Sonakshi Sinha & Huma Qureshi's Social Drama Doesn't Even Have An X Factor, Forget L (Lessons).
SAMTHEBESTEST5 November 2022
Double XL (2022) : Movie Review -

Double XL tells a lot from its name about its basic idea, and with two overweight ladies in the poster (Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi), you get to know more about it. The film has a good topic in body shaming but fails to capture the essence of the story. You have to be very careful while dealing with such ideas, which is clearly missing here. Women are always criticised for their fatness, be it in any field-cinema, fashion, corporate, or even sports. The fight against this was missing in Bollywood, and fortunately, it has come now, with known faces but unfortunately, with immature storytelling.

Double XL is the journey of two plus-size women, Rajshree Trivedi (Huma Qureshi) from Meerut and Saira Khanna (Sonakshi Sinha) from New Delhi, as they navigate society's beauty standards. Rajshree wants to become a sports presenter, but her mother doesn't approve. She has to face several rejections due to her extra large size, while Saira gets snubbed for the same reason in the fashion industry. These two double XL ladies catch up and fly off to London to achieve their dreams. There they are accompanied by two good men, Zorawar (Zaheer Iqbal) and Sreekanth (Mahat Raghavendra), who don't have any problem with their sizes. The quartet tries to find success during the process, and that's all you get to see in Double XL.

Sonakshi Sinha as Saira is a funky girl, and that's something new for Sonakshi. She hasn't played such a bindass character in recent time. However, the weight issues and some sort of dedication were missing. The same goes with Huma Qureshi, who gained 20 kg for the role. She looks fine though, but the performance isn't up to par compared to her recent ones. Zaheer Iqbal's Zorawar, aka Zo Za Zu, will irritate you at first, but he has some normal scenes by the end. The second male lead, Mahat Raghavendra, comes with a typical accent and goes with a typical act. I was expecting the supporting cast to add something, but they have failed, but surprisingly, the cameos are fantastic. Kapil Dev, Shikhar Dhawan and Jimmy Shergill give a pleasant surprise with their sweet cameos.

What's good about Double XL is the topic. The discussion and arguments over this topic are needed, and let me tell you, those have to be brutal and hard-hitting, but Double XL didn't even seem to have tried. The comedy factors have overtaken serious issues like body shaming, and the results are highly disappointing. Firstly, the issue agent highlighted it well enough. Rajshree and Saira both never worried about their weight or even looked serious about it. The problems they face aren't really caused by being overweight, but by their own approach to their personalities. Double XL lacks the X factor, which could have taken it to the next level, and therefore it lashes out at its own lessons that it was supposed to teach us. Mudassar Aziz and Sasha Singh were totally clueless about the topic, its exploration, its presentation, and its outcome.

Double XL has good music that does not feel boring. A couple of songs sound so nice in these situations. Milind Hog's framework is average, while Abhisek Anand's editing skills seemed a little less than what was needed. The director, Satram Ramani, picks a taboo subject to tell a mainstream entertainer, and believe me, it's a big mismatch. If you are attending a show on a taboo subject, be truthful about it; it is better if the mainstream audience gets the kind of entertainment they want. You do justice to your topic, and they'll be forced to like your vision. Ramani's direction is far away from this basic sense. Actually, it's highly immature. No emotional connect; no worthy drama; no sensible character; no USP; no hard hitting speeches; no understanding between the subjects and how they reflect. Not sure if he was really interested in making a film on such a brave topic or just wanted to make another flop.

Not a bad size
sameerlodaya5 November 2022
Sameer lodaya

The movie framing a bad size cult but it turned out to be in good size

The plot is definitely different with re known heroines playing the lead role in this difficult character.. huma designed her self perfectly to the character with that bulky looks and played really well in compare to Sonakshi..the girls broke the taboo of healthy looks..Zaheer was too much and mahat was cute

The movie went in to good pace and waves from the depressed character to the confident ones along with good songs and emotions with a light hearted feeling.

