A very realistically handled procedural with a somewhat weak conclusion! [+61%]
arungeorge1326 June 2022
Unlike how many reviewers remarked, Kuttavum Shikshayum doesn't have pacing issues. Where it does have problems is in its deadweight mystery. There isn't much going for it in terms of texturing the antagonists (as they're regular village folk), so Rajeev Ravi focuses on the atmospherics of rural Rajasthan to engage the viewer. While Asif Ali's character has some semblance of a redemption arc, the rest of the team (played by Alencier Lopez, Sunny Wayne, Senthil Krishna, and Sharafudheen) has none. The script by Sreejith Divakaran and Sibi Thomas (a cop in real life) focuses almost entirely on the finer details of the procedural. For instance, the film features multiple scenes of the team members taking turns to withhold a suspect in a hotel room.

Your enjoyment levels depend on how you take to realistic procedurals in cinema. There aren't any mass moments, punchlines, or a bombastic score. I liked the film more in the second half when the setting shifts from hilly green Kerala to rustic Rajasthan. Both scenes set in a village are particularly chilling. The unfamiliarity of faces, languages, cultures, and intents is put across in a way that someone like Rajeev Ravi truly excels at. The film has a bit of a weak, forgettable conclusion, as I didn't feel like the writers wanted to offer closure to what I'd watched for over 2 hours. Performances are uniformly good, and I wouldn't mind if Rajeev Ravi brings this team back together for a more compelling case in a sequel.

Understated, Underrated and with a rushed ending.
nihalat-2706316 July 2022
This movie was Exceptional right up until the ending. It's an engaging police procedural that takes it time. Just keep in mind that it's based on a true story and the real life counterpart of the lead is one of the writers.

It could have been one of the best movies of the year with a better executed ending. It's a shame.

Want to sleep? Then watch it.

A very realistic movie with zero entertainment value. I would have been surprised if this become a hit at theaters. There is nothing engaging in the movie. The investigation plot is too realistic with zero cinematic elements which makes it a 'sleeping pill' for most of the viewers. Really wonder what is the point in making dull films like these with talented actors, when there is no way it could attract crowd to the theaters to get the money from it.

Asif played a great role, direction is well, cinematography excelled. A realistic approach and never seen in any Malayalam film, portrayed well.

BGM also super . The flow is maintained well through out film . What is a real cop? That is portrayed well in the movie.

A realistic investigation.
SameirAli1 August 2022
If you expect a mass crime investigation thriller from Rajeev Ravi, then, this is not for you. As always, this film has a realistic touch. There are no gigantic twists and bombastic turns in the movie. Yet, a very decent thriller. Asif Ali has done a decent job after a long time, along with other actors who did their part to the best.

A very realistic police procedural
Jithindurden28 September 2023
A very realistic but engaging police procedural movie. The lack of commercial elements and the "Charithram Enniloode" episode where the real-life officer narrating the event being more thrilling made people dislike this, but to me, this was a very well-directed movie that engaged me throughout it. When the investigation moves to North India the pacing does slow down but it clearly reflects what the characters are going through and is perfectly in sync with the flow of the movie.

Narratively there are a few thematic confusion in this that I can't fully wrap my head around. I understand that the outlook is that of a non-judgemental look at the events and people while following the police who are leading the investigation. But the way a lot of the events are weaved into this, especially the last twenty minutes makes it weird. When you spend the whole movie on one side and again including a lot of elements that can be mistaken as police glorification in a realistic way, such a subtle way of showing the reality of the world is not really enough. The main characters knows their world, they know how fragile they are with their body as well as their egos but all of it is subtle details and not pronounced enough. The criminal world of these villagers is ruled by the rich, but after all this effort, that is just thrown into the conversation like nothing. So, the way the film handled its themes is lacking the power it needed to convey it properly. The ending would've worked much better if it communicated those themes better.

Technically also I had issues with some editing choices and dubbing issues were very pronounced throughout the film.

