Pygmalion Destroyed In A Modern Way.
SAMTHEBESTEST24 March 2023
Phulrani (2023) : Movie Review -

Vishwas Joshi sits in the director's chair for a Marathi cinematic adaptation of the evergreen "Pygmalion," starring Subodh Bhave and Priyadarshini Indalkar. Firstly, how many of us are familiar with the origin of this word, "Pygmalion"? So, Pygmalion was a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he had carved. In 1913, the legendary George Bernard Shaw wrote a play that put life into Greek mythology and gave us one of the greatest stories ever. After 3 cinematic adaptations in foreign cinema industries, Anthony Asquith and Leslie Howard adopted Shaw's legendary story in 1938 and gave us the best cinematic adaptation of the play. Frederick Loewe added colors of music in his stage adaptation, and then we got the Oscar-winning musical "My Fair Lady" (1964) with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. Purushottam Berde made an unofficial adaptation, "Hamaal De Dhamaal" (1989), with a gender swipe that nobody noticed, and then we all know about Bhakti Bharve's "Ti Phulrani." When one story transcends so many adaptations over the course of decades, you know there must be something great in it. For me, out of all the 10,000+ movies I have seen, Pygmalion is one of the best stories ever. There are so many metaphors in Pygmalion that I can't stop raving about them. Joshi's Phulrani has made me forget the legacy of all of them and how. This is, by far, the weakest adaptation of Pygmalion. Actually, it is not a cinematic adaptation but a daily soap adaptation.

Pygmalion starts on London streets with Higgins taking on the challenge of his fella processor as he takes a cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to his home to make a Duchess out of her. One must understand that the moment they meet for the first time and the age difference. Phulrani takes off with a lot of turbulence, and the first 10 minutes bore you with a useless ramp walk. Taking a street girl to make a duchess for an egoistic challenge with a friend is one thing; taking a flower girl to make a beauty queen to satisfy one's ego by making it viral news is another. During an argument with a journalist, Vikram Rajadhyaksh (Subodh Bhave) takes a flower girl, Shevanta (Priyadarshini Indalkar), to his academy to make her the next beauty queen. Shevanta, feeling awkward and being bullied by other urban girls in the academy, quits. Vikram, who is rooting for her revival, convinces her to return and takes her home instead of the academy so that other girls won't bother her. Soon, they fall in love-as expected-but the problem appears in the challenge that Vikram has to win. Will Shevanta be a dolly bet for him or will Vikram genuinely root for her? That is all that forms Phulrani's script.

Written by Guru Thakur and Vishwas Joshi, Phulrani is a horrible adaptation of the legendary classic. Pygmalion is all about metaphors and unspoken outbursts and love, but here they have made a typical, crap, melodramatic daily soap of it. Let's discuss them all. To start with, there is an age difference between the hero and heroine. Higgins and Eliza never look good together due to the age gap, and that's why they never speak about love. That's one of the major metaphors missing here. Two, it's about two equally stubborn sides. Higgins is an egoistic guy, and rightfully so because he has mastered the phonetics. Eliza is transformed from a street girl into a lady, and that's why she has to be stubborn enough to face the ultra-high ego of Higgins. She has to leave the house only to make him understand that he can't do without her, and that's how Higgins realizes her importance, as he has become habitual of her exercises. Not a single scene shows us that they love each other, but somewhere we know that it's there and it shall remain unspoken so. In Phulrani, Shevanta never becomes accustomed to Vikram, nor does she ever feel alone with him. The love story is so open, spoken, seen, and torturous that you never feel interested in it. In one of the versions of Pygmalion, Eliza leaves and marries Freddy, while old Higgins is happy for her. This is a simple, ordinary ending that no one would have cared for. However, the 1938 film scripted a happy ending, as Eliza returned when Higgins was feeling low, and suddenly, the next moment, both took a fresh start. "Where the devil are my slippers?" leaves you grinning, not knowing why, but you prefer going home with them. In the previous scene, you see Eliza yelling at the professor (yes, the man who made her big), and Higgins tells her that this is what he has made her: an independent girl. Phulrani neither has this much of a profound argument nor those simple learning scenes. A poor attempt to integrate "The Rain in Spain" from the 1964 musical with Borkar's poem is kiddish and useless. Those recorded phonetics and memories Higgins had are erased here. The friendly battle between the professor and his friend is wiped out. That selfish father of Eliza is converted into a wannabe noble drunkard. That ex-student of Higgins who might expose Eliza is not found here. Those eclipsing moments in Eliza's life, when she successfully wins a challenge for Higgins but suddenly realizes that from this moment there will be no classes, no arguments with the professor, and that she has now become overqualified to sell flowers on the street, are trimmed here. Phulrani is the remodified body of Pygmalion with the heart, brain, liver, and intestines removed from it. Why the hell did they adopt it then? If they wanted to make a soap opera, why didn't they write an original script? And why didn't they telecast it on Zee Marathi, Colours Marathi, or Star Pravah, which have rubbish serials running the whole day with repeat telecasts?

