Hironori Tanaka is the GOAT
bencarterxd26 October 2022
Tanaka has done it again - the minute it was revealed that he would direct and storyboard this episode, it was already obvious that this would be a wild episode. Visually, the episode looked amazing, with great layouts and use of color, beautiful backgrounds and powerful action animation throughout the second half, in the fight that followed Power's short but effective backstory.

This episode covered most of the Bat Devil arc, a short storyline spanning just a handful of chapters between the first 2 volumes of the manga, and presented an awesome, cinematic experience - being directed by Tanaka and also waving goodbye with its own EPIC ending credits song performed by Maximum the Hormone. This was undoubtedly an amazing episode.

This was EPIC!!

This episode can be devided in to two halfs WHERE the first is good and the second is great and the final 5 minuttes.. INCREDIBLE!

The fight in this episode is deffinetely the high-light! It was visually stunning and very exciting! The animators at Mappa are really doing everything to make this show look like a movie! If i was watching these episodes in one go it would feel like watching a movie! Same level of quality as JJK 0!

I really connect with the characters despite it only being episode 3! I guess the goals of the characters are "simple but relatable"

The ending might be my favorite so far as it PERFECTLY captures the vibe of the show!

Mappa... WTF!

Warning: Spoilers
Mappa really went all out on this episode. I loved the denji vs bat devil scene, the animation was insane! I knew j could trust Mappa with the adaptation, and so far their doing justice to the manga.

This episode was actually pretty emotional, fleshing out power's character with her bond with the cat. I love how denji was showing no mercy on the bat devil because he knew what power's bond with the cat was like, and what it's like losing a pet, and in their case, losing a best friend. Part of that fight was mostly about boobs though.

Overall, this episode was great! Can't wait to see what Mappa does next with this series!

Final rating: 8.5/10.

Great but held back by CGI
tinlittlenerd26 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'll skip most of my praise for the episode because overall it was still great. The voice actors continue to give high quality performances and MAPPA's ability to stick so close to the manga makes the show incredibly enjoyable as a reader of the series. My only complaints stem from their overuse of CGI with the Chainsaw Man. The series relies on 3D animation quite heavily but for 99% of the episode it works. Plenty of series like Demon Slayer or Fate use CGI to get through less important passages more quickly so they can turn their resources towards the crazy 2D action sequences. My issue comes from the fact that they rely on CGI almost entirely for all the fight scenes so far. For the bat devil, I think this worked extremely well, however whenever they animate Denji in chainsaw form it just seems clunky and out of place. They repeatedly switched back and forth between 2D and 3D animation throughout the fight, which just takes me even further out of the action but of how different every shot looks and feels. Nearly everything else is exceptional, so I have hope that this cour will conclude with a massive hand drawn fight scene, but if it doesn't continue to improve then I think the show will end up as a ton of wasted potential considering how heavily it relies on the action. All signs point to greatness but I'm still apprehensive about this potentially turning into another Berserk 2016.

"Maybe this isn't the right time to talk to her about fondling her boobs."
Groverdox25 October 2023
Denji is still obsessed with boobs, and he is still doubted by his colleague, Hayakawa. Hayakawa and Makima discuss his employment with the Public Safety Organisation, and Hayakawa mentions that Denji has said his only goal in life is to live comfortably, after having gone without for so long.

Hayakawa is wrong: Denji has a more pressing and immediate goal, and that is to "fondle some boobs". In the first episode he talked about how he could never get a girlfriend because he could never bring her back to his shack.

Denji doesn't think he can get along with his partner, ex-devil "fiend" Power, because she hates humans. However they strike a deal when she tells him she has lost her cat, Meowy - if he finds the cat, he can touch her boobs.

Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for us, there's a giant monster bat standing in the way, and it looks like a job for Chainsaw Man.

"Chainsaw Man" is already shaping up to be one of my favourite animes. I hope it continues in this way. I love its deliberately off-kilter, punk-like bizarreness, and the way it seems to celebrate strangeness. I like its humour, and love its animation.

A love letter to Fujimoto
sakugaenjoyer14 December 2023
Chainsaw Man Episode 3 is a poignant homage to its source material, capturing the essence of the manga with a solemn respect. The English voice performances breathe life into the characters, mirroring the emotional depth of the original work. The power subplot, notably featuring Meowy, unfolds with a careful adherence to the manga's intricate narrative.

The outro deserves special mention; its animation is a visual masterpiece that resonates with the somber tone of the series. Accompanied by a hauntingly beautiful song, the outro not only serves as a moment of reflection but also showcases the meticulous attention to detail in bringing Chainsaw Man to life on the screen. This episode, in its entirety, stands as a testament to the show's commitment to preserving the spirit and quality of the source material.
