Going out of the universe and back in time to be young!
blanbrn19 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode 9 from season 4 of "HBO's" "Room 104" is called "The Last Man" and it's one that's strange and different as it's hard to call and get a take on. It involves two ancient warrior types who are battling it out only this episode twist when they like travel thru another time and dimension and enter "Room 104" call it going back in time to be young and be a kid again! Overall not one of the series better episodes still a watch for it's themes of "The Twilight Zone" and "Back to the Future".

What's with this season?
garychapman7221 September 2020
Please get some fresh writing talent... or send them on a vacation... or something! Anything but continue with this long drawn out death of a once-loved series.

I think it's probably fair to say that this season has really not been up to par, but at least most of the episodes rose to meet the low bar of "watchable". But "Last Man" really stands out as the low point of an embarrassingly mediocre season. It feels like they've just stopped trying : (

It's almost like 2020 has been such a bust that even the TV has just given up and embraced the suck. I'm still hopeful they can reinvigorate the writing team and rescue this for 2021, but the way this season has gone I'm half expecting the show to get cancelled... and, in it's current sorry state, a cancellation might even be a blessing. So, decision time ... either pick it up, or put it out of its misery.

Fortunately, "Inside Number 9" is still as dark and twisted as ever.

I'm only watching because I have to

This show just needs to end. Every season has had its strong and not so strong episodes, but this entire season has been one big letdown. The only episode that was actually intriguing was no dice, but the lack of any intrigue in this season has been disappointing. This episode felt like one giant waste of time

Not only the worst episode of the show, a disrespect to itself and to fans
leonleaoalves19 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This season has been a letdown, especially after how amazing the third one was, but this episode surely takes the cake when it comes to being completely awful, uninteresting and just failing to grasp the concept of the show or respect its fans.

The first half is silly to the point of being cringy, and unimaginative enough to not just be boring, but also annoying. The second half feels awfully tacked in and dragged on for far too long.

Every attempt to make a commentary on previous pieces of pop culture (such as He-Man, Highlander and musical movies) is completely bland, obvious and uninteresting, but don't worry: the last 15 seconds of the episode will try to convince you there's a "reason" for that, other than the laziness of the writer and the director.

The tackiness and bad taste of the art direction of this episode would be fine if it was in service of a narrative that was even remotely interesting, new, or had anything relevant to say: instead, it is just a backdrop to recycle silly, worthless ideas that add up to nothing at all.

The major disrespect comes at the end, when not only does the episode do an 180 to try and makes us "go along" with the fantasy by revealling it is a couple of children's imagination (or the mom's imagination?), but also begging you to forget just how ridiculous it all was, trying to tackle in some sort of "reflection" or retroactive spin to make it all seem more digestible.

It doesn't work. The previous 25 minutes were still there, and they're so badly done, so completely over-the-top, you wish they were at least forgetful so that you could pretend this whole experience never existed - which is what the episode wants you to do by the end. Too bad you can't. I certainly wish I could.

This is why there's not a season 5

I really wish I'd quit watching during season 2. There was some real brilliance. This and season 3 have been a disappointment.

And it's a musical!
davo20 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We watch this show mainly because my wife likes it. It definitely has a reliable formula whose boundaries it sometimes choses to test. Basically, the episodes take place in Room 104. For this episode, the door to the room opens onto a desert landscape. My first thought was: this is a cheat. But it's not like I really care, and when the characters appear, they are like video game warriors who are singing in a heroic manner a la Broadway. I have a weakness for musicals, which extends to musical episodes of TV series: Xena, Buffy, etc. I did not recognize the music for this episode and as of this writing there are no soundtrack credits here on IMDb. On screen, the music is credited to Julian Wass, who also directed this episode; original songs by Mark Duplass & Julian Wass. Mark Duplass is of course the show's co-creator, co-writer, and played a nihilistic folksinger in a previous episode. I am willing to believe the actors did their own singing but I wouldn't swear to it, again no credits. I am willing to accept the whole outside-the-room aspect as some kind of meta/magical gaming metaphor, why not? It's not like we're watching a documentary. Having it be musical made it fun for me.

Going to get high and watch it again!

I thought it was amazing. Quite a detour from the usual 104. I assume the other reviewers just didn't get it.

Love Sci-Fi!
billsoccer11 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I have a weakness for sci-fi so was delighted when we see the 2 time-traveling warriors. Not sure I get the ending, but it seems to encourage peaceful coexistence. To make it a musical was bold and - for me - it worked well. One of the few good-to-great episodes of season 4
