Fielding questions about Kubi, a period piece chronicling a few years of internecine feudal wars in 16th-century Japan, Takeshi Kitano dismissed some rumors he’d stoked. The film wasn’t going to be his last, as he’d previously suggested. In fact, he was already working on the next, a parody that would explore “the theme of comedy within violent movies.” I have no way of knowing when exactly the director will choose to put an end to a career that’s spanned four decades––the man is so prolific and allergic to stasis you’d expect him to keep working till the very last breath. But there’s something about his latest, Broken Rage, that makes it an apt summation of his cinema, and a farewell-of-sorts; hidden behind its farcical facades is the specter of a filmmaker revisiting his entire canon, leitmotifs, and style.

Takeshi Kitano, the filmmaker and star of such classics as Violent Cop, Sonatine and more, is currently making an untitled film for Amazon MGM.
One of the most famous stars in Japan, Takeshi Kitano, is making a movie for Amazon MGM Studios. At present, nothing else is known about what Kitano’s making; a statement from the production published by Variety simply says that Amazon “will produce globally acclaimed Japanese director Takeshi Kitano’s feature film.”
It also adds that Kitano will star, continuing a tradition that stretches back 35 years. The multi-talented actor, director, comedian, writer and occasional game designer has written, directed and starred in such classic films as Violent Cop (1989), Boiling Point (1990), Sonatine (1993) and Hana-bi (1997). More recently, Kitano made the Outrage trilogy (2010-2017) of gangster films, and the samurai drama Kubi, which made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

Korean media conglomerate Cj Enm announced that it will co-produce films and television series with Japanese broadcaster Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) for the next three years.
Previously, Cj Enm and TBS Group had signed a business agreement for joint production in 2021, which included scripted and non-scripted shows, films, and animation. The two companies will now bolster this collaboration by producing at least three television series and two films together within the next three years.
The co-produced series will air on TBS television channels, with one series already scheduled for a primetime slot in 2025.
In March 2024, the Cj Enm and TBS jointly hosted a creator workshop program for the first time, inviting around fifty top content creators to exchange creative insights. A second workshop will be held in Japan later this year.
“The two companies have established a cooperative system from years of partnership,” said a Cj Enm representative, about this collaboration.

‘$la$her$’ Blu-ray Review: Terror Vision Unearths an Obscure 2001 Horror Movie With a Killer Premise
By late 2000, reality television was considered must-see entertainment by millions. Whether it was the drama and backstabbing tribal exploits of Survivor or Regis Philbin asking for the “final answer” on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, this boob tube subgenre was all the rage worldwide. Meanwhile, Japan has always been known for their off the wall, physically demanding gameshows like Takeshi’s Castle and Kunoichi.
Writer-director Maurice Devereaux (End of the Line) rode the wave of reality TV in an ocean of Japanese game show craziness on a surfboard crafted from The Running Man to bring the world $la$hers in 2001. And thanks to Terror Vision, who have been on a roll with their releases lately, we have a chance to revisit this Canadian direct-to-video flick. Despite how the title sounds, it is not supposed to be a straight-on horror film, but a satire in a horror film’s clothing, so to speak.

Exclusive: The company that sells The Traitors format around the world and the Japanese broadcaster behind Ninja Warrior and Takeshi’s Castle have teamed up to create a physical gameshow.
All3Media International and TBS have already partnered to create one show, Lovers or Liars, which launched internationally at MIPTV this week. The duo are getting back in business together to create a second format, which they will bring to market at MIPCOM in October.
Speaking to Deadline at MIPTV, TBS’s Head of Format Development Shunsuke Fukaya and All3Media International’s EVP, Formats & Licensing, Nick Smith, shared the news of the second project, but would not reveal anything else, except that is a new twist on the physical gameshow.
“TBS is known for creating the large scale physical game show like Ninja Warrior and so for the second project together, we want to try out the physical game show,” Fukaya said.
