This was a very interesting and thorough episode, however, it has veered off course from what American Monster is supposed to be about. Initially it was a documentary showing home movies and/or video footage showing the seemingly normal life of someone who will eventually commit a heinous crime. This episode is the opposite.
It begins with footage of Ashlee Harmon growing up in a big Mormon family and wanting to have a family of her own one day. Her wish for a family of her own comes true when she meets Emmet Corrigan. Most of the footage contains family bliss, but it all becomes strained when it is revealed that Emmet has been having an affair with a co-worker. So far there has been lots of footage of Ashlee, Emmett, and their kids. But who among them is the monster?
It isn't until the end of this episode that the "monster is revealed. The only footage of the so called "monster" was toward the end with surveillance video and a shot of him in the hospital.
American Victim is more appropriate for this episode because it depicted footage of the victim and his family life before his life was cut short by a jealous husband.
