About fifty deaths have been recorded in falls into the Grand Canyon. The falls tend to occur while taking a photograph, losing balance or showing off. Warning signs and guard rails are in place to prevent these accidents but as people frequently ignore the precautions accidents are inevitable.

Built in 1957 and at the time the largest freighter on the Great Lakes, the Edmund Fitgerald was caught in a gale and sunk en route from Wisconsin to Detroit in 1975. The entire crew was lost making investigations of the cause inconclusive but the wreck did lead to more stringent safety procedures for Great Lakes shipping.

In 1980 an MGM Grand Hotel restaurant caught fire which quickly spread to the casino. It was extinguished before it spread further but not before releasing a tremendous amount of smoke into the hotel above. Eighty-five people dies and over 600 were injured due to the smoke. Ironically, actions taken by hotel guests to protect themselves put them at greater risk.