Speaking of the cast, I don't think any of the characters fit into what I had imagined of Pygmalion. Let's not compare anybody with the great work done by Leslie Howard, Wendy Hiller, Rex Harrison, and Audrey Hepburn. Subodh Bhave, one of my favorite actors in the Marathi industry, gets into a new zone. This is quite like a rom-com, not biographical or some intense stuff, and Bhave does a decent job. Priyadarshini's character is irritating and poorly written, but let's not blame her for that. She is decent too, despite some irregular accents and a childish attitude. Her transformation doesn't look much different because she is shown pretty well-dressed in the introduction scene, so there are hardly any modern changes. Had she been shown dirty in the first scene, like Wendy Hiller was in Pygmalion, then I think the impact of her transformation would have looked better. The entire supporting cast is misplaced, and none of them suit their roles. Vikram Gokhale, in one of his last roles, is still a delight to watch, but I don't know what his character added to the narrative. Ashwini Kulkarni, Sushant Shelar, Vaishnavi Andhale, Gaurav Ghatnekar, Milind Shinde, and others are those good-for-nothing characters that you see daily on your TV sets.

The music is a big letdown here, as the songs do nothing but add extra fuel to your boredom. The dialogues are poor, sometimes cheap, and too predictable. What you see in the camerawork will not please your eyes at all, even though there are some beautiful locations like the beach, farmhouse, pool, ramp, and the classrooms of the academy. The production design seems lavish. Vishwas Joshi is the main culprit here, as a writer too, but mainly as a director. Phulrani could have been a decent or average film even with many mistakes in the direction, but here it has gone even lower. Joshi is responsible for that. First as a writer for poor writing and then as a director for turning a cinematic adaptation into a slow-paced, outdated daily soap. Marathi cinema is lagging behind as far as content-driven cinema is concerned in the post pandemic era, and I was really hoping Phulrani would be a good flick, a nice and intelligent change in the rom-com genre since I have seen Pygmalion, My Fair Lady, and Hamaal De Dhamaal many times and know what content they had to offer, but all my expectations are swept away by this childish adaptation. Why did they have to choose Pygmalion and ruin it like this? I would've been less furious if it was an original script, but spoiling one of my favorite stories is not acceptable.

Don't waste your time
ythealthatitsbest11 May 2023
It's not worth watching at all. The screenplay looks so dull. There is nothing new in the story. The storyline revolves around the same old fashion plot. Don't waste your time. It's better if you skip this one. Phulrani play was much at a higher standard than this one. The lead character of Shevanta is so cliche. Subhod has wig is not looking good at all. I don't know how it has got good reviews and ratings, maybe it must have been given by the film cast and crew itself to make the rating look good. Some of the scenes are deliberately added. The director needs to work hard and think from a class audience perspective. This wasn't expected from him.

Entertaining and enjoyable
amahajan-273005 May 2023
My wife and I saw Phulrani one Sunday evening without any prior knowledge/ background , without too many expectations and were pleasantly surprised.

This is a well made , light hearted movie , with good production values with acting to boot . The movie is a visual treat with lovely costumes pleasing to the eye and some very good dialogues . We enjoyed the movie . I must add that my wife is not very familiar with Marathi and even so with the help of the subtitles , was engrossed throughout this entertaining film which has no violence or bloodshed .

Definitely worth a watch with family if you want to be entertained and still at the end leaves you with something to ponder.

