Every coin has 2 sides....
tomerkh30 July 2022
I think, I find it much more easier to write this review from 2 different points of view: As a standalone movie, and as part of the Sword Art Online franchise.

Well, as a standalone movie it was a pretty good one. Comparing to other contemporary movies, any movie that keeps me invested in the story and don't want to fast forward is a good movie for me. It is nice to see the same familiar story from a different perspective and how the same events are intercepted differently by each participant. Although the movie is pretty short, we could still experience a character development (although I'm not sure we want too) and story development.

As part of the SAO project... After reading the synopsis, I didn't have much expectations. How many of you would want to see a movie that they have already see? With the same characters? But they did it! Somehow the SAO team crafted an interesting experience, based on a well known story. Having said that there were too many things that didn't heads up if you try to connect the events from the movies to the events from the series (And I'm not talking just of the actions that took place in the movie, but the character's reactions that just don't heads up, sometime it felt there were 2 different set of characters).

I must say, without any doubt, the producers of this movie decided to take the road less traveled. I think I can count on one hand the number of movies that try to achieve this: creating a "prologue" that interacts with an existing plotlines in so many places. I really appreciate the fact they try to use this technique to deliver a unique and interesting experience to the screen, However I think this movie could have been better entwined with the original story.

Moreover, I'm not sure why they have picked this period of time and that question for a movie. There are far more interesting (and easy) question to base a movie on. For example What happen in those 2 years gap in the series? How the Knights of the Blood Oath came to be? How Asuna joined there? Where and why Kayaba did? And some more question that I find much more answer worthy than the question they try to answer in this movie.

To sum things up. I think this is a real good movie and can be watched even if you have no knowledge of SAO at all. If you saw the first season, you won't be disappointed just a little bit confused (I know I am) and hoping that the next movie would shed more light on far more interesting questions.

This could have been better

Warning: Spoilers
While this is mostly good, the biggest gripe I have is what I call the Star Wars prequel treatment. My problem is I'm not a fan of when in the main series/saga two characters meet, and then down the road the creators make a prequel where those same characters keep running into each other. Did we really need Kirito and Asuna to meet and converse twice before the initial meeting in the original series? What did this add? A different character could have filled the Kirito role and it would have made more sense. It didn't even have to be a new character, it could have been an already established character. What it comes down to is the creators were probably too worried that fans would be mad that Asuna and Kirito don't share time until two thirds through the movie. Give the fans more credit.

Wanted to Live It

Maybe it's different with the sub but there were glaring errors with the audio- and even some worse ones with the animation that I just couldn't get past. Scenes were completely altered in some cases. For scenes that were already done in the original series I don't see a reason why they couldn't match up. I'll watch the next part when it comes out just because my husband wants to - but I'm not expecting anything short of more irritation. Other than that issue I'm giving 7/10 stars just because I'm a fan of SAO and the art was still lovely. If they changed anything else I don't think I would be rating it as highly.

I believe fans of the show will appreciate the fleshed out aspect of floor 1 in this movie. Had some really good laughs and some really awesome animation. Can't wait for the next one.

Warning: Spoilers
To me the progressive movie of sword art online was so good and it was really good to learn more about Asuna's back story then what we did in the TV series.

The movie also stuck true to the first progressive book aswell with every thing playing out although mito was a new addition but I think she fit in really well with Asuna's story and it showed us how the lightning flash actually got to be as good bad she was after all we all have a good teacher that helped us strive to be better and taught us skills that allowed us to get to where we were.

Also getting to see Kirito and Asuna meet was good seeing how they reacted to one another before the teamed up for the first floor boss although brief left us desiring more and seeing them work together during the boss raid in a different way to the original show left us or me at the very least on the edge of our seat especially when mito jumped in to save both Asuna and Kirito's lives while kirito recovered from the attack.

Beat expectations
jamesz-1792116 December 2021
TLDR: yes watch it.

I made an account just to review this. I've seen all of SAO and I really think the actual aincrad (I think it's called?) stuff is the best. SPOILER - when the threat of death isn't present in the series I lose all investment. The original idea of being STUCK in a game and having to life or death the game makes the series so much more intense, immersive, and impactful. Stakes are high, tension is high.

So I was literally about to change my mind last minute and not go see this movie. I mean cmon. SAO right? Insert SAO meme here. I'm very happy I didn't listen to myself.

I went to see the movie in theaters and was immediately disappointed it was a DUB. HOWEVER!!! Whoever the voice actors were on this absolutely bodied it. Especially asunas voice. Emotions were conveyed perfectly. Hopelessness, anger, sorrow, relief, excitement. Many times DUBs lose the emotion in voice lines through translation. This was not one of those times

It was very immersive. The movie transitions flawlessly scene to scene and never made me feel like I was just waiting to get to the next part. Tons of very nicely animated action. Zero wasted time in this movie.

