Ordinary Mystery
Hitchcoc15 August 2022
The tales of the old people was there to show us how pathetic things can become when a sort of tyrant takes over a nursing home. I thought a little bit of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The two folks in question were flying in the face of the indifference of the system. The solution seemed a bit odd. Geordie's reconciliation was nicely done.

Another decent episode.

The Matron of a home for the elderly is murdered, two of its residents abscond the the same day she's discovered.

Well, this was certainly a bit different, I'm not sure what I thought of it, definitely watchable, just very bitty, not a lot of meat on the bone as it were.

Will, the dishy Vicar is boxing now, his libido was in check, for some or it.....not like any vicar I've ever come across, what next? An undercover mission to Moscow? Where does he get his energy from one wonders.

I did like the scene between Geordie and Kathy, the pair haven't had a real moment until this one, and it was great.

One disappointment this series, has been Geordie's new boss, he was all guns blazing in the first episode, he seemed destined to make life tough for Will and Geordie, but his character fizzled out into nothing.

Anna Calder-Marshall and Bruce Alexander are both wonderful, two incredibly familiar faces, that seem to have been around forever. The pair really do show how it should be done, Bonnie and Clyde.....with a twist.

There's a lot of strands to clear up next week.

As always it's watchable, once again though I just thought the story itself was disappointing, 6/10.

At last we have a plot!
DoctorStrabismus20 August 2022
After a woeful first four episodes in this series, at last we have some sort of a plot vaguely at the centre, rather than just forming an absolutely peripheral backdrop to the soapie theme.

Geordie is still wearing that awful raincoat when everyone else is in summer clothes, which is just plain silly. And Will is still - well - just plain silly, but you need to watch it to find out.

The mark this time has crept up to a generous 5/10, and despite all the silliness it was not quite such a waste of everyone's precious lifetime. But still not a match on the earlier series.

Episode 5

Oh Matron. That's no way to treat a lady.

Matron Fletcher runs an old people's home along strict lines. She is not impressed when one of the residents Clem Preston, plays music over the intercom very loudly.

The Matron rather humiliated him publicly. Will Davenport is here and is not impressed.

The police suspect Clem of killing the matron. He has absconded with another resident, Ida Merryman who is rather taken in with his tall stories.

Unfortunately the mystery was paper thin and rather an afterthought. Matron Fletcher was a bit dodgy, getting the residents to sign forms so she can be a guardian for their estates.

The episode was more interested in the soapy aspects. Being the penultimate story of the series. Geordie and Cathy have a heart to heart and reconcile.

Will's love life tailspins. Maya comes back to him and tells Will that she has broken up her engagement with Elliott Wallace.

Geordie's boss Elliott Wallace has been badly thought out so far. Although he did manage a dig at Father Brown in this story.

I guess Matron Fletcher was a nod to Oscar winning actress Louise Fletcher.

Great series gone to seed
rstef19 August 2022
What a shame that this show, which started so strong in its first 4 seasons, should have devolved to this sappy and uninteresting mess by the end of season 7. The mystery in this episode came off as an afterthought by the writers who seem to be writing for a soap opera rather than a murder mystery.

Most of the run time was taken up with Geordie's marriage woes, the Vicar's relationship problems, and Mrs. C's health issues. In between this, they shoehorned in a bland and uninvolving pseudo-mystery plot of no consequence, though it did allow for loads of heart-tugging scenes of seniors trying to find joy in the winter of their years.

I've stuck with the series as it went downhill over the last 2 1/2 seasons but this was the end for me. I won't even be watching the finale.
