Is a killer stalking redheads?
Tweekums18 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After the body of an eighteen year old girl is found in Napa Valley the CBI are called in. Lisbon suspects she was in a relationship with her killer but Jane suspects it was somebody with a thing for redheads who was planning a sexual assault rather than murder. Her parents don't think she has a boyfriend but it soon becomes clear that she was seeing a local drug dealer, a man with clear anger issues… perhaps Lisbon was right after all. Jane still thinks he was right and organises an unauthorised undercover operation involving the red-haired Agent Grace Van Pelt as bait at the restaurant where he is convinced the killer is working.

After a good pilot episode this episode keeps up the high quality. We continue to see Jane and Lisbon coming up with rival theories concerning motives for the killing and thus the killer's identity. This is setting up a nice dynamic between the two characters. There are plenty of plausible suspects and there is a nice surprise during the final reveal. As well as a good mystery there are some good laughs too; notable when Jane illegally hypnotises a potential witness. The cast do a fine job; Simon Baker is great as Patrick Jane and Robin Tunney does an impressive job as Teresa Lisbon; Amanda Righetti, Tim Kang and Owain Yeoman are also on good form as the rest of the team; Agents Van Pelt, Rigsby and Cho. Overall this was an enjoyably second episode; I look forward to watching more of the series.

Red-haired Women

When the body of a redhaired teenager is found in a vineyard in Napa Valley, Lisbon and her team are summed to investigate the case. Soon they identify the girl, Melanie O'Keefe, and her mother Mercedes explain that her daughter was saving her virginity for her marriage. The CBI learn also that Melanie's boyfriend Hector Romerez is a local drug dealer and Lisbon suspects he killed Melanie. However, Jane believes the death was accidental and the killer is attracted by red-haired women for sexual assault. Van Pelt volunteers to be the bait to catch the killer but the plan does not work well.

"Red Hair and Silver Tape" is a good episode of "The Mentalist", with a storyline with many plot points. The duel of opinions between Jane and Lisbon is excellent; but Jane's sixth sense is the greatest attraction of this show that has also funny situations with Wayne Rigsby, Grace Van Pelt and Kimball Cho. My vote is seven.

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** Indicative of the series, Cho lets Patrick get away with hypnotizing a friend of the murdered girl that they are investigating. Lisbon figures it out, and tells him that if he does it again, he'll be a tour guide in the statehouse wearing a funny hat. Cho says he understands, but we all knew that it was NOT over. They find a serious bad guy who compares himself to a pirate, and the dead girl to a princess; like in an old story, or movie. Red herring. Also, a real neat "rock-paper-scissors" game with the Sheriff.

When Patrick sets up the trap for the killers, he also traps himself. Teresa notices something that she realizes is key to the original murder, goes back to the scene, and, well, you should really see it for yourself. Very interesting story, and it's available from Amazon. Terrific series, great acting. A solid 10.
