As Abby Lamb recoils from the aftermath of the Reverend Silence Laud's tactless termination of their engagement, Justice William Bramley finds himself unwilling to trust anyone following his terrifying midnight encounter with the Sons of Liberty. In an effort to ascertain the whereabouts of Laud, Governor Wentworth sends a dangerous emissary named Krepps, who interrogates Silas Rhodes and then terrorizes both Mary Boyle and Laud. Abraham Foxe, guardian of politically and personally sensitive correspondence between Laud and the Governor, awakens to find the letters stolen, and their shocking revelations anger John Hildreth and send him in pursuit of Laud. Noah Pine races to Portsmouth to attempt to reason with the Governor, and British army deserters Bob Wheedle and Tom Fogg face a press gang led by the merciless Sergeant Freddy Thicke.