Despite all my issues with the film, I did love the way it showcased the investigation process realistically but still making it engaging and thrilling enough without any commercial elements that are usually seen in such Indian films. The use of music was perfect throughout the movie, without going overboard or underscoring. The acting was solid but felt the difference in scenes with firm direction on it and seeing some usual selves of actors in others.

Overall, loved the way the movie went on and what it set out to do but got a tiny bit disappointed at how it got realized at the end. Still a very good movie.

The director was unable to come up with the thrill while doing originality
iqbalchowki20 August 2022
Good story, tried to come up with orginality but some things in the direction failed to create thrill, the jewelry theft was not shown at all, the police dog coming, investigation and catching the thieves were all done in a very cool way, I give it a six out of ten mark.

A realistic story failed with weak Screenplay
skmenon199328 May 2022
Kuttavum Shikshayum ( Crime & Punishment ) starring Asif Ali, Alencier, Sentil Krishna, Sunny Wayne & Sharafuddin...

Verdict of the Movie: Average... 2.5/5 ⭐

Plot of the Movie: A jewelry shop robbery, case assigned to CI SAJAN alias Asif Ali. He & his team while undergoing the investigation realise the culprits belongs to another place called Dhanaganj in northern India which said to be highly violent place but how CI SAJAN & his team nabs the culprit from that dangerous place forms the rest part of the movie..

Positivity of the Movie:

1) Not by taking as a commercial film, it focuses on the pure form of reality in terms of the officers when going on a mission what all hardships they need to face etc were being showcased...

2) Asif Ali as a matured police cop had been beautifully portrayed...

3) As the title depicts if there is a crime, there has to be punishment too but after the movie, the film asks to the society that whether this statement is really being applied?? Answer will be Yes to those who don't have power of money...

Negativity Of the Movie...

1) 1st half was quite ok but second half was dragging... Being execution taken in a realistic approach, after a certain point, it fails to grab the the audience attention..

2) Sentil, Sunny Wayne, Sharafuddin being proven to be the versatile artists doesn't able to give their best shot...

Overall an average one time watchable movie

Movie will be premiered on Netflix.

Completely Realistic Movie
When Sibi Sir spoke about this incident in an interview. I was terribly excited to know how they might be going through each day. This was the main reason to go and watch the movie. It's as real as I imagined it to be. I feel proud of them when I know the plight of the police with real life.

This movie is sooo boring, so much lag I watched this in the theatre and just wanted to get out😭. It's not worth your time if you like slow paced movies maybeee you'll like it. There's nothing really happening here especially the ending it's soo disappointing. I lost my money by booking a ticket for this movie. I don't understand how this movie is action and thriller genre, there's nothing thrilling and 0 action in the movie.

Chasing on always
Moviebuff_Chennai5 July 2022
After 20 mins, I felt like seeing the Deeran Adhikaram ondru(tamil movie). Yes a similar kind of story to find the robbers who are from north India. Their village is a violence prone zone and few policemen from South to identify and catch.

This is a mission and it was shot like it is very easy and each policemen will support other one. But I don't believe it as the fact - other state policemen, mainly one from North India don't help or support a police operation from South. If it is just to be seen as a movie - it's ok. But why I mention here is because, the movie state as "based on true event".

It's obvious that law and order police always are busy and chase criminals all their lifetime.

Nice to see when flaws are ignored.

A disappointment
raifuzz4 July 2022
The movie shares similar theme as a Tamil movie named Dheeran Athigaram Ondru.

The disappointment was that, it had a good cast who portrayed police officers well, especially the senior actor in the Bashir character. To call it a thriller will be wrong, more like a piece of life kinda movie.

The end was confusing as well as massive understatement regarding the whole event that took place.

Dragging but one time watchable
crravikiran21 July 2022
There is no storyline as such. But it's one time watchable for efficiency of police and the process to catch intra state culprits. All actors acted very well.

Pragmatic and logical thriller
sreeharivenat10 December 2023
Kuttavum Shikshayum adequately displays the challenges which confronts a cop in their daily life. Asif Ali appears as CI Sajan Philip who is appointed to lead a task force for a manhunt operation of a gang who are wanted for jewel heist. The rest of the movie revolve around their hunt for the accused.

