Good theme wasted due to poor direction
gautushah27 July 2022
Excellent performance by Kumud Mishra as dr Arora. However other characters of the series like Firangi etc are not only loud, but to great extent boring all due to bad characterisation and direction. I think director and screenwriter not clear whether to make the series humorous or serious. Theme to give good message is lost due to poor direction and screenplay. It seems Imtiaz Ali has lost his golden touch. My giving 7 rating is only because of great performance by kumud Mishra.

Disappointing!
mayankshukla140423 July 2022
Watched Dr. Arora on SonyLIV. Found the show a bit underwhelming. Had expected it to be a sensitive drama about a sexologist and his patients. It instead tries hard to be a comedy drama failing on both the counts. It works best when the lead Kumud Mishra is around.

The sub plots fail to engage and drag in places. Watch out for Vidya Malvade though whose track with Kumud Mishra is one of the strong points of Dr. Arora. The show has some lovely music as well. Overall even with all the noble intentions it falters in execution.

Theme is great but poor execution
kirsingh-075983 August 2022
The series overall is kind of Slow and revolves around Dr. Arora and his life.

There are areas where there were certainly Life lessons given however some scenes just go beyond being natural. The main character Kumud Mishra has done a fantastic job. Imtiaz Ali has over time tried to tell the story in the very same manner.

Show portrays the Indian mentality and the shyness over sharing the sexual problems. The subject has been portrayed off late in different movies. Some comic scenes are decent but not excellent that you will remember for long.

Overall I would not call it a Must watch but if you have nothing to watch you could choose this.

Best series
smitapandeyrtr14 August 2022
People who are mature should only watch it. Those who think its about sexuality and this and that they shouldn't watch it. Good comedy acting also is good. Its not only about gupt rog it also contains best comedy. I dont know from which area people are coming who r giving such less rating to this series. Seriously if one could watch altbalaji series one can also watch this.

Watch it for Kumud Mishra's art, much more than the title would suggest
amiableanoop28 July 2022
The title makes it feel like a titillating show created only to grab eyeballs with the now perfected art of sex, violence and profanity only in India made series.

This one though is though nothing like that.

The back story is so sweet, with a very well on screen chemistry between Kumud and Vidya.

The long forgotten Vivek Mushran really shines - quintessential 90s touch made possible with him in the scene.

There are a few characters like the Baba which are totally irrelevant but the MLA acts so well.

A strong suite is the dialogues.

When the MLA blurts out abuses, his uncle says - "grassroot language does not make one a grassroot leader".

A bit stretched it might be, but definitely watchable.

Not binge worthy, very slow plot progress
amar7569 August 2022
Performances by actors are great but the screenplay just drags on. Too many flashbacks, editing could have been better.

The topic is interesting and had scope if characters were fleshed out more.

And finally there is no resolution of many plot lines by the end of episode 8. What happened with the sex worker? What was the result of new mahila shakti morcha? Why did Baba disappear from plot? And nothing was shown about how vaishali deals with her own family.

So much of wastage of time and yet climax was so open ended.

Kumud Mishra ji is so so wonderful in his portrayal of Dr. Arora
sandipmalierl25 July 2022
Another comforting story.. So good to watch.. Kumud Mishra ji is so so wonderful in his portrayal of Dr. Arora.. And thank you sir for Dr Arora on Sony Liv.

Quite enjoyed the show, quite liked what it's trying to do, in spite of certain issues, like a couple of subplots I didn't quite care for. Kumud Mishra is fantastic, as are Vivek Mushran, Anushkaa Luhar and Sandeepa Dhar.

Worth a shot!

Expected more than this
prithusrivastava24 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The series is painfully slow and unpredictable. Anything is happening and irrelevant drama is shown. Some characters like the Bagla family or Singahara are intolerable but are given more than required screen presence. Kumud Mishra is the only saving grace and shows class here, and mixes in any emotions needed. However personally I find the last two episodes very cringy and disappointing.

I was expecting more in the initial episodes but it dropped off a small cliff of excitement. Too many characters and too many side plots distract from main story line. The flashbacks of doctors failed romance are also more than required and ultimately turn to a headache.

I feel like I wasted 6-8 hours of my life.

