John (William Windom) discovers that his 10-year-old daughter Lydia (Lisa Gerritsen) is, "about to emerge from her somewhat transparent disguise of being a child and reveal herself as man's basic enemy- the eternal female." Lydia is wearing her self-described first mini-skirt and awaiting to be picked up to a dance by Elbert, the smartest boy in class. He calls to cancel, but another boy from class, Leonard, comes to the house instead, after threatening Elbert. John talks with a discouraged Elbert who is afraid of the bully Leonard. He tells him the story of when he was young and saw his grandfather stand up to a bully, making him learn to stick up for his rights. When Elbert counters the size difference and age, John tells two follow-up stories and builds him up to stand up to Leonard. To which boy will Lydia's heart fall for?
