Well worth seeing...and a bit sad.

Oddly, the cast listing for this episode doesn't mention who narrated the show. However, I am pretty sure it's Jimmy Smits--it sure sounded like him. Just to be sure, I re-watched the DVD to verify who it was and my impression was correct. Yippee!

This episode of "The American Experience" was about an American athlete and hero, Roberto Clemente. While today he's forgotten by many or only known for his tragic death, the film also discussed what it was like for Clemente during his major league baseball career. In particular, his early days playing in the Majors were tough, as he was black and his native language was Spanish---making it tough to communicate with his teammates as well as the Pittsburgh fans. This, combined with his hurt over issues of racism made for a many who was angry. However, despite this, he sublimated these feelings--into a great player on the field as well as a man who spoke up for equality. All in all, an admirable guy and a great American--attested to by the many people interviewed for this show.

All in all, a very inspiring and sad episode--well worth watching regardless of whether you are black, Hispanic or Chinese!
