Paranormal Proof: Seen it all before
Platypuschow21 July 2018
At time of writing IMDB has this 8yr old film down with less than 60 ratings and no views, it is the pinnacle of obscure independent horror and I had the honor of witnessing this.....wonder.

It's essentially a found footage style movie following a family experiencing unusual activity in their home and documenting their paranormal investigation.

The first problem is that the market is saturated with these types of films. They are ideal for independent filmmakers as they are incredibly cheap to make and are meant to look amateurish.

For this reason there is very little originality left. They all tend to follow the same formula and that wasn't a good thing to start with, all these years later we're simply burnt out on this generic copy and paste nonsense.

Paranormal Proof includes all the usual sub-genre tropes, but plays down the attempted jump scares or actual happenings.

It's lifeless, dull, overwhelmingly unoriginal and brings absolutely nothing to the table. The whole thing is simply recycled, we've seen every single frame before and knew where it was going at the same pace as the writer did when he was putting pen to paper.

Is this the worst of it's kind? No, but it's against so pretty dire competition for that title. Paranormal Proof isn't one I'd even recommend to fanatics of found footage movies, it's just awful.

The Good:

Script isn't the worst

The Bad:

Entirely unoriginal

Unengaging

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

Every movie of this ilk needs a scene where cupboards are randomly all opened overnight

Writing an original movie is hard so best just poach from others and put your name on it

Warning: Spoilers
Not exactly a found footage film, this Kevin Hicks film is a well done docudrama of a paranormal investigation in my opinion. It goes so far as to show the actors with their film names in the credits a la "Blair Witch".

Thomas Daniel does a rather blaise performance as the recently widowed professor Marcus Gates. While adjusting to the unexpected loss via heart attack of his wife, Helen. He has two also grieving daughters, Jennifer "serious skeptic" and Katie "paranormal believer". When he can't explain certain events in his house, Marcus calls on his friend from the university, David Trayburn (Bryan Manley Davis), to help him investigate and possibly get proof of the afterlife.

Katie, Hannah Sloat, is more than convinced her mother is in the house haunting them in the beginning. Her sister, Jennifer (Nicole Skelly), believes it is all imagination, dreams, and hallucinations. Some she even blames on her father's obvious overindulgence in alcohol.

In a more narrative context, David is presenting the story while appearing in it. He somewhat overacts the part of the scientist. The character comes off as a dispassionate academic who, while claiming to believe, is scientifically a skeptic.

The roller coaster ride you go through of events tricks you into believing it is moving quickly while it is moving rather slow as far as the characters are concerned. Th audience is exposed to an hour an eleven minutes of typical paranormal tropes with cabinet doors opening, voices, apparent possessions, shared dreams with warnings etc.

This independent film was mostly obscure due to the flood of other films identical at the time. Due to that, it seems to lack originality. While the script and acting isn't the worst, we've seen it all before. There is nothing here new, twisted, or unpredictable - including Marcus' death.

I can't say it is the worst of its kind. Nor can I say if I had never see a movie with the same premise, would it be more intriguing. However, the title is little more than "click bait" for a movie which seems entirely recycled and full of overused jump scares as the psyche of all the Gates deteriorates.

Sadly, I wasn't even able to believe the found footage documentation of the events. If you have an hour and eleven minutes to kill and can't find anything else to do, watch it. Otherwise, skip it. You've probably seen it all before anyway.

I blame curiosity...!

What can I say?

I saw this on YouTube and was curious enough to end up wasting an hour or so of my life in pursuit of something interesting to watch.

Disappointment didn't take long to set in.

As there's nothing good I can say, or am willing to waste my time saying on this debacle, I'll be brief.

This attempt at ripping off "Paranormal Activity" (2007) is in absolutely every aspect... even worse than "Bird Box".

What a load of pretentious guff!

I am watching currently July 16th 9:50p.m. Will let you know my thoughts

Starts out good meaning has a great opening scene as to give you a background information on what is and why this film exists.

So let me start by saying this if people live in a house where they feel they have a haunting do not do a 7 day dump do a 24 hour dump and review so you can be sure to catch and investigate anything so if it's demonic you can over come it. Often when dealing with demonic entities they can over power a person over time this is why I say 7 day dumps are not logical.

10:40 p.m. July 16th 2023 - Word of advice if the actor or actress in your film can't not cry on que then be sure that and spot were they are suppose to cry change it to highly upset and sensitive you don't have to have tears to be dramatic just a lil fyi if the write or producer reads this. It is better then them hiding their face and everyone saying FAKE just saying.

11:00 p.m. July 17th 2023 is this a true story not sure I am going to do some searching online to see what I can find but either way if I were you I would watch it when/if you do please let us all know your opinion of it. Also I hope and pray all who read this review understand I am a religious man and I pray that all who are invoked with paranormal investigations be safe be sure to pray asking for guidance because you never know what it is your investigating.
