"Bergen, a woman of pain"
akinozkardes10 March 2022
Bergen, a Turkish arabesque singer who represented arabesque culture in 80s in Turkey is a figure for all those who are exposed to male violence in Turkey. The film portrays this figure's life from childhood to her death by good acting and not engulfing in pure arabesque. Farah Zeynep Abdullah and Erdal Besikcioglu deserve acclaim for their acting. The thing is that some passages of stages are made all of a sudden. Apart from that I like the cinematography, acting, not the mention the fact that the scenario is based on Bergen's own life. What is more, at the end of the film, it calls the attention to domestic violence against women which should also be applaudable.

In conclusion, Bergen draws huge amount of audience to the cinema which suffered a lot from the pandemic. I have never witnessed such an enthusiastic audience in motion pictures for a long time.

A mediocre movie.

Warning: Spoilers
Of course, the biggest reason Bergen is in such a toxic relationship is his father.

Fathers; Why doesn't he love his daughters? Why don't they stand behind them like a mountain? Why are these girls looking for love in the wrong places? If a girl wants to take shelter in a man, know that her father is not behind her. He is trying to fill the void inside him with someone else.

Let's come to you pure p. He was a slut. I'm out of my salon woman line right now. What a dishonest, dishonest man you are. A lot of g.watts can't come together to produce concentrated pust like you. You are married and you are planning a fake wedding, hiding from the woman that you are married. If you were a real man, you wouldn't hide behind a lie. There is a pattern of beating, there is a pattern of closing the house. You are the leader of the carrion.

I also have a word for Kozan Municipality. Who is this pure freebie? Are you afraid of God too? Is the mafia bigger than the state? They do not broadcast the film of the murdered woman, they protect the man whose abuse news was flying in the air. Oh what a homeland. You know, the people of Adana were God's men? We saw. I understand.

I think the cinematographer of the movie and Farah's acting were very good.

And when my fate started to play from Orhan Gencebay in Bergen's dream, I became a villain. It was as if a moment had come from an unexpected place. Get out of my mind.

this story needed to be told...

This story needed to be told, thanks for telling it. The movie theater is full even in a pandemic.

To my taste, it is a bit 'too trying' to be dramatic however definitely deserves a spot on the 'to watch' category.

The life of Bergen is heartbreaking. The fact that the movie draws attention to her life and the injustice in violence against women is exceptionally valuable. It points out the absurd reality of a dangerous, unstable man, a murderer, not being locked up in prison today. I respect this movie for that.

However, there are some things that bother me with the movie. First of all, I don't think jumping from one scene to another was the way to go when making a biopic. We don't see the reasons behind Bergen's decisions. Regardless those decisions were wise or not, the filmmakers should have revealed her reasons and closed the gaps to let the audience empathize with her and not misunderstand her so that maybe we wouldn't have heard idiotic comments like "she had it coming". What made her change her mind? Was she afraid? Was she punishing herself for something? Everybody has reasons and unfortunately hers were not really included in her own biographical film. I guess some fictional and dramatic additions to her real story were more important than the reasoning. Second, I really wish they had gone for another actor for the main role. Farah Zeynep could not reflect Bergen's character and mannerisms well enough in my opinion. She is rather just herself dressed in 80's clothes but still acting and speaking like a complete millennial. I didn't see her capturing an emotion, she basically overacts everytime the character is happy, which keeps her performance from being realistic. Also, there is so much yelling in her dialogues with her mother that it actually hurt my ears.

Although the story could have been handled better, I think this movie is definitely worth seeing. I appreciate the producers and the crew for their dedication to draw attention to this story and thereby stories like this, which is what matters at the end of the day. I also think the makeup & costume department deserves a big credit. The accuracy of period makeup and hair was just spot on.

I would recommend
ibo_show-6871424 March 2022
Growing up I listened to Bergen, she had a gift a talent, which was her voice. I was well aware of her story with her possessive husband who eventually consumed her.

I would say this was great cinematography good acting and a movie worth seeing.

My Criticism of this movie would be they could have elaborated more on her and the husbands character but that would have meant a longer movie who wants to watch a movie for three hours.

And the other being using the actual singers voice or music, as much as I praise the acting she is an actor, Bergen would not have been famous with that voice, the same mistake was made in the Muslim movie, please when making biopics of singer use their actual voice so people can understand why they got to where they did. You only hear Bergens real voice at the end of the movie.

This movie also raises an important issue woman face which is domestic violence and how far things can go if punished inadequately.

I would recommend this movie 🍿

The meaning of "honor"
aydinyahsi21 October 2023
In 1970s Turkey, the life struggle and quest for love of a talented female artist who grew up without a father. In this profoundly tragic story, set against the backdrop of family pressures and the distorted values of a male-dominated society, you will question the meaning of 'honor'. You will shed tears. When it comes to the production, the cast and the story look quite neat in overall manner. To be honest, I would expect Farah to perform a more sentimental acting, knowing her personal perspective against violence while Erdal Besikcioglu was much much better than "good". He has been always a an actor of such characters.

The film was the result of absolutely brilliant work. They have handled very well Bergen's life, psychology and the love that she feels missing and you become a part of it while watching.

poor casting and unsuccessful telling of the true story
cagkanyan4 March 2022
The movie gives you the feel of a 3-part mini-series. You can't find the happiness of watching a movie anywhere in the movie. Farah zeynep abdullah is the wrong choice because she can't quite capture the mood of a middle eastern arabesque singer. It is very clear that erdal besikcioglu took part in this movie only for money. Although I like the other films of the directors, unfortunately Bergen will be remembered as a bad biographic adaptation.

Book your tickets and watch Bergen!

Warning: Spoilers
I CANNOT get over Bergen! The movie was SO GOOD!!! They showed respect to her memory in the most perfect way! The discography was used in a way to transition you through the different phases of her story, as a non-Turk who has minimal knowledge in old Turkish songs, I was deeply touched by the songs. Farah Zeynep Abdullah's range was INSANE in this movie! The way her eyes displayed emotions throughout the movie was just 😘👌🏼

The movie was so sad, and it should leave you feeling uncomfortable and sad...it is a true story after all. Not many know who Bergen is where I'm based YET most of us left the theatre in tears cause we felt for her! What type of world cages a free woman while she's alive & dead?! The end of the movie proves that Bergen was not the last woman to go through what Bergen went through. Justice for the likes of Bergen was never served! You should leave the theatre feeling SO ANGRY, sad, uncomfortable, and deeply affected by the facts presented in the movie.

It paid tribute to Bergen in a tasteful way in my opinion.

A Touching Real Life Story
billush15 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the successful Turkish films of recent years, after Butterfly Dream, Müslüm and Ayla. The actors, Farah Zeynep Abdullah and Tilbe Saran, did a great job. A young woman, Belgin, Bergen as the stage name, has suffered greatly because of a violent, perverted and much older man whom she fell in love like a victim who loves its executoiner. She was an arabesque singer, but studied piano and cello at the conservatory in her early youth. She wanted to be loved and feel protected by that man as she lacks a father's affection. The man, who did not bear his penalty later on, did not hesitate to kill her, after he caused a lot of pain without hesitation and was finding himself justified in every way. The film tells about the Arabesque woman, Bergen, who is called the woman of pain, in a measured and heart-shaking manner without being too pathetic, without exploiting conscience. I congratulate everyone who contributed, from the director to the actor, to the cinematographer, to the screenwriter, such a brilliant movie.
