a Doctor who drove his wife to suicide and that later had committed suicide himself if you stopped to read the obituary inside.

The one girl had even asked Jack at one point about his beliefs in Heaven and Hell. Jack seemed to have to come to grips in himself with what it was he had done before he could seek and receive judgment therefore ending the movie because he was the last person to be judged.

It had nothing to do with Schizophrenia or any other mental illness like stated in other reviews and compared in no way to Identity. The movie had a lot of potential but lacked a lot of finer details. Was very obscure. You never got to see any of the "creatures".

WHY?
Texan81 March 2018
Doesn't the shills realize that when they offer a 10 of 10, followed by raving about how great a movie like this is ....everybody knows they're not being truthful?

This movie is not absolute garbage, but it's not great either.

Isn't This the Movie That Guy Starred in?
GreyBird7712 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Some movies are so bad, they're funny - The Stuff. Some movies are so bad they'll make you cringe - Human Centipede. This movie, however, falls into the 3rd category of bad... the one that is categorized by looking at a movie selection a year later and thinking, "Did I see that one before or not?"

Everything about this movie just ranks as unremarkable. I saw a brief synopsis of the movie and figured it had potential. Almost 2 hours later, I'm wishing I had done something else with the past couple hours of my life though... take out the garbage, do the dishes... anything that I could show some result for!

The only portion of the movie that gave me the slightest jolt is when I connected "Noah" with "that kid from T2" (Edward Furlong) and it's kind of sad when the pinnacle of entertainment a movie provides comes from playing a "5 degrees of" game with the cast.

There's really nothing else to see here in this movie. It tries to steal premises from much better movies like "What Dreams May Come", "Jacob's Ladder" and "Flatliners" but fails at making an original, or at least entertaining story.

When the ending came (rather anti-climatically I might add) I was happy just to move on with my life.

Dark, and obvious. Nothing to see here folks. Move along.

Warning: Spoilers
Molly Hagan will always be Angel from Herman's Head in my mind, and I think the casting was an attempt at tongue in cheek attempting and failing for me by being too obvious. This movie is a very big mess that is just too obvious, and repetitive. Honestly I had to ask out loud at one point "We who Terminator boy?" as there was no sense of reality to the character played by Edward Furlong, and hardly any from the rest of the characters either. There is a lot of acting going on here, but it is the kind done in attempting to reach some form of egress from a bag which happens to be paper. The head towards the light shtick just goes on, and on. More even than my talking about it) I Enjoyed the first 5 minutes or so, it looked like this was going to be a good mind bender that would keep me guessing, however that quickly turned out not to be the case, and here we are now after a very over thought out ending, and so much less thought given to how they got there. Not recommending this to anyone, really there is nothing here that will make it worth your time. Some good actors wasted in what must have just been a money pit for someone. Move on I am going to.

Epocalyptic events can be boring.
song_of_rainbow16 February 2021
Let me quote two reviewers: "Stunning imagery" Second reviewer: "raving about how great a movie like this is..everyone knows they are not being truthful". I go with number two, he forgot to add "you know the person was involved with cash at some point." It's not horrible, more in the I'm falling asleep, wake me when something interesting happens category. If I going to get stuck watching dark gloomy corridors, it better be something like a zombie movie or the thing from Storage 24, not this group of people.

Darker Than You Think (Spoilers)
scottiejarrett71 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
GreyBird77 aptly defines three categories of "bad" movies. I liked "The Last Light" and will have no trouble remembering that I've seen it. It's a compelling psychological horror movie, a post-apocalyptic allegory. Seven survivors are trapped in a gloomy hospital following a mysterious event which bathed the outer world in intense light. No one seems to know what actually happened, but ferocious unseen monsters lurk in the corridors, waiting to attack and consume them. Strong characterizations give emotional impact to a drama that unfolds with more talk than action. Jack (Ed Quinn - look familiar? He played Jill Hennessy's boyfriend in two episodes of "Crossing Jordan") is the leader of the group, a strong anti-hero. Even as his deep character flaws become apparent, you're pulling for him to survive and escape the dark place that confines him. Noah (Edward Furlong) gives questionable advice, misguiding Jack and leading him to the ultimate reveal. What a marvelous glimpse of evil incarnate - a neurotic bureaucrat in a boring, tedious job. He has no real power and certainly no joy in disposing of the souls which have ensnared themselves in his domain. "The Last Light" intends to be dark and damning, and it certainly succeeds.

They always come back
nogodnomasters11 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with an interesting soundtrack and background of printed material over a wall that creates an eerie atmosphere of mystery. We find seven people trapped inside an abandoned mental institution. They have electric lights and water. They ration food, mostly strawberry bars as Jeffrey(Seth David Mitchell) has scarfed the better tasting blueberry bars.

The film centers around Jack (Ed Quinn) the leader of this group of survivors. The first 15 minutes introduces the characters and the situation. One person, Noah (Edward Furlong) lives in the basement and advises Jack alone. Locked in the building, it is always light outside with "those things" trying to get them. Harold (Jeff Fahey) speculates it is aliens, and is quickly quieted as discussing what "they" are is forbidden.

The days pop up on the screen. The film starts at day 89 and works back down to zero, although the plot moves forward. At day zero, the mystery reveals itself in case you hadn't figured it out. There are clues and the clues become more overt as the film goes on.

I enjoyed the character interaction and several of the soundtrack pieces. As an action film it was slower than "The Divide."

Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Powerful Horror Film & Superb Cinema
jlthornb5126 June 2015
Film maker Andrew Hyatt has written and directed one of the most disturbing, visionary horror films of the last decade and it is a cinema triumph. Stunning imagery of haunting intensity and rich characterizations bring unique power to this saga of people trapped in an abandoned hospital following a mysterious apocalyptic event. In the forbidding corridors of unspeakable horror lurks unknown entities that desire only to consume these unfortunate individuals and have them fighting for their very lives. The atmosphere Hyatt creates is overwhelmingly frightening and imaginatively realized with exceptional creativity. Edward Furlong and Jeff Fahey give superb performances and Yvonne Zima, Molly Hagan, and the always outstanding Ed Quinn are also do exemplary work. In fact, this may be Ed Quinn's finest role since playing Stark on the small screen in the delightful Eureka. Simply tremendous cinema, no one who experiences the spine chilling terror, unendurable suspense, and unrelenting horror of The Last Light will ever forget any of it.

Well written, made, acted, but there's no pay-off at the end. It's not horror, it's psychological thriller, without much thrill.

After reading the reviews I can see that no one
dochito14 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After reading the reviews I can see that no one had a clue what this movie was about.

The last strong scene in which Noah go back to "his office" was what the movie was all about. That old piece of newspaper tells it all: "OBITUARY: JACK IS DEAD" and he was long time dead, his wife seems was murdered three years before he passed.

So, what this movie was about, and who was Noah? Have you guess now? Purgatory, Hell, Satan, paying for mistakes that he committed in life. No Aliens, no monsters, he had his own monsters to deal with...and made things worse during his time in the purgatory, killing others, without knowing anything. The movie was about Jack. That is all.