People who enjoy the realistic side of Cinemas can definitely enjoy this movie. The whole movie paces in that manner by displaying the hardships and the procedures of Kerala police. Those who expect an action-packed manhunt movie like Theeran will be disappointed as I did. But it does paint an image of what actual cop life is.

The last 10 mins still leaves me question.
toby_philips26 June 2022
Mediocre plot but the story develops every minute with engaging police investigation procedures, thrillls, behavioural acting, minimalistic cinematography, avoidance of unwanted drama and cliches, the script was not any character centric but plot centric and we'll executed. It sounded like a real cops canned in action. But one may keep asking themself a question that was it that easy to apprehend the culprits because the raid scene was just a cakewalk and would contemplate the real life experiences of those who really took the actual culprits then. Asif Ali seemed a wrong pod in the pea but then gradually wins the confidence just because his character did not any over the top significance unlike so called Bolly/Tolly/Kollywood compeers. That's the beauty and I personally contented that this was in my vernecular. Rajiv Ravi and Siby Thomas, Suresh Rajan and Dawn Vincent takes the cake.

linear plot lacking 'ginger'
ngandacinema15 November 2023
We had more anticipation than the story itself. Kuttavum Shikshayum was a linear plot with no 'ginger' 😟

DELICIOUS

-The movie exposed the plight of dedicated police officers who jeopardize their lives for little gain and recognition.

-Good pick of the different rural locations in North India that looked intimidating, creating a fear of the unknown and unexpected

-We appreciated the camaraderie and solidarity between Sajan and his teammates. Alone in a foreign land, they kept strong despite the hardships

BLAND

-The film lacked a parallel story; hence, we had to see the same faces from beginning to end.

We didn't even have an insight into the officers' personal lives outside the theft case; plus, the investigation became very extended that it was a bit challenging to concentrate.

-Acting was ordinary, not exciting or engaging

-The movie could have possessed stronger dialogues to make its point heard about the treatment of police officers...

Everything was great except the climax!!
vishnu_unnikrishnan21 August 2022
This is an nth style of making by Rajeev Ravi, who doesn't like to repeat what he made previously. And I really liked the entire film for no reason. The characters, realism and slow pace of an investigation in its extreme originlity is very pleasing to watch. But the problem is with the climax. The climax, literaly have collapsed the entire thriller.

Crime patrol episode in a movie
opotraining16 July 2022
This is just another 1hr crime patrol episode which is stretched to 130 mins. The police really solved the case in first 50 mind and the rest of the movie is how they nabbed them.

Ok, but...
jinufrancis110 September 2023
This film is such a realistic film which shows the police life as it is. The work, the sweat the different types of characters who have to come together and the stress. Running for your life and putting your life in peril all for nothing most of the time. Then the next case begins.

No one knows who is going to get out of this alive you just keep running.

Police life as it is without gimmicks being used to solve cases with no high fi teams, no fancy gadgets, no slow motion walks and no great dialogue just hard work.

Kudos team... none of you may read this but it makes me happy to write this.

No thrill, no entertainment
vjnambu19 November 2022
In Kasargod, a jewellery shop gets robbed and Inspector Sajan Philip (Asif Ali) is assigned its iinvestigation, who is suffering from depression after accidentally shooting a protester. Sajan finds out that a robbery is done by a north Indian team from dhanaganj. So he travels with his team to dhanaganj in order to grab the culprits. Rest of the film is how they catch the culprits.

The plus points of kuttavum shikshayum is asif Ali's acting which is hands down his most finest performance. He looks and behaves exactly like a no nonsense cop. The story is very interesting and the locations are real.

While the story is interesting, the screenplay is absolutely flat which runs at a snail pace. Another drawback is wasting the talent of established actors like sharafudeen, sunny Wayne and sethil Krishna. Films like unda had a similar narrative style but that film explored each and every characters well. But in kuttavum shikshayum except asif Ali's character none of the supporting characters are fleshed out. This is based on a real life incident narrated by sibi sir in safari channel. I heard his storytelling was thrilling in safari but rajeev Ravi failed to make it thrilling on screen.