Love was not at all required where they could have shown good friendship

Humas fans will be very happy as she has steal the show once again after maharani.

Problems of obese ladies chasing their dreams
madanmarwah11 January 2023
Some movies have interesting and topical themes but the implementation leaves much to be desired. This is one more to the list. Obesity has always been a socially embarrassing subject specially for the fair sex and many young women also find it difficult to get married. An oversized person in addition to being fat shamed has been the source of comic situations . Luckily the movie does not focus on this aspect.

The movie ignores the fact that obesity brings about health problems too and may cause lifestyle diseases. Worse, the movie accepts obesity as unavoidable and celebrates it by advocating junk food. No one tells these two modern women to go on a diet and/or join a gym. This social problem doesn't have easy solutions and the movie also deals with the issue in a flimsy and superfluous manner. The narrative drags and meanders in many places. It gets further diluted due to unnecessary and boring subplots. A few scenes lack conviction. The plot is about two plus sized women. One is Huma Qureshi from Meerut who is keen on becoming a sports commentator ( Cricket naturally) and the other is Sonakshi Sinha from Delhi who is interested in setting up a fashion clothes brand in her name. Both women find their obese looks an impediment in following up their ambitions. Like Huma ruefully mentions that her interviewers don't check her knowledge and rather see her obesity as a disadvantage. In humour she mentions the all 3 have a good friendship that is she, food and obesity.

Director Satram Ramani falls short in making an impact and appears to be handicapped by a generally weak screenplay and dialogue. Even the acting does not make any impression mainly because of the ordinary dialogue. Both Huma and Sonakshi needed stronger characters. The ending is however well written and seems a reasonably logical approach to the issue. A good portion is attractively shot in London.

Horrible movie..watch at risk
navalmendiratta30 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The theme seemed good to start but soon loses out the plot. They are running around chasing the dreams which is absolutely fine. Nowhere in the world is known that if u r overweight u can't dream. And never did understood, the essence of hogging in the whole movie. Lot of people r overweight due to generic reasons but eating unhealthy all the time and being proud about it seems sending a wrong message. Not to forget the Zohar character, heights of irritation. The actress still did well in their roles though. But yes watch it at your own risk cause the plot is lost after 15 minutes of the movie.

A promising concept but failed to deliver
cromaine-1197030 December 2022
I watched this movie to see how they would deal with this touchy concept of weight, size and May be even body shaming.

Instead what I got was a movie that was heavy laden with dialogues. Dear writers this is a movie not a debate or documentary on this well thought of subject.

The story started off promising but after the first 20 minutes it loses the plot. And. Huma Qureshis story is almost forgotten. And the whole story is around fashion.

This is where I felt the movie lost it's relevance. Just because the title has an element of fashion doesn't mean that they make the whole movie about it inspite of having another angle that there was opportunity to run in parallel.

To end it dear writers it's not "one size fits all" it should have been "fit for all".

Clichéd and was a torture.
mguru-rao31 December 2022
Super illogical movie. The director thought that it's high time for audience to stop fat shaming and so he made a movie that can make people change their thought process. He did such a good job screwing it up. It was such a torture, felt like a character in the movie "saw" who is getting screwed up with blood oozing through ears because his / her mind can't take this non sense any further.

This story is so bad and such a typical talking out of your ass kind of story. Sonakshi and Huma self pity about their obesity and people making fun of them in this movie is actually insult to people who are really facing such issues. Their character seemed like people who don't like to work hard, finds short cuts, not do any reasearch and instead hope all the best things in the world.

Great concept and a fun movie
Misskayaubrey9 May 2023
A great attempt overall, audiences looking for fresh concept and light hearted fun will love this movie. Progressive audiences would love this storyline, the focus being on two heroines & their ambitions ,and finally a movie tackling body shaming in India.

The grating wails of Rajsri's mother trying to force her to get married because she's turned 30 and Rajsri's pain and frustration to embark on her career unshackled is something a lot of women would relate to.