What a performance..
ronu-9345623 April 2023
From the very first scene, Priyadarshini commanded attention with her natural and nuanced portrayal of Phulrani. She brought a depth and complexity to the role that was both captivating and inspiring.

It's rare to see a debut performance as confident and assured as Priyadarshini's. She has truly announced herself as a force to be reckoned with in the industry and we can't wait to see what she does next. This talented actress has truly impressed audiences with her incredible acting skills and undeniable screen presence.

Overall Phulrani is a must-see, not only for its engaging storyline but also for Priyadarshini's breathtaking performance. She is definitely one to watch!"

Entertaining 100 Marks

"Phulrani" is a cinematic masterpiece that deserves more than just 10 stars. This classic musical is an absolute delight, boasting incredible performances, stunning visuals, and unforgettable music. The chemistry between the two leads Subodh Bhave and Priyadarshini Indalkar is electric, and their duets are nothing short of mesmerizing.

The film is a true feast for the senses, featuring lavish costumes, intricate sets, and beautifully choreographed dance numbers. The songs are so catchy that you'll find yourself humming them for days after watching the movie. But "Phulrani" is more than just a musical. It's a witty and insightful commentary on class, society, and gender roles, and it's still as relevant today as it was when it was first released over 50 years ago. Thank god there is no Faltu Comedy! In short, "Phulrani" is a must-see for anyone who loves underdogs, romance, or just great filmmaking.

BEST MOVIE
anandmujumdar23 March 2023
"Phulrani" excellent movie! Worthy of *** five stars in my opinion. Dialogue writing, direction, story setting, actors acting, songs and all other aspects of the film are presented in an excellent manner.

Ba. Bh. To hear Borkar's poetry in a film is a treat. Similarly, seeing Amrita Ma'am, Shivani Ma'am and Manjiri Ma'am on the same screen is also a treat.

A movie that will appeal to cultured Marathi or Amrathi people. In Mumbai these days even Amarathi people understand Marathi language well. We are going to watch this movie again in the theater. By producing such great films, we get a chance to watch them and wish all your films a huge success.

Thorough entertainer

Great story, lovely characters, amazing acting, good music, nice dialogues.

Twists in the movie make it interesting, including the ending, it's unexpected and warm.

The actress has done a fabulous job, doesn't feel like her first movie, she has acted like a seasoned person - with the accent and the transition and portrayal of two distinct personalities.

The movie is engaging right from the start and keeps one wondering what next and how. The comedy is good too.

A lot of real situations, characters and dialogues make it even more interesting.

Definitely recommend watching, ideally a theatre watch.

Warning: Spoilers
Priyadarshini as Phulrani is amazing and mesmerizing. She owns her character and her screen presence is fabulous. She does complete justice to her role and excellent in every department...dialogue delivery, innocence, looks, dance, comic sense, emotional scenes and the professional ramp walk she did in final scene is just awesome. Her efforts can be seen in every frame.. Subodh Bhave is charismatic as usual and shows how he can play different roles at ease. Vikram Gokhle sir is legend. It's magical to see him dance for the First time and hats off to his dedication to learn something new at this age. Vaishnavi Andhale as Riya is impressive. All the other characters are good. Music is melodious, soulful and immediately lovable. Dialogues are superb. It's a full Package of super hit movie !!! A must watch !!!

jitendraavhad23 March 2023
Phulrani movie is very beautiful. There is a lot to learn from the medium of cinema, the writing, screenplay and sound are very beautifully written in the cinema. Also the songs are very beautiful. Every artist has done a beautiful job. The director has given opportunities to the new cast and has taken a lot of hard work from them and also from other actors.

I believe that the movie will get a great position. And I request the movie to be remade. You want to watch the movie from the beginning till the end.

I request that every Marathi person or even an Amrathi person should watch the movie..

Phularani.. A simple yet powerful movie of today's time.
milindantani30 April 2023
Powerful and simple wholesome movie. Though many versions /adaptation of Pygmallion are made, Phulrani standard out with a contemporary twist. Very subtle father Son relationship depicted. Very nicely written with class dialogues. " Take bag, leave the baggage " spoke a lot. Subodh Bhave and Vikram Gokhale are seasoned actors but the lead Phulrani played by Priyadarshini as like a breath of fresh air. What distinguishes this movie from other adaptations is the way story is told and unfolda. And that makes it today's film for every generation. Superb acting by everyone and masterpiece direction by Vishwas Joshi. A must watch. Go for it...

