Hotline to Disaster
Eddy tricks Rolf so that he can steal a telephone that Rolf warns him is cursed. Misfortunes start befalling Eddy, and Eddy starts wondering if the phone is cursed after all. Meanwhile, Edd tries to calm him down and assures that all of these things are just a coincidence. This episode has been hotly debated, mainly because of Edd's characterization. Apparently he's at his worst here and doesn't show any sympathy to Eddy's pain. I'd say that describes him better in "Button Yer Ed", where he, Ed and Rolf subject him to a number of humiliating activities he clearly isn't happy about. Edd is a staunch disbeliever in the supernatural. In fact, after Hand Me Down Ed he may have tried to explain his boomerang-induced behavior as a part of his repressed psyche. Over the course of the series he shows that he has a little bit of an ego and looks down on everyone else, so his increasing disconcern with Eddy's wellbeing and obsession with being right is somewhat characteristic. And honestly, it's understandable. From his point of view, despite the scientific impossibility, it *is* just coincidence. And what's more, Eddy keeps bringing the curse on himself. As one reviewer said, there are things that get under Edd's skin, and his patience has limits. The episode is not just funny, it's *really* funny. The curses inflicted on Eddy are brilliantly timed. Like "Button Yer Ed", it's uncomfortable but enjoyable.
