A different way of flying a kite!
mark.waltz2 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If Mrs. Madrigal's exchange of one of her joints for some teenager's kite doesn't make you adore her, then nothing will. Episode one ended with Anna meeting Edgar, and their mature friendship continues in this episode where he is able to lighten up in her presence. Two affairs open episode one, with Beauchamp takes Mary Ann out of town for a weekend fling, and Brian picking a girl up while in a laundry mat. Later on, Brian picks up an arrogant girl who thinks he's hiding his homosexuality by pretending to be straight, and it's insinuating that she only sleeps with men who are actually gay. Dee Dee, figuring out that Beau is up to no good, seduces a Chinese delivery man, and Mouse, having moved in with Mona, takes her to blacks Beach where he keeps his clothes on in spite of all the nude men present.

This episode is memorable for Mona's breakdown in the office, getting disgusted by a misogynistic client while giving an advertisement presentation on his latest line of pantyhose. Mouse ends up at the infamous "End Up", a gay club that lasted for years, famous for it's dripping contests. We are really going deep into the San Francisco night life and secret worlds, with Brian's visiting straight bathhouses and how lonely wealthy socialites dealt with their issues. Anna tries to help Mona with her termination because of her outburst, tying several storylines in together, and obviously there's something deeper in their relationship then what has been revealed.

Yes, there are a lot more plot lines in this episode which has now officially introduced us to all of the major characters of the first series. One will be introduced later on, but that character is so despicable that you would not want to see them all that much other than for the story arc to develop and end quickly. Pretty much everything that occurs here has a ramification later on, and we finally get more of a glimpse who Franny Halycon (Nina Foch) is outside just a bored, drunken socialite.

Great characters, disjointed storytelling

I quite enjoy the characters, they have depth and draw you in. But the different storylines feel disjointed. The episode consists of snippets of interactions between the characters, but they lack flow and cohesion.
