The first show to actually document and present the daily life of criminals in action.
I was stunned the first time I watched it. Never before had I ever seen a crime movie, show or documentary that delved into the functions of criminal enterprises.
Other docu-series are content with saying things like " Sex, Money, Murder ruthlessly forced out all competition by any means necessary". We then would usually get testimony from an ex-con giving vague statements about the gangs culture. Then some archival photos of Chicago or Sturgis and thats about it.
This show brought you into real criminal enterprise in detail as it lived and breathed. A few things I had an idea about but the complete disassembly of an SUV within 18hours, buying a chassis with a VIN number and reassembling blew me away.
A must watch is the prostitution episode. A girl outlines the her entire formula that is so subtle it blurs the line between real dating, perhaps the only difference being how the person was found and the necessity of easily returned/sold gifts. "I spend $250 on a watch for him to show I thought about him. I"ll make $10,000 over the weekend". I work for myself.
Contrast this with an almost 60yr old man with a pimp cup accosting girls on the street hoping to act as a pimp. Mostly he probably scared the tricks away. His redundancy and lack of utility was so dramatically apparent to everyone but him. He wasnt even doing anything protective...just wandering around the street with a pimp cup. Its so funny but so sad...but so funny.
