This particular episode centers more on the crew members working on the Titanic, with writer Julian Fellowes poignantly capturing their dreams, problems, and aspirations. Italian waiter Paolo (likeable Glen Blackhall) and British stewardess Annie (an appealing portrayal by Jenna Coleman) make for a nice and sweet couple. Paolo's stoker brother Mario (the equally engaging Antonio Magro) also makes a favorable impression while the raw desperation of the down on her luck Mabel Watson (a fine performance by Lyndsey Marshal) elicits sympathy. Moreover, director Jon Jones conveys a strong sense of dread and panic right after the Titanic hits the iceberg, with the flooding of the engine room standing out as an especially harrowing sequence.
