This is part 2 in the Black Moon sisters arc and this time it's on Berther. Berther is obviously on the brainer side of things as we see she is a chess player; sidenote she's cute and hot she looks good in that red chessboard patterned dress as well as um with other things.

Ahem anyway, what's interesting in this episode is that once again is a character of sympathy, Berthier just like her sister Koan I never felt was evil, the problem is they along with the other two sisters have been misled, someone has been moving and playing them like pawns on a chess board. And we know if Berthier continues to let herself get played by the evil forces she will lose.

We see the chess match between both Ami and Berthier which is decent, it's a chess match not exactly excitement a minute. But we see Ami wins fair and square but unfortunate this doesn't sit well for Berther and of course knowing Ami's secret she immediately makes her move.

We then see Berther have a rematch with Ami, and it's kind of a "Macgyver" like situation as we see unfortunately it's a rigged game designed for Ami/Sailor Mercury to lose as Ami's side lacks certain other pieces giving her a complete disadvantage and of course ever piece she loses we see ice builds up to encase her. This game is clearly unfair, it shows Berther's Achilles heel and that is she is obsessed with winning, because to her victories are what achieve and attain love and companionship from others. But this is incorrect as love and victory are two different things altogether; part of real love is a person that appreciates, accepts, and simply loves you for who you are.

The other problem with her is that she has a bit of an inferiority complex; in the eyes of both Calveras and Petz along with Rubeus mostly as inferior she's nothing more than a pawn hence the fact she picked out pawns only for Ami to play in the rigged game. She clearly wants to be seen and admired as something more, but she already is, she just needs to see her own reflection in herself not in the eyes of others, for they can be deceptive.

There is a sad moment when we see two of the sisters Calaveras and Pertz come to Berthier and instead of admiring how close she is to victory or even helping her out. They instead just make a disgusting display of bad comedy, which showed no matter what Berthier did it was for nothing. And then Berthier delivers a rather sad monologue and I'll just say to her "No, Berthier I'm not laughing because there's nothing funny about any of it." Berthier is then in a dire state of despair and has become suicidal, as we see her make a desperate move of self-destruction by destroying herself and everyone around her all for a meaningless victory.

We then see Koan step up and try to reason with her. This was interesting where for once it's a regular civilian that is the one that saves the day and not just "Sailor Moon" or the Senchi I always like that as it shows how heroism isn't just for super powered beings, let alone you don't need powers to be a hero.

Koan, she gives a good monologue telling her she's not inferior. Which is true most people that say that to others or make others feel that way are losers themselves. But also, that she's not alone, that she has a lot to live for and that she can have a life on Earth, which is also true due to Berthier's intellect she can do a lot. Heck, with her skill at Chess she could be a Champion and make money from that. It's a thought anyway, one for her to consider among others.

Berthier of course makes the next move and it's her best move, for everyone always wins when they choose love.

Rating: 3 and a half stars.