But I'm glad this movie shows family (Rajsri's dad &grandma ; Saira's brother) support the two heroines' not so traditional career choices. Also shows women supporting women which is wonderful to see.

A refreshing movie to see which is also fun and quirky with two beautiful heroines portraying plus size women. Also the tamil actor makes a great (and cute) addition to the ensemble.

Astonishing bigotry on display!
sunny-r8429 December 2022
So far, celebrating obesity was a mental disorder limited to the United States as the capitalists there would make money on anything.

It is extremely sad that this nonsense in now being pushed in India as a narrative. Are there fat people in the society? Yes. Do they deserve to be treated with respect and fairness? Yes. Do we need to celebrate the fact that they are fat? NO!

We should rather endeavour to understand the reason why the person is fat, it could be poor lifestyle, medical complications, genetic issues or some other reason. These people need help to ensure that they stay in shape and thus can lead healthy lives.

Being fat can be a choice, but that is not in any way, equivalent to being healthy.

Such Bollywood nonsense should be ridiculed to the fullest extent possible and the idiots who portray such roles should be boycotted along with the producers, directors etc. These jokers are not doing anything to combat the obesity issues in the country and just want to make money. Disgusting.

Fun movie.
alisardar-692467 January 2023
It's an important subject to cover the issue of obesity which I think is a core issue of today's generation and it wasn't covered well... relating obesity with fashion to some extend is yes can be related but in other hand i wish they would have captured and enlighten the viewers of its health related issues around this taboo topic... but hey in other hand it's a fun movie full of humour and I personally enjoyed it watching and what I love the most about this movie is free of vulgarity that one can watch with kids and family. All the characters are good but Zorawar Rehman and Sri were the best amongst all.

Disgusting
manish-459814 January 2023
In addition to promote obesity and not working hard on a healthy body and healthy mind this movie promotes poisons like food from fast food joints and sugar. It is clear that this movie is financed by sugar industry who doesn't want people to live a healthy life. The movie has no substance. It looks like they write scripts and dialogues on set now a days. The acting is sub par and the entire movie was unwatchable. Sonakshi Sinha pretending to be fat by wearing XXL clothes portrayed that this actress did not want to gain weight for the the role. Why would she if she is a nepo-kid? Shame on Bollywood for making such a horrible movie.

Motivational
sameerkhan6669 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Motivational movie for all those people who have lost their passion race for the sake of society's limited and unscrupulous standards. This movie might not dive deep into the subject of fat shaming but whatever it did on surface should be a mark for a thunderous round of applause because primarily it is not a documentary and secondly, it is a fiction Bollywood movie that did not try to objectify women but has shown them from an eye of appreciation and what good they can do. Sonakshi Sinha looked so beautiful performing Saira, from urban Delhi who wants to be fashion designer, breaking the supermodel-cum-Barbie-doll stereotypes and launch a brand for plus sized girls. And Huma Qureshi plays a small town Meerut girl who dreams of becoming sports presenter but constant taunts of her typical mother has made her lose her hope. They are joined by two gem characters in London. Zorawar, creepy and cheeky Pathan guy who is a line producer and Shrikant, who is a cinematographer and is stereotypical Tamil who does not know much Hindi and about North Indian's likings and their famous personalities. Together four of them discover and unleash their love for themselves and wear the shiny dress of confidence in the city of London to achieve their dreams. Special appearance is of Dolly Singh, that content creator from South Delhi whose YouTube videos are famous. Movie with chick lit and female centric asset.

Movie with a clear narrative
AnoopVarma2 January 2023
My Today's watch Movie on Netflix Double XL It is a best worked movie. Feel good film.

Either due to some medical issue or due to bad lifestyle and anything eating habits fat peoples become fat, this is clearly shown in this movie that both the lead female character had bad eating habits and they are proud of that, without bothering what other feel about them.

