The Prospector
claudio_carvalho1 January 2022
When the former software designer Rick Loomis is found dead in his truck by Melinda Drew, Lisbon and Patrick are assigned for the investigation. Soon they learn that Loomis changed his previous life to become a prospector and moved to Hadley with his new girlfriend Cheryl Meade and his son Jeff Loomis, using the savings that Jeff inherited from his grandparents to go to college. Lisbon twists her ankle and Hightower replaces her in the investigation. Patrick learns that the seller Wes Attwood cheated the prospectors to sell lands without gold cheating them; the local thief Scott Monroe uses to sell stolen prospectors equipment; and the local owner of a store Dean Puttock had sold many equipment to Loomis. Patrick plots a trick to catch the killer.

"Red Gold" is an episode of "The Mentalist" with many suspects that are narrowing in the end. The smart Patrick Jane once again uses this acute observation skills to catch the killer with the support of Hightower. My vote is eight.

The Mentalist continues to entertain
dominictomlinson9318 September 2011
Although other critics have said that season 3 of The Mentalist is going down hill, I still feel it's a sharp entertaining show with a good mystery every week. Yes it hasn't been as good as the first two seasons but comparing it to other shows when they were in there 3rd season it's not hard to see why it isn't as good. Shows simply just run out of ideas. Maybe not show like dexter or other shows with only 12 episode seasons. but how many times have we watched a Castle or CSI episode that hasn't been at its best. Simon Baker still amuses me as Patrick Jane and as much as I try I still can't see anyone else playing the role as good as him. This episode is in my opinion better than other episodes this season. It was interesting to see how Jan coped without Lisbon, but with Hightower. I do hope the Mentalist picks up it pace before the season finale, because as much as I love the show, it is for the first time getting boring.

Gold !!

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** True enough about the interest in Gold when the economy was ruined by Wall Street. Also a reality about temporary latter-day gold camps the prospectors set up for temporary living. A micro-view of a family spiraling into separation when the male figure is erased by a bad guy.

Again, the beauty of outdoor California is a perfect backdrop for a great little murder mystery. Featuring Jane and Lisbon's boss and her two irrepressible kids; and one really good looking brunette prospector Melinda Drew (Amy Farrington), the episode depends on people's belief in Jane's psychic powers. He plays them out to a real old-west climax that is quite satisfying. It's interesting to see how well the director used the way people brought their most important possessions with them to the gold camps while they work to try and salvage their financial existence. Take it back a hundred and sixty years, and you'd get a lot of the same type of people. Robin does an terrific job of playing someone new to crutches with Madeline's daughter saying she looks disabled; just too cute.

One of the things I liked about Melinda's part was the obvious disdain she felt (well portrayed by the lovely Ms. Farrington), for the powers that were. She was a successful prospector who knew her business, wasn't afraid to get dirt under her fingernails, and was enjoying herself. Investing in her business, and being a good poker player helped, too. The crooked land dealer, creepy hot equipment thief/fence, and rule-bound Madeline Hightower (Aunjanue Ellis), all play important parts with Ms. Ellis as the new Law in Town. Excellent episode, a 10.
