THE RED HOUSE is an amazingly wonderful look about a middle-aged couple's journey to the wife's home country in Asia. They travel there to take care of her parents after spending 20 years in the husband's native New Zealand.

But the story is almost beside the point. What is so wonderful about the film is the way that it's told. We get in intimate look at these people's inner thoughts. They can't communicate well with each other verbally, but their thoughts and feelings say it all.

The couple is played by a real couple and they're not really acting at all. I get the feeling that this film is almost entirely documentary, with a few staged moments for the sake of the flow, which of course makes the whole thing all the more honest. It does what it does in a fresh way and far better than anything else I've seen before. A lot of people will be bored by this, but those who are able to appreciate it will have the time of their life. Highly recommend.
