Oh, Those Effin' First Days...
cchase26 January 2009
Where so many shows would take an episode like this and force you to suspend your disbelief as high as Mount Fuji, thank goodness that CSI takes a more realistic approach instead. Here, as always for the CSI Team, the devil is in the details...but that devil's been sent to plague newly-minted CSI Level One, Dr. Ray Langston (Laurence Fishburne).

Having the esteemed forensics professor and profiler step into the shoes of the departed and revered Gil Grissom without a hitch, would've been about as feasible as Carrot Top doing brain surgery. Fortunately, the writers opted to use Fishburne's considerable talents, to show us what a case of the first-day jitters would be like for a man like Langston, warts and all.

He's no idiot, of course, and realizes that as much as he wants to do well and impress his new colleagues, even with their sense of professionalism, it will take some time to bond with them and earn their trust and respect. Predictably, the toughest nuts for him to crack will be boorish trace analyst David Hodges (Wallace Langham) and fairly new team member Riley Adams (Lauren Lee Smith).

In a day stuffed with the usual cases that run the gamut from burglary, to an arson that turns into a homicide, to a domestic case where getting close to victims is something done at your own risk, Langston realizes that he has a lot more to learn than he thought, and that none of it was stuff that could be picked up in a lecture hall.

And we learn, with a blessed sigh of relief, why Fishburne was cast in this role. His character may not seem like a fitting replacement for Grissom fans at first blush, but when you're talking about being a fill-in for somebody else on a team, especially on the first day...who does?

New Guy on the Block

Laurence Fishburne has been hired because of his medical knowledge and acuity. This is his first day on the job and he has ups and downs (mostly downs). His inexperience shows through everywhere he sets foot. But he is smart and flexible. One thing that gets him in a bit of trouble. The case is arson and he slips into some domestic abuse and narcotics crimes Fishburne comes to grips with what some might see as a weakness: compassion. He is already an interesting character. I would guess more of his natural skills will come out as the show progresses.

Langston's First Night
claudio_carvalho24 April 2023
Langston's First Night Langston arrives at the laboratory wearing suit and tie and a heavy suit with crime scene on his first working night. Catherine assigns Nick and him to a burglary case, where Langston feels the first difficulties to collect fingerprints from the doorknob. Nick helps him to recover the prints. When they hear an explosion, they are assigned to head to the site to investigate the case, where they find Brass. They learn that the place belongs to Don and Paulla Kingsley, and they find a charred body inside the wrecked house, and construction equipment outside. Soon Paulla arrives with her assistant at the place and Brass learn that Don was depressed and addicted in barbiturate, having an OD a few weeks before. Now they need to resolve both cases.

"The Grave Shift" is a good episode of "CSI", with the first night of Langston working as a CSI Level 1. As most rookies, he has difficulties to get basic information like fingerprints from a scene, but as an experienced man, he tries alone afterhours until he learns. The two cases are very well resolved in the end, and Langston contributes with his experience and learns unavoidable lessons. My vote is eight.

MutantX in a CSI Episode
kinshasa696922 January 2009
I love the fact that we have Victoria Pratt and Lauren Lee Smith back together again. The fact that Lauren played an "Empath" in MutantX and is playing a character that seems to lack empathy is interesting.

Victoria Pratt, well, she's Victoria Pratt. She ROCKS!!! Although Victoria is playing someone that works out and takes care of herself is not new. I wish they had given her a chance to play a character with more substance.

It's unfortunate that ratings for MutantX weren't higher. These two ladies had a chemistry that rocks the charts.

I'm just glad to see them working together, again. Then, add Laurence Fishbourne... I'm in pure heaven!
