(O_O)_/¯ Good To See Dane But Not His Best Performance
Foutainoflife29 May 2023
I'm not sure when I last saw Dane Cook, be it a stand up or movie/tv project, but its been a while. So, we've aged, lost some of that youthful gusto, physical comedy and perhaps lost touch with our demographic a bit.

In this special, Dane has set up a gathering in his backyard. It's a modern setting in which he is trying to go for a very comfortable, laid back environment. However, it seemed a strange venue. What we see of his home was nice though.

He discusses an encounter with a stalker, his much younger girlfriend and performing one of his earlier gigs. It was chucklesome but it's not Vicious Circle. I don't want to say it was bad because I didn't think it was awful but it felt like watching "dad jokes" attempting to be current and falling short.

I like Dane Cook. I hate this wasn't better. I REALLY wanted it to be because I think he's a funny guy. This isn't his best work. However, as I said, it was chucklesome. If you're okay with that, check it out but don't expect to be rolling with laughter.

Well that was something that happened

A bit of advice for Mr. Cook: Don't talk about your girlfriend in your standup. I know you don't have any problem with the age difference, but your audience does. The second Dane brought up his GF and their age difference during this special I think he lost about 1/2 of them.

Overall, this special was "okay". Dane sounds similar to his previous work but there's a lot of bite missing.

The longest part of this routine was an extended story Dane Cook told about a stalking event he recently supposedly experienced.

The fact that this incident definitely never happened didn't help it one bit. That I'm supposed to believe any celebrity in Hollywood wouldn't instantly call the cops if a stalker showed up at their door is laughable at best. Gotta ground your stories in the realm of believability for me to enjoy it.

The second story was about Dane's GF, and the fact that he quickly dropped it tells me it was going over about as well as it sounded like it was with his audience. (BTW he mentioned he was 49 and she was 23...but failed to mention he was 43 and she was 17 when they met)

Dane has apparently lost a lot of his audience, though. I was surprised no one else had reviewed this special before me, considering it came out over 6 months ago.

Oh well, you got 5 bucks from me at least, Dane. Enjoy your giant house and your teenager girlfriend.

Warning: Spoilers
The entire special feels like Dane trying to show everyone that he grew up and has more mature priorities and values these days.. immediately after telling everyone about his 23 year old girlfriend who was 17 when they started dating.

Generally, his comedy has lost all of its bark and bite, and this performance was more like listening to someone drone on and on rather than an actual comedian.

Maybe he was going for a softer, more genuine approach to his delivery, where you feel like you're talking to a friend, but what comes across is a mediocre performance.

And seriously dude, it's weird to have a girlfriend who's that young. No one who's in their 20's is mature or even has a concept of adulthood like you do by the time you're almost 50. Gross.

Warning: Spoilers
Dane cook is going to jail.

If you put yourself through at the least 45 minutes of this you will understand.

The $5 that the rental cost felt like I just bought a Bazooka stick of gum at Erewhon.

The stories were all too long. And it felt more like commentary to a bunch of relatives than a comedy special. The punchlines missed over and over again.

Funny enough, he mentions Kevin Hart's home special, which was actually funny. (Kevin's special. Not Dane's comment.*)

"Ugly people go to jail".

If you are a long time fan of Dane, you will watch this and go "how did Dane cook get inside of this other guys' body?"

To me, he looks like the villain on Jim Carey's The Mask (with the mask on*).

My wife... she titled this review.

Save your money. Unless you don't mind buying overpriced stuff. Like a good Erewhon customer.
