Thought provoking movie with ignorant previous reviewers

Warning: Spoilers
Dr. Hawking's presentation places the whole of physics and mathematics at a basic level and presents them in the simplest way possible. What concrete statements about god are presented are given as the logical conclusion to our universally accepted views on science. This documentary simply seeks to answer a question from a scientific standpoint and requires no acceptance of it. The arguments presented against it typically don't understand how basic laws of nature work and how the principles of physics work. These argument invariably invoke circular logic and do little to make a cogent point beyond the anger of what conclusions have been drawn using well-established and proved(e.g. just look at the screen, it was created using advanced mathematics and physics) scientific principles. Dr. Hawking seeks to show the facts that most take for granted and the necessary conclusions that come from them. It's a thought-provoking documentary that is well produced and makes its point. Disagreement with these principles is irrelevant and hypocritical as the principles are facts, not the alleged opinions of unclear authors that have been translated thousands of times by middle ages scribes, and are used in every facet of our lives. All in all, the production values are great and the point is made much better than most documentaries.

Raises more Questions

Warning: Spoilers
I will have to give enormous amount of credit to Stephen; he had done an exceptional amount of thinking and had given answers to several questions that I have been asking myself. I am grateful to him for giving us the perspective of a cosmologist.

However, I find his theory far from complete. In fact, there are contradictions in his explanations (and in science itself):

Throughout the documentary, I find the use of phrase "laws of nature". The question then arises: Who created these "laws"? For instance, who created "Newtons Laws of Motion" or "Law of Conservation of Energy". These are mere observations of Newton and there is no proof of that.

I once read a definition of science and it said, "it is just observation and conclusion based on those observations". Einstein for example, noted (from Michaelson Morley experiment) that, speed of light is constant. From there he derived his "Special Theory of Relativity". Note: He didn't explain why speed of light is constant; he simply "observed" those.

In the documentary, Dr. Hawkins talks about quantum physics where anything appears and disappears spontaneously. He applies the same theory (or "observation") to the Universe when it was a singularity. This is assuming the same theory holds true in the environment where the universe existed. In other words, the quantum physics law holds true in an environment outside of the universe. Following the law, the universe appeared spontaneously in this environment. However, there is no evidence (or science behind that); its just a hypothesis.

In fact, I wonder if science (as defined above), will ever have the answer to these questions. Because it may simply never have the tools to "observe" or, the complete picture may never be revealed to us. I therefore, could recall the story of 'Blind men and an elephant' where we cannot correctly conclude anything with science (for we may never have the right tools to observe).

This is where comes meta-physics and God. I therefore still believe existence of God is relevant. He created the "very laws of nature". He who determined (for example), why red light has higher wavelength and blue... shorter. Science cannot give the reason? If it tries to then, it will have to take the help of some other observation.

In nutshell, Dr Hawkins has done a remarkable job of explaining things to a layman. However, it raises more questions than it tries to find answers to!

God Created The Universe
Urantia1 June 2014
Here's my take on this flick: Just another arrogant atheist continuing to fail to prove that there is no God. His pseudo-scientific assertions and speculations are like tiny fragmentations of cosmic debris swiftly consumed by the silent darkness in the black hole of his mind. God is the One Reality in the Master Universe who needs no introduction, no explanation, no justification and no documentary. That seems to be the one thing non- believers can't seem to fully fathom: No finite definition of God using dictionary words or encyclopedic terminology will ever suffice this side of Paradise since Faith speaks faithfully to the believing sons and daughters of God in an entirely different language altogether, one where a tiny whisper in the night might contain an invitation-command that represents the beginning of an endless voyage of adventure and discovery that transcends the temporal limitations of mortal existence, an everlasting search for an illuminating clarification of supreme meanings and ultimate values and absolute truth that shall faithfully continue until the freely-chosen destiny-path that leads to the God of Love has been experientially traversed just from listening to that tiny whisper in the night instead of the dead-spirit shouts from non-believers who lie and say that there is no God!

Not Convinced

Warning: Spoilers
Aocording to this movie the universe started from a single point that contained everything necessary to create the universe. The single point was so dense that there was no time. The single point exploded by itself and released all of it's mass and energy and started time. Since the single point started all by itself this proves there is no God.

Basically that is Stephen Hawkings theory in a nutshell (or single point). I don't buy it.

Why or how does this prove there is no God? Why is it more logical to assume there is no God just because the universe has order. If this is logical, then it would be logical for me to assume that nobody has created anything that is logical and has order. No one created cars, airplanes, computers, etc... This is totally illogical to me.

Pretty Pleased At Having Worked It All Out?
themediabayer19 June 2014
My brain hurts. I can't tell which brand of ignorance is pushing me closer to spontaneous human combustion: loopholes and unestablished premises in the declaration of "science" or; poly-syllablic rhetoric from the kind of narrow-minded thinking that comes from watching entirely too much Fox News, and not enough Bible study during leisure time.

I am curious, though. Where does the guy with the shovel fit in to the "zero sum equation?" Oh, that's right, he conveniently exits-stage-left just before the crescendo of music and the dramatic overhead shot of the hill\hole.

All right, let's give Professor Hawking the benefit of the doubt—The guy with the shovel could represent the hardly- established negative/positive energy law of nature thingy (although he just looks like a guy with a shovel to me) but how come he gets to use a guy -and- a shovel for a single law of nature. Okay, I guess the guy could've dug the hole with his hands (wouldn't he be a sight to behold when he was finished?), but the shovel's certainly not getting anything done by itself. And I'm betting somebody had to pay for some (not free) lunch for the guy. People believe what they want to believe— even ridiculously smart scientists.

Oh, and before you start in calling Hawking a heathen or infidel, remember that Jesus loves misguided skeptics, too.