Disconnected and illogical sub plots
ishwar_jindal21 August 2022
Surely waste of time. Multiple sub plots which are raised with expectation that they will lead to something meaningful ended up being totally disconnected, never lead any logical end. It is as if writer forget to properly write the story.

Worst screenplay. You will definitely be disappointed.

Theme may be good but execution is very very poor.

Average Social Series...
smithysouravshekhar2 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The series has been made a bit different, it has been shown that a woman, a girl, if her personal interest is not fulfilled, then she can leave you no matter who you are. In this, the shame towards the secret disease spread in the society has also been shown.

The one where they normalise stalking, and other dumb things
eshekaila24 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Given that the trailer set high expectations, and one was actually waiting for this to release on the 22nd of July, the letdown hurt twice as much. But the review is being written after a cooling off period, so the emotions are subdued, and I have tried to write a regular review. (yes, my regular reviews are this detailed)

What was this?

I am a little confused about the genre of this series.

This is not an awareness series (unless you count the name of the condition mentioned briefly on the screen).

This is not a love story.

It is not a mystery series of why his wife left him in the first place. Because that mystery never gets solved.

This is not a story of relationships, because all characters are so poorly sketched and even more shallowly presented.

If the idea was to showcase that Indians are not as open to their problems in bed as our woke metro brethren, that also flops, because, as the director already knows, sexologists are found only in small town India. And they make enough moneys to put large scale full wall ads from where the makers have shamelessly picked the name of the series. (I hope they sent a small royalty cheque to the original Dr. Arora, whose name also they have blatantly just picked up).

I am not sure, honestly, what this is. The short answer is, it really isn't anything. Its just that random mishmash that amounts to absolutely nothing.

Why this series should not have seen the light of day/night/OTT I don't know any baba that gives private meetings of a certain kind to all female devotees.

I also don't know any SP who walks as comically as the character of SP Tomar.

I don't know any three time MLA who gets so publicly humiliated by his bedridden father at all times.

Women do not randomly invite male neighbours home, nor scream to them at night. That is not how colonies in small town India operate.

But most offensive of all, was the stalking of his ex-wife by Dr. Vishesh Arora. By the fourth episode, it is perfectly easy to start despising the character and wondering why he is stalking someone who so completely rejected him more than 17 years ago. What kind of content is being sold with the background music of a romantic song? A random romantic song playing in the background, a middle aged man looking wistfully into the distance, does not make stalking ok. I can't remember when I was that angry about the way women are projected on screen. (hence, the cooling off period before the review)

There is no storyline.

The characters, like I mentioned already, are shallow and poorly sketched. Make that not sketched at all. Its like a series of random caricatures that one forcibly fits into a room and then tries to build something around them.

The dialogues are so forgettable that i can't remember a single representative one, and I usually write a couple of representative dialogues in the review.

The art direction is as cliched as it gets. Neither authentic nor intriguing.

The other technical aspects - lighting, sound, cinematography, research, well, lets just say they are being omitted for a reason. The director omitted them from his work too.

Only one thing they did well - the casting. A script so laughable, so wrong at so many levels, needed superb acting. And the cast - lead and ensemble, does just that. Each actor is well chosen.

What their writer forgot to do in the script, the casting director has done in the auditions - and that is doubly laudable because s/he had so little to go on.

One line review: This is the work of a woke director sitting in some metro who does not know his/her characters, their stories, their life beliefs, even their mannerisms, but insists on telling a story about them.

Extremely delightful to watch.
akshay-5544628 July 2022
Wow, wow. Indian cinema reaching top height's. Thanks for making this beautiful piece of Art.

A1 cast, A1 writing, A1 on the sex education my government never gave me during my schooling time in the most delightful way possible. Definitely a kill on the stereotype made by modern world media on connecting with a gynac for help.

The world, set design and character's feel so so lively. Real good to see and explore geographical locations of my country. It really brings me back to a non digital space time period with such beautiful human interactions which we the people had amongst us on a regular basis.

  • Before Mr. Zuckerberg took over !!!

I'd say this is definitely a must see with such brilliant concept, description, application and education.

Best work of Kumud Mishra Ji
achviv24 July 2022
While the screenplay deals with so many stories, but it also address the problem in a very humorous way. I wish this would have been written written and directed 20 years back to break the taboo. Its a must watch

May not be perfect, but may not have a better way either.

