The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth
claudio_carvalho18 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After four suspicious suicides, Dean and Sam investigate the cases and they discover that the suicidal victims have heard painful truths before their final act. Their further investigation shows another death that might have been suicide. They visit the victim's sister and they discover that she had invoked Veritas, the Goddess of Truth, who feeds of the victims of the truth. Soon Dean becomes her next victim and he uses his fate to question Sam about what has happened after his return from Hell. But when Veritas captures the Winchester brothers, they hear truths about each other.

"You Can't Handle the Truth" is an important episode that definitely shakes the relationship of Dean and Sam. The funny dialog of Dean and Bobby is the relief of this tense episode and the surprising conclusion is violent and unexpected. My vote is eight.

The Goddess of truth
zombiehigh1816 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The show is back with the Monster of the week theme, this time it's the Goddess of truth giving us a very important lesson "When you ask for the truth you better be strong enough to handle it". After "Live free or twihard" Dean is distrusting his little brother, he thinks Sam is Lucifer, he can't trust working with him on a case or even being in the same room with him (so sad the brotherly relationship has gotten the bad especially when it was stronger than ever on the end of season five, but I'm still waiting for them to fix things up) Dean asks for Castiel's help but with no answer so he calls Bobby to figure out what's wrong with the younger Winchester! However Bobby gives Dean the worst case scenario "May be it's just Sam" (We can see on Dean's face how much he dreaded this idea, he was more willing to believe that Sam was a monster than this cold uncaring creature he has been lately) However later, like Bobby phrased it "Why is it like half the time you clean up a mess, you end up dirty" (You are very right on that Bobby) Dean gets cursed in his quest for the truth, and he naturally decides to use that curse to get the truth from Sam. (Not to mention some funny confessions thrown in his way, but mostly the hilarious Bobby confession about watching Tori & Dean and enjoys a pedicure every now and then, But It was cute that Bobby told Dean that he is his favourite, Thank you Bobby as Dean needed to hear that even it was unintentional) Dean goes to Sam for the truth but first he gets a call from Lisa who is still angry with him for shoving her son and demands some explanation which Dean fails to provide, She goes on telling Dean that his relation with Sam is unhealthy and that he will never be happy as long as he is in his life. (I strongly disagree with you Lisa, The Sam/Dean relationship is what keeps them going, alive and sane, they grew up depending on each other and their mutual love is practically what saved the world before, plus Dean was obviously not happy when Sam was away) Hurt as He can be by her words, he is faced with yet another shocking revelation when he realized that Sam is indeed Sam and that he is not Lucifer.

The brothers go on to hunt the Veritas but when she knocked them out and they wake up tied up, She plays a game of truth on them, She goes for Dean first demanding to know his feelings about his brother, Dean's reply comes sad and heartbreaking as he says he is better now as he before wanted to kill him in his sleep but he realized that his brother is just acting like him and that he has learned that he is none but a killer not a family man and will never be. When she claims the truth from Sam he goes on lying to her face to frighten her enough to say that he is not human. However after the brothers free themselves and take her down, Dean holds a knife on his brother claiming to know what he is. Sam confesses that there is something wrong with him and that he is a better hunter that he ever was, but he can't feel anything and that he let his brother get turned because he knew there was a cure and that Dean could handle himself in the vampire nest, but he couldn't care to think about his own safety in case he drank human blood and ruin his chance for a cure, he admitted he needs help and that he doesn't know what's wrong. Dean shockingly embarks in a wave of rage hitting Sam bloody and knocking him into unconsciousness.

Some people are angry with the final scene, I'm shocked but I think it's justifiable enough, for Sam not only jeopardized his brother's life but he also ruined Dean's relationship with his new family and above all Dean with angry with Sam for turning into a version of himself, so I think Dean was pouring out all his anger with himself on Sam.

The episode ends with many questions lingering in my head: Does Sam really think he needs help? Is Sam happy with not feeling any thing because instead he will face the terrible outcomes of his time in Hell? Will Dean come to his brother's rescue and fix him?

Goddess Veritas = An Empress and a Saint...
pmitsi-125 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I like this episode in a sense that shows once again how many lies people say everyday, even to the ones they love - especially to them. However, I personally, dislike lies in any manner (even the so-called "white lies"), and this is why I am making this review.

The picture of "Goddess of Truth, Veritas" is not a picture of a Goddess at all. The woman in the picture, which is actually a mosaic, is of a Byzantine Empress(!), the consort of Emperor Justinian I. She is considered a Saint in the Orthodox Christian Church.

One can check that just my googling "Theodora, Wikipedia".

OK, I don't expect the show to be 100% accurate, after all is a sci-fi series. However, given the amount of research taking place before every episode (that's why is such a great production), is a pity to see such profound errors.

Quite easily my favorite episode of Supernatural
zombiefan897 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is the episode when Dean finally catches on to how messed up Sam is. Although, the whole "Sam's soul" arc didn't seem like that important of an ordeal to consume nearly an entire season, and part of another one. Although, it is very interesting to see Supernatural's take on just what a soul does, but they really over did it. Okay, so they spend several episodes just getting Sam's soul back, then Death puts up a "wall" to keep him sane, and then way into season seven, Castiel just takes on the "scar" I'm guessing, himself. Yeah, the soul thing was way over used, right? However, I still love Veritas's reaction to same lying to her. The way she looked at Sam like he had two heads and a tail, and Dean's face when Verintas looks at him.

Truth behind Sam
shwetafabm20 June 2020
Mystery of Sam was done pretty great in the season The murders especially the first one was intriguing and creepy The monster was ok I guess Dean got a little too easy on the truth tho, seemed like it could be much more brutal

Everything is too easy and plotty
CubsandCulture31 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a good example of the show's (especially in the later years) to contrive a case to reveal an ongoing story issue in the season. This only exists to reveal that Sam is missing his soul and the how Dean finds that out (some of this is confirmed in the next episode) is contrived in a number of ways. The whole case being about compelling people to not lie is one. The red herring of the Gabriel's Horn of Truth getting Cas to be involved is another. This episode feels like a procedural and the case is missing the essential spark that makes the best episodes work. It is filler.

Sam is lying.
snwbatz3 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
For a filler episode it's actually not that bad. Yeah admittedly the episode really only exists to let us know something's wrong with Sam. But the way they lead to it is actually pretty clever. The idea that people can't lie is interesting. And later when Sam lies to Veritas she's shocked because no one can lie to her but Sam does. You're wondering how that's possible. Obviously later when it turns out Sam doesn't have a soul it makes sense. But it's very clever how lead to Sam revealing that he's different.

I'm just upset
slomski-2909216 April 2022
I've been watching supernatural for years and this is my 3rd time rewatching. Idk how I didn't notice it before. I probably just wasn't focused on the episode the multiple times I have watched it but season 6 episode 6 is just....idk...too much for me. The begging is heart wrenching and sad. I fell like someone who is down would just feel more down after watching this episode and I know it's just a show but wow did they make that hit hard. 😢

One of the most gross episodes
Aries_Primal29 August 2023
To Re-watch 15 seasons you must consider me as a fan. I love this show no matter how sloppy it became after a while. But this... This was idiotic stupid excuse of an episode. Disturbing scenes, too personal moments, nothing to do with the classic Sam and Dean hunting. No need to put guts in episode to make it strong and cool. Are you trying to outmatch The Walking Dead or what? It was so disgusting and so tasteless that I forgot what all this was about. Made up story, bad performed and absolutely worthless actress, waste of a pretty face. So gross scenes, so bad everything. But you know what they say, what is seen can't be unseen.
