Worth a watch

Warning: Spoilers
Azhagarsamiyin Guthirai is one of those 'not-so-pungent-yet-so-good' comedy movie. This movie, like so many others, delivers a message to the public. But what makes it stand out, is the way in which the message is taken to viewers. Unlike many other movies, this movie does not rely on "punch dialogs" or "inspiring speeches". Instead, the director employs subtle humor and sarcastic remarks to get the message across to the audience. This approach is very admirable for its a novel attempt in Tamil cinema.

Ironically, the story itself deals with age old tradition that is still being followed in some remote village in Tamilnadu. The villagers of Mallayapuram believe that there will be rain in the village only after the "thiruvizha", in which their deity (Azhagar) is taken to the river on a wooden horse. However, they are in for a shock when they find out that the wooden horse is missing. Revealing any more of the story would be giving too much away!

Bottom line - A perfect movie to watch with your family.

Warning: Spoilers
Mallaiyapuram, a small famine-hit village near Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Year is 1980's. Village committee meets and decides to do the Azhagar festival, in which the famous god's idol (Azhagar) taken around the streets and do few ceremonies. The villager's are stunned to find the Azhagar's wooden horse is missing. Azhagar in Tamil Nadu has no meaning without the horse. Everyone is confused about the next actions. Finally they decide to invite a Kerala saint (a fake saint) to know the fortunes. All these time, somewhere near the village a man named Azhagar missed his white horse which is his only invaluable asset. Meanwhile, this lost horse is found by the Mallaiyapuram villagers and held at the temple for the ceremony. As per them, by god's grace, the wooden horse has come true to life. Azhagar finally comes to Mallaiyapuram and finds his horse. Villagers are not ready to give the horse as its a must for their festival, which they believe to fetch rain. And for Azhagar, its everything to him and his marriage too put on hold due to this. What's the mystery behind the wooden horse? Was Azhagar's marriage a success? are the remaining questions for which rest of the film answers. A true light weighted comedy. Mostly new faces in the movie is the big advantage to the film...

a couple of hours to enjoy...

Simple... Warning: Spoilers
Simplicity either be interesting or boring depending upon the type of person you are. "Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai " is a movie which has a simple story with a straightforward narration & depending upon the type of person you are it can either interest you or bore you.

Kudos to Suseendran for choosing this script straight after his critically acclaimed & successful (at box-office too) "Naan Mahan Alla " which was itself a different attempt from his debut "Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu". Though it may look easy for anyone to think that the story is so simple that he might not have had much work to do, it's never easy to present a movie in such a simple manner. The vein of comedy that lies underneath throughout the movie (though contrived at times) makes up for the script in which basically nothing much happens.

The lead actors in the movie are interestingly chosen & they have done justice to their roles . Be it Appukutty , Prabhakaran, Saranya Mohan or Advaitha , spontaneity is their forte & director has utilized that to maximum effects. But the same can't be said of the rest of the cast , except for Soori , who are more are less amateurish & at times overtly theatrical.

Theni Eshwar seems to have in-depth knowledge of the terrains of Theni & its lush green mountains which has come in handy . The visual treat is soothing for the eyes .

Ilayaraja's music is solid as ever. The background score elevates the movie while "Poovakkelu" & "Kuthikkira Kuthikkira" are soothing melodies.

Baskar Sakthi's story is simple & his dialogs are witty . Suseendran has tried to present the story in an interesting manner to the extent possible but at times one can't help the feeling that nothing is happening in the movie. Though he attempts to satire at the superstitious beliefs & customs of rural Tamil Nadu , in the end the movie ends up glorifying the same.

On the whole , "Azhagarsamiyin Kudhirai" is a honest attempt , can be seen once.

Bottomline : Simple...
