After enjoying Margaret Cho's spooky turn in Koreatown Ghost Story (2021-also reviewed) I decided to continue watching the shorts at the Grimm Film Festival,by looking at a portrait.
View on the film:
Framing refine wide-shots on the wall of the family home to the unflinching sight of Valeria being abused by her dad and grandfather, producer/editor/writer/director Felipe Martinez Carbonell stylishly uses muted colours to reflect the inner turmoil Valeria is experiencing.
Painting the spirit of Valeria's dead mum onto the family, the screenplay by Carbonell takes a great, measured approach to bringing the supernatural in, with Valeria (played with a great slow-burn grit by Cecilia Li Causi) being crushed by the abrasive horror unleashed by her family, who unleash a spirit of revenge across the family portrait.
