A way too short and mostly dull short film about body positivity
walsoos_van_robbe6 November 2022
First of all I have to say that this is the only episode of the series I've watched and I was only interested in it because of the countless articles praising Disney for having a short film with a plus-size lead.

Sadly I found this short extremly mediocre. It was way too short to tell anything worthwhile. The fact that the credits are longer than the entire short film should speak volumes. You could have done so much more with this premise.

It's also extremely uninteresting from a visual perspective. I've looked at the thumbnails from the other shorts and the look so much more creative than this. What I love about anthology series like this is the variety of art styles but this just looked like a typical Disney or Pixar movie.

I'm also extremely against the message of this film. Accepting yourself is a fine message in theory but not when it comes to body weight. Of course nobody should be discriminated because of their body weight but trying to normalise obesity and telling people to just accept their weight is absolutly wrong. For me it would just be like making a short about an alcoholic who hates himself for drinking but just accepts it and keeps on doing it.

Hopefully the other shorts turned out better.

ZYZZ! We're all gonna make it brah!

Warning: Spoilers
The short film reflect is an animation depicting a young female ballerina who is also overweight. Before the short film begins, the director Hillary Bradfield gives a brief introduction about the film. She says that the film is about body positivity and also mentions how challenging it was for the animators to animate the dance moves. She prefaces the short film by saying that she hopes the short film makes people feel good about themselves and how they look. She also said that she hopes people feel okay about the tough parts of the journey and maybe people need to get to the dark place to get to the good place and it makes the good place that much more beautiful. It is unclear what journey Bradfield is referring to.

I believe it is a bad take on body positivity because the director chose being overweight to be the flaw that people might be sad about when they look at their bodies reflection in the mirror. Most people can reduce weight and feeling bad about being overweight is actually a good motivator to do so. It's good to feel bad about your body if you're overweight so that you can motivate yourself to reduce weight and feel good after your body looks good. Therefore I disagree with the message in the context of feeling good about being overweight. In fact, it is unhealthy to be overweight or obese. Therefore the message that it gives to young children could put them on a path which leads them to become more unhealthy in the future.

I believe if Bradfield had chosen other issues that people face when it comes to their bodies like scars, freckles, birth marks or other deformities which aren't really in peoples hands, then it would've been a good message to make people feel good about their deformities because people cannot do much about it.

To conclude my review, I'd like to personally tell Hillary Bradfield that ZYZZ is watching and you've disappointed him. You're in decent shape Hillary, Hit the gym and make ZYZZ proud.

People miss the whole point of the movie

I lost count of how many comments i've seen comparing obesity to smoking or using alcohol... That kind of people are the reason why we need more of this kind of movies...

This isn't promoting or glorifying or normalising obesity. You guys don't even have clear understanding of what obesity actually means.

This movie is about mental health, body dysmorphia, eating disorders, binge-eating... Body positivity absolutely has nothing to do with it. You should accept yourself in order to take care of yourself. Obesity is a disease, not something you should look down on.

Please educate yourself on those topics instead of criticizing it.