Even though it might be light web series but plays well enough.
mitravi-8496626 July 2022
We are living in an era where web series tend to be intense but Dr Arora might be underwhelming, other aspects are fair I believe. But the best part is the evolution of characters. Dr Arora showed his ability to reform himself and others including his ex-wife. Devender Thakur became more considerate than earlier as a stalker, Editor's father-son relationship became more mature. Eventually proving that life always gives a second chance.

It also digs down into fake news and serves as an eye-opener.

Kumud Mishra did amazing!

S2 would be interesting to see since his favorable terms with Devender Thakur and Baba would draw the MLA's favour towards him locking horns with the Police, Shekhar and his editor friend on the other side. How this will play will be interesting.

Only Kumud Mishra
sameerlodaya22 July 2022
Sameer lodaya

The series is only about kumud mishras performance rest there is nothing much to offer

One of the best performances by kumudji the way he acted very soft calm and spoke much through his expressions..a lot was expected from imtiaz after his last sizzling series SHE..love story of DR ARORA was soothing

The series goes in a extreme slow pace and there was a good place of humour but was not used..there was no need of 8 episodes..the story kept distracted by other characters stories rather than DR ARORA which no were connected

The climax was not solved probably kept for another season

Watch this for KUMUDJI.

The True life representation of what in general a doctor goes through
drupasanavettukad23 July 2022
There's a saying in marathi language " Garaj saro ani vaidya maro" Meaning as soon as the problem or need is complete who cares about the doctor.

People sometimes praises doctor too much or tarnish their life completely This series enraptured the aspects of a doctor also being a human being.

And Potrait it amazingly.

Unsung Masterpiece
sandeepkumar-147411 August 2022
Series deals with a problem which really exist in India. Definitely the blend of such topic with brilliant sultle romance of Kumud Sir and Vidya Ma'am is just mesmerizing. Indeed Kumud Sir have nailed the role with his acting skils and deserve lot of praise. Such problem exists in India society and we just take a laugh of it and move on. Really sincere efforts are made to make just a series.

A painfully boring show. An absolute waste of time.
Perspicuity13 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The trailer for this intrigued me because I don't recall a show like this ever made in India. Hollywood movies and the Netflix show 'Sex Education' have been very open about it, but India being a largely conservative country shies away from talking about such things in an open forum or through movies and web shows. Regardless of what the subject matter of a show is, it has to be made in a way that it engages its viewers, but unfortunately Dr. Arora is a painfully boring show which shies away from talking about things openly and doesn't reach any kind of conclusion by the end of eight episodes.

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD :

1. Dr. Arora's job is to solve sex related problems of people, and we see people approach him with various kind of issues, but the Doctor settles every single one of them rather quickly. None of the problems get talked about in detail, the psychological issues the patients may be facing never finds the spotlight and the solutions also remain on paper, the doctor never talks about them openly.

2. I don't quite understand as to why was it necessary to present this show in the form of erotica or perhaps porn. Sex is happening everywhere in the country, it's pretty much as normal as eating food, then why is it necessary to talk about it in the most stereotypical manner? There is a gorgeous married woman, her husband stays out of the city for most of the week, and she keeps flirting with a young bachelor in a way that has sexual undertones. In another scenario, a married woman with a new born baby gets attracted to a young man and soon they end up on a bed. Then there is a Baba, who gets visited by hundreds of married women for sexual satisfaction. These kind of stories are common in erotic magazines and novels, but I couldn't understand the logic behind using these kind of situations in order to discuss sex problems. It seems as if the writers couldn't come up with a powerful screenplay, so they decided to take the help of titillation in order to engage the viewers.

3. Seventeen years back, Doctor Arora's wife left him because he couldn't satisfy her sexually, which is a legally acceptable thing in India, but the doctor considers her to be unfaithful and continues to stalk her, so much so that one day he plans to have revenge sex with her. What kind of protagonist was the director trying to present here? The Doctor talks very nicely to all his patients, but is also cooking these kind of plans in his head? Are we supposed to empathize with him? I felt genuinely bad for the young Dr. Arora, played beautifully by Aditya Pandey, his suffering is understandable; but seventeen years later what the old Dr. Arora, played by Kumud Mishra, was doing was plain wrong, it was nothing but obsession and that can never lead to anything good.

