BIG TOWN – Gang Leader – 1955

BIG TOWN was a series that ran for 249 episodes from 1950 to 1956. It is about the managing editor of a "Big Town" newspaper. The city is never named. For the first four years the editor was played by Patrick McVey. For the last two seasons the lead was played by Mark Stevens. This episode is from 1955 with Mark Stevens. It is episode 219 of the production run.

A rackets boss, Joe De Santis, is in court waiting for the jury to return. He is giving instructions to his gang on how to carry on if he gets time. The jury returns and De Santis, gets five years in the big house.

It is now five years later and De Santis is out of jail. He discovers that his head bookkeeper, Harry Bartell has taken control of his rackets. And mob business has never been as good. The problem for De Santis is that nobody wants him back in control. Bartell has several "new employees" give De Santis a curb stomping and toss him out when he tries to reclaim his racket. "Leave town or die!" He is told.

Needless to say old time mobster De Santis has no intention of going quietly into the night. He intends to get even. De Santis contacts newsman, Mark Stevens. He will spill the beans on Bartell and his crowd. The new mob management hears of this and dispatches a hit-man to ensure silence on the subject.

De Santis is filled with a tad too much lead for his digestion to handle. He does however tell Stevens and several handy Police detectives all they need to know. Armed with this dying man's confession, the boys in Blue soon put the kibosh on all the mob types.

This series went by several different names in syndication including, HEART OF THE CITY, HEADLINE, BYLINE, STEVE Wilson and CITY ASSIGNMENT. The series was based on the long running radio series of the same name. The radio program ran from 1937 to 1952. There were also several low budget films made in the 40's like, BIG TOWN, BIG TOWN AFTER DARK and BIG TOWN SCANDAL based on the same source.
