The game has option for 2-players at the same time, like other games of the decade as Double Dragon (1987), Contra (1987) or Bad Dudes (1988): player-2 is a Superman with a different color scheme than the first: red torso and legs instead blue, and gray trunks, boots, cape and insignia (outer part) instead red. Only the yellow part in belt and the insignia (inner part) is kept. The presence of this alternate Superman never is explained beyond to bring the 2-players cooperative system. Although this player-2 Superman reminds strongly to the DC superhero Billy Batson/Captain Marvel (renamed as Shazam in 2011 after DC lost a lawsuit with Marvel by the copyright of the name), there is no evidence that Captain Marvel was the visual inspiration for the player-2.
Emperor Zaas is a villain created specifically for the game. Never has appeared again outside of it.
In the game Superman can punch and kick the enemies. In addition, he can use heat vision in the flying levels (only when he flies in horizontal). In addition, the game features a special power-up: keeping push the punch button, Superman creates a yellow energy ball which destroy all the enemies in its way when it's projected.
Superman gains 1-Up each 50,000 points.
