A serial rapist posing as a cop, what better way to have the city on high alert? Rewatching the show, it's here that the producers really start cleaning house. Some of the background detectives have already been phased out, there's a sense of finality on the arcs of both Russell and Sal. Some of these characters have already made their exits.
Cooper's injury is getting worse, even as he continues to ride Chickie mercilessly for being a cut-rate cop. This is one of those occasions where it's hard to like John Cooper, demanding secrecy from his partner while judging her for not turning in her alcoholic partner years prior. The hypocrisy is overwhelming. I don't know why it bothers me that Chickie's skills are being so heavily impugned; I mean, she's a tough bird and has the potential to be a great street cop. and I guess that's the point, because we really do root for her when she's the one who takes down the rapist. It's a real moment of triumph and redemption.
In some respects, it's the end of an era for "Southland", but it sure did go out with a bang. this is where the series starts going from good to stellar.
8/10