The music wasn't to memorable. Great for making you feel like it's a video game. They dive really deep trying to "get you in" that video game. You can see it with how they explore it in the script as well as the camera angles they use.

Originally I went to see this because I'm restless waiting for that new Jujutsu Kaiden movie to come out. But honestly this movie held its own and will be one I remember and recommend.

I been watching anime for like 20 years. This is a perfect medium to explore SAOs first floor again. Very fleshed out and to be honest, if they adapted the rest of the aincrad (again?) stuff like this...I would definitely go watch it.

Awful Addition to SAO Universe.
HotHamlet24 September 2022
This movie wasn't terrible but was not very good to say the least. First off before anything i want to mention how half of this movie is just Sword Art Online with nothing added besides some poor context.

Now, the story of this is simply put a worse version of the Sword Art Online story that most know. It doesn't add anything substantial and when an event happens that makes you ever so slightly interested it makes a mess of what could have been ok. This movie from day dot was never going to be amazing, but i was hoping for at least something average. Although i don't hate SAO as much as others, i am now off put from SAO going forward simply because of this anime movie. Story isn't original (obviously) and has nothing extra of any substance.

The new character added into this movie and subsequently the universe of SAO is real bad. Now it's not the worst character to be introduced in anime ever, but my god this character has to be in my top 100 most pointless character ever. I have no idea why this movie was made and the driving force behind that thought is this new character. She was so uninteresting and didn't add anything to SAO at all. I think you are meant to dislike her at a certain point but i simply didn't care as this character is awful.

The animation is easily passable but nothing amazing in anime terms. If you have seen any of the Sword Art Online anime in the past (which you probably should have before watching this movie), the animation is about the same it's always been. Not at all bad but simply fine and easily passable in this type of show. The visuals of the world seemed nice and the design of certain areas are fine but nothing extraordinary. All of this is about average if not slightly above, but nothing good.

Story - 1/10

Characters - 1/10

Animation - 5/10

Visuals - 5/10

Definitely do not recommend, 2/10.

Much better than I expected.
acgentry13 July 2022
It's much more detailed than sao season one. The pacing of the whole movie is very good. The emotional description of Asuna is very full which make up for the lack of season one. Althought it repeats the story of floor one again, it doesn't make me feel like repeatitive. I've been waiting for the sequel of sao of years and this one really really superised me. Overrall it's amazing, can't wait for the next one.

Have been waiting excitingly for this to finally release in my country, and i can't wait for that day (17th of february) to come. Sword Art Online has been my favorite for a long long time and movies like these only make it better.

A Solid 8
orhanuzun11 July 2022
I think this movie is a solid 8 and what I expected when I first started watching the series. 1st half of the 1st season was really rushed and made you think that the plot was kinda wasted due to the rush. But for me the pace of the movie is just fine. Can't wait for the next movie.

worth to watch
sincin-537185 March 2022
A high-quality movie with a really good story, art design, soundtracks and theme song. The story will be narrated from the main character which is 'Asuna' so, in this movie, we will know more about her background and deeper details apart from the story from 'Kirito' in Sword Art Online (Season 1). The art design is awesome, and the sounds are really good, it fits the movie perfectly, both soundtracks and theme song. Also, there are a lot of feelings in the movie, and it can exhaust all the emotions perfectly and I am really into it.

A better Sword Art Online
filipmacku23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this. Since I watched original SAO and don't liked it, I thought it will be bad too. I watched it only because my friends told me so. They said it is amazing. So I promised I'll watch it too and I was very surprised.

Everything is better in this version. Characters are more deep you understand what are they doing and why, except the "knight" again, just why. Story is better you get to know why asuna is doing what she is . I even like the joke with Kirito, when he was trying to put his sword into his case and wasn't able to find the right hole. It is just 100% better. Of course it has some lack, everything has.i cannot wait for next part.

OmG, the feelings
chirilescemanuel10 March 2023
I'm one of the dudes that took a break at the end of Gun Gale Online. Nothing to be heard out of SAO, after that time. For me, at least. I'm the kind of guy that forgets, so I heard Progressive coming to teathers in 2023 and I was like, "ok, I want to see this" and went to Aria of Starless Night. As a fact, I just left the movie hall 20 minutes ago. One thing that I will most probably not forget is the sensation. Sensation that one gets when you watch the first of the many episodes from a series, sensation when you get when you finish the series or the sensation as of the memory of what you had been watching. In 2014 when I think I first watched the series, I felt it. Felt it all the way, as a reminder of how good it was. Felt it at Gun Gale Online then pause.. long pause. Forgot about the thing. Present moment, and I felt it again watching Aria of a Starless Night. 10/10. If you know, you know!

I'm so glad I did!
