A wickedly funny black comedy hoot
Woodyanders13 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Edgar (an excellent performance by Daniel Sawtelle) and Derek (an equally fine portrayal by Robert Paterno) are a couple of businessmen who compete with each other to commit suicide after the company they work for experiences a major financial crisis. Director/co-writer Paul Gasco ably crafts a hilariously dark and twisted sense of dead-on biting pitch-black humor, with Derek's fumbling attempts at killing himself by stabbing himself with a pen, snorting massive amounts of cocaine (said coke turns out to be only sugar!), and decapitating himself in a paper cutter while Edgar watches and nonchalantly eats a banana providing the biggest and sickest belly laughs. The strong acting really carries this short: Sawtelle and Paterno both do sterling work in the leads while the lovely Katy Rowe impresses in a sizable supporting part as Edgar's easygoing wife Ginnie. Mike Simpson's stark cinematography gives this movie an effectively grayish film noirish look. The inspired use of classical music likewise hits the spot. The surprise twist ending is a real doozy. Well worth a watch.