4. It's not quite clear why Dr. Arora refused to treat Payal as soon as he came to know about her profession. A Doctor's job is to treat all kinds of patients, regardless of who they are and what they do. On one hand we are shown that Dr. Arora is a very understanding and caring person, who brings comfort to the nervous patients and then suddenly he develops hatred for a girl who is a prostitute. A character can have multiple traits, but two contradictory characteristics existing in the same person is not normal.

5. What kind of caricature was Firangi Baba? Why was he talking in an accent? If it was meant to be funny, then the writers failed miserably, because his accent was extremely irritating. I just couldn't find a reason to laugh at anything he said or did.

6. Why was the show meandering towards politics and journalism ? As a small sub plot, pretty much anything works, but these two threads were given a lot of space in the show, so much so that at one point it started feeling like a political show. The creators of the show seemed confused about the kind of show they wanted to make.

7. Every episode of this show is extremely slow paced and painfully boring to watch. The screenplay neither engages you nor entertains you in any way. It's never quite clear as to what the show is aiming to achieve, it wanders around from one subplot to another with no clear sense of direction. Imtiaz Ali is definitely suffering from a writer's block, no wonder he comes up these kind of awful stories. The biggest problem with this show is that it just doesn't intrigue you at all, instead the dull proceedings tire you out and put you to sleep.

8. Multiple subplots are opened in the show, but none of them get resolved. The writers and directors take a long time to come to the point in a particular thread but before they could reach a conclusion, the season came to an end. I feel that every season should leave the viewers with a sense of fulfillment; leaving everything for the next season is an extremely cheap tactic employed by filmmakers. This season of the show ends abruptly, making you wonder as to what was the whole point of this exercise ?

WHAT'S GOOD :

1. Kumud Mishra is one of the most underrated actors of our film industry who has been doing incredible work as a supporting actor for years now; so I was happy to see him finally get a lead role in a web show. A number of actors, who are often called character actors, have flourished thanks to the opportunities provided to them by the digital revolution; now it's Kumud Mishra's time to shine. This show could have been much better if it was just about Dr. Arora treating his patients, talking and explaining in detail about everything related to sex problems. Kumud Mishra has a very reassuring and comforting way of talking, something one expects from a good Doctor, especially someone who is handling diseases that people are scared to even talk about. The actor has tried his best to make sense of the screenplay handed out to him, he has an extremely likeable personality and you want to listen to him every time he talks. The actor Kumud Mishra has delivered, unfortunately the show let him down.

2. Another great performance comes from Aditya Pandey, the actor portraying the young Dr. Arora. The young actor has beautifully expressed his pain, suffering, anger and frustration without even saying a lot of words; that says a lot about his acting potential.

3. The music of the show is extremely beautiful. Composers Niladri Kumar, Sunny MR and Narottam Bain are associated with the show, and all the songs are worth listening, but Khaalipan by Niladri Kumar and Bewafa by Sunny MR are a cut above the rest.

A good series, focus on the gray area of society. Strange ending.
saswat-1233124 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Overall i like the series. Specially first few episode is very good. Songs are also good. I don't like two things in this series:- 1) Its strange ending - its feels incomplete ( may be we can see the story in season 2) 2) The story of dr arora and his ex wife ( feels a negative side of de arora when he teies to get intimate with his ex wife) Their love story feels lenthy to me.

An important sex capsule misfires at the last last stage of emission.
SAMTHEBESTEST24 July 2022
Dr. Arora : Gupt Rog Visheshagya (2022) : Series Review -

SonyLIV's latest web series Dr. Arora : Gupt Rog Visheshagya is like a sex comedy but more of sex diagnosis session. You see, sex diseases are still taboo in most of the states in India, especially the rural areas. Dr. Arora is inclined towards that zone, where having a sex issues makes your reputation go lower than a prostitute. The web series is funny, with adult jokes, of course as well as very keen about detailing of the main subject, Gupt Rog. However, it is dragged down by the typical outdated love story and melodrama which we have left way behind in Black & White era. The attempt is praiseworthy but misfires at the last stage when it was supposed to gun at its aim steadily.

