It ain't good

Warning: Spoilers
It tries to go for a more horror route, with ghosts and spirits and jump scares, canceling out the main point the book was trying to create.

The book emphasizes how this certain kind of therapy, and the sexism that came along with it at the time, ultimately drove this woman further into her own madness.

The movie implies it's because the old house is haunted, and that the connection between the couple has been bad since the beginning. The ending is completely changed, and it made for a pretty weak movie altogether.
