Great Episode but confusing conclusion.

Warning: Spoilers
Ok so the episode was great. Brought all aspects of this season's plot into the light. But I need to talk about the final revelation with Crowley... I don't get how they have any problem with working with Crowley to get Sam's soul back.

Sure Crowley brought both Sams back to be his personal hunting squad and he kept Sam's soul in the cage for insurance. So what? Better than dead. And all you have to do to seal the deal is kill and question some monsters? Sounds like a normal Tuesday night for these guys. I cannot see the negative here.

Hell, we could look at it this way: If they had continued on their own to try to get Sam's soul back then they probably would have ended up summoning Crowley anyway. In this event, Crowley wouldn't just say "Sure, here you go, now sod off." No! He would want something in exchange, like maybe the location of purgatory? The boys would definitely agree to this because it's a GREAT DEAL! Sure demons are untrustworthy, but you deal with that when the time comes.

Any way I look at it, it just seems like a good deal and I can't see why all the characters are treating it like some major transgression. There. I got that off the chest. I can be at peace now. (I made an account just for this btw so to the 2 people that might see this in the future: thanks for reading)

Too much info
zombiehigh1817 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This episodes comes with too much info that my head is going to explode:

1- Sam has no soul! OK we all knew that. It might be an interesting theory as how he is even alive but I'm willing to see how things turn out. Yet the more intriguing fact is that Sam's soul is still in the cage with Lucifer, OMG even if they retrieve the soul back, How will Sam handle those terrible memories? And now more than ever I wonder what about Adam, Have we forgotten about him?

2- Samuel is hunting Alphas and is taking them for interrogation to find out where purgatory is!

3- Crowley brought Sam and Samuel back?! I find that hard to believe but hey he is the King of Hell now. I still wish they burnt his bones when they had the chance.

4- Crowley brought Samuel back because he is a walking encyclopedia on the supernatural, OK I get that he knows things no other knows but the family loyalty thing! I don't know, if you wanted them to be loyal to some one you should have brought John Back. (I know John would never work for Crowley but I have to dream)

5- Christian was a daemon. I knew I hated him for a reason but how could such experienced hunters like Sam and Samuel not figure out there was a daemon among them all that time.

6- The monsters are building an army and are going to war. But why and with whom? the answer will come later on.

Rick Worthy gave as the best vampire version on the show, he was indifferent arrogant and intimidating. The episode was good but the pace was disturbingly uneven, it was very slow on some scenes yet rushing and messy on others.

Soulless and Revelations

Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER: Castiel probes Sam and Dean leans that Sam has no soul that is in cage with Lucifer. Dean suspects of Samuel and he joins his team with Sam to hunt the vampire Alpha. Dean sneaks out and sees Samuel capturing the Alpha and taking him in a van for interrogation. Sam plants a GPS in Samuel's car to follow him with Dean and they discover that their grandfather wants to find out where purgatory is. The Alpha escapes and subdues Sam, but Dean vanquishes the Alpha injecting dead man blood in him. Out of the blue, Crowley appears and tells that he had brought Sam and Samuel back from Hell since he is powerful now. Further, Christian is a demon and Samuel is helping Crowley to capture Alphas since they have an agreement.

"Family Matters" is an episode with many revelations about Sam and Samuel. The boring plot of this Sixth Season is getting more and more complicated, giving the sensation that the writers are lost. I miss the simple and effective episodes of the hunters Dean and Sam from the first seasons. My vote is six.

This demonstrates a lot of problem with the season on the whole
CubsandCulture31 March 2020
On its own this episode is pretty good. I like the alpha vampire and the big bro melodrama scene is an effective piece of angst. However it is an really clunky and overstuffed episode in that plot is needlessly complicated. The writers never really settled on who was the big bad for the season-it has some of the same problems that season 2 has in this regard-and the various reveals don't add up to much.

There is a labyrinth structure to the purgatory storyline that lacks the cleanness of say Season 3's Dean's deal or Season 1's Find Dad plots. The stuff around Samuel has to much of palace intrigue feel to it that doesn't fit. Ultimately the writers correct for how messy a lot of this material is and the end point works out ok but this and other episodes don't feel like *supernatural* of earlier AND later seasons.