Narrative is how women feel shamed for their fatness, dreams are not achievable if they are not slim and fair.. .. one should have self confidence, passion , and should not worry about society..just believe on your competence & abilities, do what you want to do ,you are beautiful and handsome the way you are.

Sonakshi performed brilliantly and Huma Quresi is simply fabulous rockstar, new guys Zaheer Iqbal & Mahat Raghvendra are flawless.

Script should have been more tight. Music part is OK. Cinematography nothing extraordinary. Directorial part is normal. Concept and storyline is superb with full of clear narrative.

Enjoyed the movie.

Couldn't handle even first few mins
dilipjatolia-29-62887829 December 2022
Boring story (not even a story) with no pace, no theme, no acting and no dialogue. No one can handle full movies. Not even worth of typing review here. Please just excuse this movie and watch some old movie again that might be a better use of time.

There concept about obesity is nice but if we talk about acting, script, and dialogues idk what were they thinking while making this movie. Bollywood has nothing new to present they are just repeating all the old concepts and same story lines. So much was expected from both the female actors because they individually has given good performances in past but together the film is not up to the mark. Believe it or not i have watched this movie rn on Netflix and finished watching it in within an hour thanks to the fast forward. The film could have been better.

What ever this was
rehmankhilji1 January 2023
A few minutes into the movie and you will realize that you are in for some next level boredom. This is what movie was completely about.

Above all, the topic was good, it could have taken good response from the audience, however, just that it was supremely badly made.

The lack of budget during the UK shoot was very obvious and the most sad part about this movie was that both the actresses were actually asked to put on weight for the character, hope they enjoyed the food because the part, the role, the screen play, the movie was simply not worth the effort.

The director, well, very immature attempt.

Zaheer Iqbal, get some acting basics boy.

Mahat Raghavendra was suppose to play a Tamil guy not good with Hindi, he was actually not even good with acting. Apart from few instances.

Sonakshi Sinha & Huma Qureshi, hope the trip to UK was good and all the food. Below average acting and performance.

A complete waste of time.

WASTE OF TIME
shahyou-575633 January 2023
I recommend just stare at your TV for 2 hours with switch off instead of watching this masterpiece. I was mad at myself for watching this movie.

This movie was a complete waste of time. The jokes fell flat and the plot made no sense. I regret spending money on this.

"The acting in this movie was wooden and the script was full of cliches. I couldn't believe how poorly made it was." I was really excited to see this movie, but it ended up being a huge disappointment. The characters were one-dimensional and the story was predictable. Avoid this one.

The pacing was slow and the dialogue was cringeworthy. I would not recommend it.

Note worthy concept ruined by bad film making
lakshmishaks8816 January 2023
Double XL is a cinematic disaster that should come with a warning label for those with a low tolerance for bad filmmaking. The movie's aim to tackle body-shaming is admirable, but the execution is so poor that it's nothing more than an hour and a half of cringeworthy dialogue and cliche plot points.

The performances from the lead actors, Huma Qureshi and Sonakshi Sinha, are mediocre at best and the accents they attempt are laughable. The supporting cast is also underused and wasted, with veteran actors like Shobha Khote and Kanwaljeet Singh given nothing to do.

Director Satram Ramani's storytelling is as outdated as a flip phone, with the film feeling like a poorly written newspaper feature on fat-shaming rather than a cinematic experience. The film's attempts at diversity in love and representation are tokenistic and shallow, rather than resulting in something truly engaging and entertaining.

In short, Double XL is a film that should be avoided at all costs, unless you're in the mood for a cinematic masterpiece of bad filmmaking. I give it a solid 2 out of 10 and that's being generous.

Good plot
charlesfredericks1 January 2023
Movie is watchable Huma Qureshi has acted well I was expecting Sonakshi Sinha to carry the movie. But the other actors faired well. Sonakshi Sinha should work more on her acting skills and she carries herself. Certain times she sounds good certain times she needs to work on her acting if she wants to make movies as her carreer. The plot of movie is promising but it doesn't take us on the journey as the name suggests. I don't know whether taking drugs could be humorous or funny as many are addicted to it. Small details have been ignored which makes you to skip certain parts. I hope Sonakshi Sinha should rework on her acting skills.