A movie that kept me hooked throughout by it's simplicity, and authenticity - Phulrani❤

The magic of the movie is in it's rawness which may appear an easy task but is infact the hardest part of any movie.

The trio - Late Vikram Gokhale Sir, Subodh Bhave and the new face Priyadarshini have done their art in a fabulous way thus making an easy entry to one's heart ❤

A very soothing movie, having a perfect blend of emotions well spread across with a music that takes you to a different world all together - All in all A rhythm unforgettable ❤

An absolute and a genuine effort to put forward a simple story while maintaining its simplicity is what truly touched the heart ❤

Excellent adaption & Improvisation
girishgangal16 April 2023
Phulrani by Vishwas Joshi Got opportunity to watch movie Phulrani last week. Comparison with the old Play 'Tee Phulrani' played by Late Bhakti Barve & Satish Dubhashi was inevitable. However, after watching the movie felt new package is much better.

We were completely awestruck with the treatment given by Director Vishwas Joshi and characters played by various actors. We were truly delighted watching it and performances especially by newcomer Priyadarshini Indalkar in lead role. She has done a phenomenon job apart from regular stalwarts like Late Vikram Gokhale & Subodh Bhave. Must compliment her and the director for wonderful experience to viewers. Film was good in adaption of original story by George Bernard Shaw, P L Deshpande and now Vishwas Joshi. Especially end of the movie and monologue of Phulrani was extremely convincing and touching and very well played by Priyadarshini.

The adapted story, dialogues, acting, editing, speed of movie, songs all were fabulous and I sincerely recommend all movie lovers to watch it atleast once. Wonderful package for all.

As displayed at the end, look forward for sequel next year..... Congratulations all !

Reviving 'Pygmalion', 'My Fair Lady' and 'Ti Phulrani' gracefully in the contemporary context.
tirthasamant-1798724 April 2023
George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion is an ironic satire on love and the English class system. Henry Higgins - a phonetician - accepts a bet to change Eliza Doolittle's language to make her a duchess (queen) in 6 months, trains her rigorously and then falls in love with her - his own creation. Based on this plot, the film My Fair Lady was released in 1964 and later P. L. D. Adapted this plot into the Marathi drama 'Ti Phulrani' in 1970-71. While Bhakti Barve's portrayal of Manjula and her monologue 'Tula Shikvin Changlach Dhada' still dominates the hearts of Marathi audiences, director Vishwas Joshi brought Phulrani into a contemporary context in the 21st century through the film 'Phulrani' released on 22/03/2023.

The Deconstruction of concepts like Beauty Pageant, the Beauty Standards and the slightly feminist lens is commendable and help make the film relatable today. Shevanta Tandel, played by Priyadarshini Indalkar, easily empathizes with the audience and Vishwas Joshi subtly breaks the concept of heroines being bound to a certain box. Shewanta's monologue in the film is very poignant. When she says, "Be it poor / rich, uneducated / educated and underprivileged / elite, a woman is ultimately an object, a doll" every word in the monologue is hard hitting and leaves one teary-eyed. Saying "not I'm not rustic but am uneducated because I have seen themoney for my education go quarter-to-quarter down my father's throat" the director expresses the pain of many such girls who are often deprived of education for this reason despite earning on their own.

Although the role of Brigadier played by Vikram Gokhale is in a secondary position, it is very effective in conveying the plot accurately to the audience. The role also conveys an emotional message by playing a big-hearted role to the child, saying, "Carry the bags, not the baggage." Subodh Bhave's portrayal of Henry Higgins/Nalayak Master i.e. Vikram Rajadhyaksha does full justice to both the hero and villain sides. The character development of this role from being associated with multiple women initially to being honest and loyal to Shevanta by the end has been beautifully shown in the film.

The roles of Sushant Shelar, Vaishnavi Andhale, Milind Shinde, Gaurav Ghatnekar, etc. Are seen in the film contributing equally to making Phulrani a success. The songs 'Hirve Hirve', 'Tujya Sobtiche', are perfectly timed in the film and gently touch the hearts of the audience and succeed in taking the plot forward.

