Lucy Loves Trek

The genesis of Star trek might come as a shocker to critics of the newer Star trek variants such as Picard and Discovery. You know the ones with added wokeness.

Creator Gene Roddenberry wrote television shows that raised social issues and found out that the network would not broadcast it. Nichelle Nichols did an episode that highlighted racial issues and they too were not shown.

So it would have been startling that a science fiction program appeared in the mid 1960s that had black female and a Russian as part of the bridge crew.

The pilot for Star Trek included a female first officer and a weird Vulcan science officer.

Star Trek and Mission Impossible would never have developed as tv shows if it was not for Lucille Ball.

The flame haired comedienne started Desilu productions with her then husband Desi Arnaz. After I Love Lucy finished. She wanted Desilu to create their own properties.

Desilu half funded the pilot and the rest of the Star Trek shows.

Gene Roddenberry wanted the antithesis of Lost in Space. Wagon Train in spain was the tagline.

With writers such as DC Fontana and Harlan Ellison. Roddenberry wanted to tackle the world of 1960s.

Social issues such as race were examined leading to the first if chaste interracial kiss. There were metaphors of the Vietnam war.

This was a breezy and enjoyable exploration of the development of Star Trek. It was irreverent. It had bite sized clips of archive material.

A lot of it would be familiar to fans of Star Trek. I would certainly catch the rest of the series.
