One of the Pink Panther's weakest, and strangest
The Pink Panther to me is one of animation's most iconic characters. DePatie-Freleng Enterprises' output was very hit and miss, or at least post-1970 it was, especially the later theatrical series. With hits such as Pink Panther and the Ant and the Aardvark, and duds such as Crazylegs Crane. For me, The Pink Panther on the whole was the studio's best theatrical series, though The Inspector and Ant and the Aardvark ones come close. It did become very variable from the mid-70s onwards, but the 60s-early 70s output contained some of the studio's best work.
Although a vast majority of the 60s Pink Panther cartoons were very good and more, a few did disappoint. 'Reel Pink' was one of them. It at least feels like a Pink Panther cartoon, something that another lesser cartoon in the series 'Shocking Pink' did not. It is still one of the weaker Pink Panther cartoons and certainly one of the strangest because of how much of a disjoint there is between its two halves, or at least of when the series was in its prime.
'Reel Pink' does have good things. The animation is colourful and elegant enough though simple. The music score's jazzy feel is very memorable and fits beautifully. It is clear also why the catchy theme tune is so iconic in animation even today too. And Pinky is still one cool and endearing character, also clever, though he has worked better in better-written scenarios.
The worm is cute and is a good foil, the sequence where he is at work is the highlight of 'Reel Pink', sadly he just goes with no explanation.
Less interesting or funny is the crab, introduced out of nowhere and annoying and honestly did question its point. It doesn't help that the material isn't very funny, it is not really smart, thick-and-fast or laugh-a-minute, any amusing moment is occasional but much of it is silly and repetitive.
Pacing feels both rushed, think that the cartoon was a little on the short side too, and because of the humour falling flat dull. And the story was strange to say the least, the two halves were completely different and un-related to one another to the extent that it was difficult to tell what the focus of it was supposed to be.
All in all, not disastrous and has good things but strange and really not one of the Pink Panther's best. 5/10.
