There's something about the existence of a Superman arcade game that brings a smile to your face; at least it did to me when I stumbled on this today at a local video game store. I never even knew there existed such a game, and the surprise was indeed pleasant. It's got a nice presentation (marquee and side art) and hearing the John Williams theme put to coin-op use kicks up the nostalgic feelings.
Sadly, it's a fairly mediocre beat 'em up, featuring our hero using brute force. And that's about it. You scroll from left to right, punching and kicking bad guys. Punch, kick, repeat. Then you fly through the air at cruising speed, blasting heat ray vision. And it's a surprisingly weak Man of Steel; a couple of hits and he loses a life. Not at all what I was expecting when I saw the cabinet standing there.
Still, I don't regret the quarter spent on this. It's not very good, but like I said, there's something about the presentation. And it still can't touch the awfulness that is "Superman 64".