Huma got paid well probably but a career risk for her
tazeelazee7 January 2023
It took me a lot of courage to go half way to this movie.

Double XL is an absolute disaster. From its bad direction, to the terrible acting and lack of props, this movie is one to avoid. The boys had particularly awful performances, and it's a major disappointment considering the talent of the cast. It's clear that Netflix's standards are going down every day. Huma might have earned some money for her involvement, but she took a huge risk by acting alongside a weak actor such as Sonakshi. The plot was weak, the acting was even worse, and I couldn't even make it through the entire movie. Avoid this one at all costs.

Complete Garbage
ahxanhwvf19 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Over the top acting of Huma Querishi and Sonakshi Sinha. Very average film, had to only watch for 30 mins and then it became unbearable, movies does not have any coherence to the script. The ladies are made to wear oversized clothes so they look XL but the story does not have anything to grip the audience. The worst part is that Huma Querishi U. P. accent is so bad, she only says "Hum" and how her family will get her married. Even the toilet scene where they go into an emotional outburst is badly enacted. I would not like to recommend this movies as this completely unwatchable. Please do avoid at all cost and save time and do something productive.

Ignore the reviews.

How wonderfully refreshing to see real people act. How brave to have such top tier actors take on this movie and deliver better than any other actor in Bollywood. I am writing as a passionate Hindi film lover from Australia. The movie was so different from the norm, and executed perfectly. Love Loved it!

I would simply finish my review here but Google requires 600 words. So here I continue with only positivity which I wish the world and critics would embrace....

Thank you Sonakshi and Hurani for bringing such passion and determination to the screen, you were a delight to watch. Thank you boys for loving real women. We definitely exist, and absolutely love who we are ;)

worst casting
manishsingh-099768 February 2023
This film is a disaster from start to finish. The casting is abysmal, with actors who are devoid of any acting ability and seem to have landed their roles solely through nepotism. The performances are so bad that they actively detract from the story, making it impossible to become immersed or invested in what is happening on screen. The film is a waste of time and money, and I cannot recommend it to anyone. Avoid this one at all costs. This film is a disaster from start to finish. Entertaining movie
This movie has all. After so long I've seen such a nice piece of art in Bollywood. The movie has a nice cast. Sonakshi Sinha steals the show everytime she appears. Huma was also phenomenal on screen she showed his acting skills in this movie too. Sonakshi was very good whenever she gets screen time and dialogues. A new side of hers. Remaining supportive cast has also done nice work. The movie is fast pace in both the half's and you would not want to skip any scene just to make sure you are keeping up with new twist. Hats off the to director and showing that people also appreciate such sensible movies in Bollywood.

Powerful MSG In This Movie Must Watch
MehdiRizvi-78677 November 2022
MUST WATCH! Sweet film with a very important message.

Caught the first show of Double XL in Auckland on Friday and absolutely loved it. Had a great time watching it with the family.

Sonakshi is so underrated and I hope her work gets appreciated. As always she lights up the screen whenever she comes on.

Haven't seen much of Huma's work but she was so good!

Zaheer was charming and I'm looking forward to seeing more of his work in the future!

Mahat was a delight to watch. He's an absolute natural actor!

Loved the supporting characters in the film - Shobha Khote & Huma's mother (don't know her name).

They were so much fun. Loved the chemistry of all the 4 main characters. Have been seeing a lot of their promotional stuff that they have been doing before the release and I can surely say that their chemistry is the same onscreen and off screen!

It takes guts to make a film like this and I think everyone involved have done a fab job! Double XL deserves to be watched an appreciated!

Sonakshi Sinha absolute awesome Beauty with a note.. everybody should fit her look by not fitting into a perfect dress but a perfect dress is being made for her accordingly to their sizes..Grateful and all the best, much love.
