Subtitled fare always seems to consume me in September and early October as the Foreign Language Submission List for Oscar takes shape (it's not quite official yet but the submission deadline has passed). This is also the time of year when The Golden Horse, the preeminent Chinese/Taiwanese film awards, announce their nominations. Rather than a huge Academy vote, the Golden Horse is determined by a jury. Andy Lau who starred in Hong Kong’s Oscar submission A Simple Life last year and is best known internationally for two hits from the Aughts (The House of Flying Daggers and Infernal Affairs which was later remade into The Departed) is the president of this year’s jury.
Caught in the Web, China's Oscar submission, was apparently not eligible.

It’s not often that you find cinematic art in a prison shower scene. Well, let’s rephrase. Non-exploitative prison shower scenes are rarely things of beauty. (Much better.) This film’s opening is an exception though as a single man fends off multiple attackers in an absolutely brutal and bloody brawl. The violent action is captured through painful-looking fight choreography and camerawork that utilizes slow motion to great effect. Bones are broken, blood is spilled and the scene ends leaving viewers as drained as the only man left standing. That man, Eugene Wang (Nick Cheung), is released from prison after a twenty year sentence for the rape and murder of a young woman, and his first stop is to grab some ice cream and eyeball some cute women at a busy intersection. He spots a teenager named Zoe (Janice Man) at a music university who looks almost identical to the woman he was convicted of killing...

Fans of last year’s good/bad/insane Aaron Kwok starring psycho mystery “Murderer” can rejoice, as director Roy Chow and writer Christine To return with more madness in the form of “Nightfall”. Another labyrinth, over the top tale of homicidal intrigue, the Hong Kong film sees the duo maintaining their reputation for hysterical twists and revelations, and features an impressive cast headlined by acclaimed actor and one of the current kings of gritty thrillers, Nick Cheung (recently in Dante Lam’s superb “The Beast Stalker” and “The Stool Pigeon”), with support from veteran Simon Yam (“Election”), Janice Man (“Lover’s Discourse”) and the inimitable Michael Wong (“Overheard”). Cheung plays Wong Yuen Yeung, a man released from jail after a 20 year stretch for the rape and murder of a teenage girl called Yi Wan who he was accused of stalking. He immediately starts following around Tsui Suet (Janice Man), a...

After viewing director Roy Chow Yin Yeung's new thriller, Nightfall, I shall resist the temptation to label him Hong Kong's answer to M. Night Shyamalan, for the sole reason that it might be too complimentary. The director's debut, Murderer, was also penned by Christine To and boasts one of the most audaciously bad twist endings in recent memory. Their second collaboration may lack the balls-out shock value of Murderer's climactic reveal, but the entire drama revolves around a series of twists that, when considered for a moment, make not a lick of sense and ensure that a rather dull and uninvolving procedural thriller comes crashing to its knees.Inspector Lam (Simon Yam) is a veteran cop, haunted by the suicide of his wife and struggling to...

Another day, another Chinese crime action thriller, but as they’re usually so damn good, we wont be complaining too much. Nightfall is coming...Directed by Chow Hin Yeung (who back in 2009, brought us the nasty little horror thriller ‘Murderer’) it stars Nick Cheung and Simon Yam - it opens next month. As for what to expect we’ll let the trailer speak for (But it does look good!) itself. Synopsis: When a Hong Kong celebrity is found brutally murdered, his body floating in the middle of the ocean, hard headed detective Lam is called in to take charge of the investigation. As Lam zeroes in on a killer from the past, the murder appears to be a straightforward case of revenge. But the more that Lam pursues his suspect, the deeper he falls into a web of lies. To find the truth, Lam must dig into a 20 year-old case for answers,...

Nightfall is an upcoming thriller starring Simon Yam and Nick Cheung. It is from director Roy Chow Hin-Yeung who made Murderer (starring Aaron Kwok), which disappointed many viewers back in 2009. But judging by the newly released full trailer for Nightfall (embedded below), his latest film looks rather promising. You simply can’t go wrong with Simon Yam. I mean, I guess you can, technically speaking, but I’ve yet to be disappointed with anything that features the veteran actor in a prominent role. Below you’ll find a trailer and a new poster for Roy Chow’s upcoming police drama “Nightfall”, a motion picture that doesn’t stray too far from your typical Chinese procedural. Detective investigates a cold case, discovers new clues, unearths dark secrets — it’s not a reinvention of the wheel, but it appears to roll fairly well. Doesn’t that make any sense whatsoever? I certainly hope so, because I’m too lazy to rewrite it. Check out this meaty synopsis for more plot-related details: When a Hong Kong celebrity is found brutally murdered, his body floating in the middle of the ocean, hardheaded detective Lam is called in to take charge of the investigation.
