A video short on the life and work of painter Vicente do Rego Monteiro, one of the key figures of Modern Art in Brazil, who at the time of the movie had an
exhibition of his works in Recife, his homeland. Monteiro is a known name for art enthusiasts and also because of the Modern Art Week of 1922 where he was one of the
artists who showed works there, but unlike Tarsila do Amaral and many others his name was practically forgotten by the majority of people, up to the point that his work
got recognition in Paris (where he lived briefly) than in his native Brazil. And I have to admit that if it wasn't for this film (and another credited on the site, released
in the 1970's which is lost somewhere) I would never hear of him.
Friends and people who attended the 1989 exposition talk about his life, work, the quality of his paintings which reflected a great part of his life in Northeast, with many artistic and modernist details, and there's a brief talk about his final days when his career was going through a renewal after some decades in obscurity. It's all interesting to follow, lots of great insights and it leaves the viewer in curiosity in knowing more about his works. Certainly Monteiro left an enormous legacy in the world of arts and one that needs to be rediscovered more and more. 8/10.
