Appearing years before The Artist, Lara Jo Regan's Big Top Winkle presages many of the key elements of Michel Hazanavicius' Academy Award winning masterpiece. The film boldly did away with sound almost a decade before Hazanavicius made silent cinema fashionable again and also offers poetic, black-and-white imagery. And, of course, it creates a cinematic stage for Mr. Winkle, the uniquely adorable and soulful little canine who's just as magical in motion as he is in his celebrated series of still photos. From the moment he jogs onto the screen to his beautiful dance in the touching finale, every little thing he does is magic in this wonderful movie.