Set in Central India, Dr. Arora Gupt Rog Visheshagya follows the life of a gupt rog specialist, Dr. Arora (Kumud Mishra). The series follows multiple narratives built by several characters across age, gender, and social standing coming to the protagonist. Basically, Dr Arora is an honest sexologist, who wants to cure his patients and nothing else. However, he has a past that sounds good in the beginning and almost till the end. But then fate strikes its sword, with the same old melodrama and childish love story, to spoil the entire narrative and structure of the protagonist's character. Arora is not an expert in sexology by choice, but by chance. The writing stumbles just before reaching its destination and as we say, "All well if the End is well," here it's the End that's Unwell!

Talking about screenplay, Dr. Arora has a long runtime but never bores you for the first 7 episodes. The last, 8th episode, however, goes against its nature and you feel like having played a game so efficiently only to lose the match in the last over. Let's just look at a few faults (Beware, it might cause a few spoilers). Dr. Arora's past trauma seems accurate when we look at his current profession and the reasons why he actually came to do this awkward job. In the end you realise that he wasn't here by choice, but by obsession which makes no sense at all. His lost wife is nothing less than a prostitute, yet he has love left for her. The wife, on the other hand, has no morals, no ethics when it comes to having a sex. She even accepts being a sex toy of many men, and yet our hero, Dr. Arora has a place left for her in his heart. Dr. Arora's plan of revenge sucks big time. Even those. I mean, come on, even those 70s Hollywood films had better revenge stories for R Rated films. Just like these two, every single patient of Dr. Arora has some blunders in his/her character. Take Gaurav Parajuli and Shruti Das' characters for instance. A young boy is mad about a married woman when he is an eligible bachelor himself, with one young girl hanging around him. The married woman (Shruti Das), is all about sexual desires with her words and expressions whenever she meets or talks with Devendar (Gaurav), and yet she has no intentions of having a relationship or affair with him. Wow, what a beautiful bond it was between so-called Bhabhi and Devar. Immature, that's what it is. The same applies to every character that comes for counselling to Dr. Arora, making the entire constructive image of the narrative look bad.

Coming to the positives, the web series is damn funny and on point with details of the characters and their issues. Dr. Arora uses all those taboo words without any hesitation, he does everything that any sexologist would do behind the close doors of his clinic, and the characters are also well settled with the sex issues. Dr. Arora Gupt Rog Visheshagya has a dozen of 'WOW' moments that you haven't witnessed in any taboo breaking films/series till date. It has some brilliant scenes referring to our real life, implanting exactly the same issues and situations any of us face in daily life. One more good point to look out for is, the series has all the female characters in their traditional attire, without any skin exposure, and yet all of them look attractive. Interestingly, all the men/boys are shown either little dull, weak or ugly, to make that sex issue look physically visible. You don't even need any verbal confirmation about the problem, you just look at the coulples - an attractive lady and mild looking man, and you know what their actual problems are. The humour is hilarious and is meant to make you laugh, no matter what your age. But beware, don't watch it with your family. It's an out-and-out adult fun riot for adults only.

Performances of all the actors are fine and that makes Dr. Arora very much of a watchable show. Kumud Mishra leads the way, not just as a character but as an actor to. The other pivotal roles by Raj Arjun, Gaurav Parajuli, Vidya Malvade, Vivek Mushran, Sandeepa Dhar, Shekhar Suman, Shakti Kumar, Ajitesh Gupta, Chitra Banerjee, Sam Mohan, Het Thakkar, Pitobhash, Vivek Kumar, Shreedhar Dubey, Apurva Singh, Anushka Luhar, Mithilesh Chaturvedi, Akash Pandey, Aditya Pandey, Siya Mahajan, Deepak Dutta and Satyakam Anand have done an honest and realistic job with their roles.

Sajid Ali and Archit Kumar have done fairly well as directors. It's not really their mistake of the writing has drowned the series after floating steadily for 7 long episode. Sajid and Archit go berserk about the unutterableness of the subject. The words and situations we can't describe or talk about openly, or even with our closed ones, are spoken without grabbles. Dr. Arora is their capsule to defeat sex diseases and more than that, the unspeakablity of it. The only problem is it misfires at the moments, just when you are about eject all the feelings and and awkwardness. Nevertheless, it deserves to be seen for the hard-hitting and realistic stationing of one of the most important yet unspoken natural diseases any person would face at any stage.

RATING - 5/10*
