Tough episode to give a review for

It really does seem like Lecy has the stronger material to work with when they give her a shot. I prefer the serious acting Becky to the Becky where her scenes are delivered in an over the top manner. So you do get a mixture of both acting styles with this episode. And the viewers also find out how Mark (Becky's husband) died. I had been wondering exactly how they would handle Mark's death. I'm surprised the writers pin pointed a reason for how Mark died instead of not saying anything and letting the viewer fill in their own blank with what they think happened to Mark. My blank consisted of car accident. I didn't want to blend the actor with the character and have Mark developing a drug problem and overdosing. For those wondering: Turns out a deer ran out if front of Mark's motorcycle.

I'll admit I'm very happy this episode featured on Becky and Mark (Darlene's son) and left the Darlene/Ben storyline out. No offense to fans of Ben and Darlene but I'm so tired of hearing about them moving in together. I'm sure it'll be back for the last two episodes though. I hope they wrap that up and leave that boring storyline alone if the series gets picked up for another season.

Here's where the problems come in at. I love the original "Roseanne" and my feelings about Becky and Mark are different than Darlene and David. I never felt like Becky/Mark's storylines dragged the show down and thinking "Thank goodness there's stronger storylines going on to make up for this weak storyline going on with those two." And I'll give all three credit...I loved the chemistry between Lecy and Glenn, Glenn and Sarah Chalke. But I guess the series is choosing to cherry pick and just rewrite history for certain parts?

I think back to the original "Roseanne" with what happened with Becky's education. The Conners were going through a tough spell financially and Becky's college fund was "spent". I still have to bite my tongue to keep from laughing at that line. I go back to other reviews where I say that I doubt there was a college fund. The Conners struggled a lot. You might like to have a college fund for your kid(s) but your circumstances might go in the opposite direction of what you'd like. I realize community college was brought up to Becky after she found out her college fund was spent. So yeah, Becky might've had other options besides running off and getting married. And I can see where an older adult might look back at their younger self and have the regret of "I wish I could've had both. Keep my relationship with Mark and still go to college." Mark didn't force Becky to do anything. Mark was even upset at Becky when she quit school in order to go to work. That was during the Becky #2 timeframe. And I don't recall Mark being greedy about him going to school. The man knew what he couldn't handle. He didn't want to take that money but Becky was nagging him about going. And to nobody's surprise, Mark couldn't cut it with the school he was going to.

I do vaguely remember the Becky wants to be a doctor storyline. It's been awhile since I've seen that episode but I kinda remember Mark was reluctant about Becky's education during that storyline. Seems like that was the only time I remember him being reluctant about Becky continuing her education. He was worried that it'd put a lot of distance between them. And Becky # 1 was even discussing that in another episode. She was hanging out with Darlene at The Lunchbox and she was ogling some hot guy that had walked by. There was the discussion between the two girls that Mark's hot but doesn't really have a lot up top. What's their marriage gonna be like when Mark gets older and possibly loses his looks? Can a fairly intelligent girl still click with somebody that's not that intelligent?

So back to "The Conners", there's parts of me that's not a fan of this episode because it seemed like it was throwing off on Mark too much. If I had chosen to get married I would've wanted a Mark-type of guy. He was a nice guy and I feel like he did look out for Becky and I don't think he was the type to hurt her. I had to give the episode a 6 because the material in this episode was still strong, even if I disagreed with parts of it.

The second storyline involves Mark stressing about an important test and the dumb think Darlene does to "help" him and instead she ends up messing up an opportunity for him. At least Darlene does the right thing and goes down to explain to the school what happened and Mark's time stamp showed that he had already answered the question that Darlene was holding up answers for. And I'll give credit where it's due, Sara did a great job when she was confronting the instructor about the posters hanging up. Some people do have a better opportunity than others because of their money. It isn't always a case of "Work hard and you can get to the top!" Money helps.

The Dan and Becky stuff was good. This series excels at those deep, hard-hitting moments.

The Darlene and Mark stuff was boring though. Mark is just a bad character.