The biggest strength of this film is that the story is presented in a very simple and easy manner without unnecessary melodrama or emotional twists and the film keeps the audience hooked till the end to know whether Shevanta Tandel's honesty is the best or Vikram Rajadhyaksha's arrogance.

Representation of the Koli community, prevalent social concepts, creativity, empathetic writing [eg: "It is the shop (of liquor) with the longest queue in front of it.], realistic framing of ideas and a graceful feminist touch are all aspects perfectly executed by Vishwas Joshi in Phulrani. It goes without saying that the challenge of reviving Pygmalion, My Fair Lady and Ti Phulrani in this age has been beautifully fulfilled through Phulrani.

Must watch
gokhaleneha17 April 2023
Watched a Marathi movie on the big screen after a very long time and it was an extremely enjoyable and cathartic experience for me. For me this movie is special because this was my father's last Marathi movie and to see him on the big screen in such a grand way was sheer delight. It gave me closure in a way, after his recent passing away, and I felt that he is still there with me as I watched the film. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this delightful film, from its stellar cast to the story to the direction and art and production quality. It was very nice to see a Marathi movie delve into the world of the fashion industry and showcase that life so well. Subodh Bhave is phenomenal and matching his caliber at every step is the debutant Priyadarshini Indalkar. You never feel that this is her first film, she has the confidence and chutzpah of a seasoned actress! A particular scene comes to mind where my father dances the waltz with her. I remember him telling me about this scene and how he looked forward to learning this dance. His enthusiasm at this age amazed me and his hard work clearly shows in the scene. I found the direction and the editing to be very tight and engrossing too. Every song was absolutely melodious and I'm still humming them in my mind!

All in all this film will always remain special to me because it is my father's last curtain call before he left us all and because it is an outstanding film!

Superb Priyadarshini as Phulrani
As it is, I was a great fan of Priyadarshini for her skits on MHJ . She has literally stolen the show single handedly in this Phulrani. It's like a six on the very first ball ... Subodh Bhave and Vikram Gokhale are gr8 as usual ... Hats off to Vishwas Joshi for providing such a wonderful entertainment. The message about the si called and well managed beauty pageants is very nice. What's more important is inner beauty rather than exterior appearance and hypocrisy. This movie based on Pigmalion is a great subject for all generations. The music numbers are catchy and melodious. Overall, a very good watch on Amazon prime.

The best part of the movie is that we can see it with family and friends. There are modifications made to suit the era. However not a bit of vulgarity. Direction Acting ,Music and is appreciable. Priyadarshini at her best in her debut role. Subodh Bhave , Milind Shinde have supported well. Songs are well picturized. Locations are very scenic. Amruta Rao and her colleague producers need to be congratulated for this endeavour . Director Joshi has shown his skills and talent at various points in the movie. Veteran actor late Vikram Gokhale leaves his individual impression.

Overall a good show. Every Maharashtrian family must see.

A beautifully crafted film - adapted for modern times
qjgcrhtdn23 April 2023
#Phulrani

A remake of Pygmalion is always an audacious proposition... One it has a legacy that the makers need to be careful about.. From Julie andrews in theatre to Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady to our erstwhile Late Bhakti Barve singing "tula shikwin changlach dhada" - the actress in the lead role anyway has a Herculean task as the comparisons are obvious

Priyadarshini as "Phulrani" totally lives up to her role and you actually live her dream and emotions throughout the film - her honesty and her vulnerability both endearing - at the end of the film your heart is happy that she has created a niche of her own Subodh Bhave - well someone who has a range to play Lokmanya Tilak to Balgandharva to Kashinath Ghanekar - this gentleman can do just about anything in life

Ably supported by the rest of the cast the film engages you till the very end

And with a lighthouse like Vikram Kaka in his last film he nails it with his dialogues - "bag gheun ja baggage nahi" - the expressions, the dialogue delivery, the reconciliation with his son - truly wanted to hug him wherever he is

Phulrani takes us through all the beautiful emotions - the laughter, the remorse, the metamorphosis of the character doing justice to the original - whilst adapting beautifully to the modern times especially the climax - kudos to the director Vishwas Joshi

And when your dearest friend is one of the producers of this film you come out as happy as Eliza Doolittle singing

"I could have danced all night And still have begged for more"
