Wasted Opportunity.

The battle of Midway, which was a monumental victory for the US Navy and its intelligence unit, is widely described as the turning point of the war in the Pacific. It's a popular narrative. We won, despite a number of very important flaws in our operations that are usually overlooked. Still, a great battle.

This is the only episode of Battlefield 360 that I've watched.

The images we see, and the facts behind them, couldn't be of more historical importance, and yet -- if this episode is emblematic -- it's treated as if it were a commercial aimed at spoiled fourteen year olds.

The 3D effects are magnificent and the combat footage gripping. But each shot last only a few seconds. Shot follows shot at speeds found only on greyhound race tracks, and each cut (forget dissolves) is accompanied by a loud WHAM on the sound track, as if someone's attention might have wandered during a commercial for an energy drink or a brand of tennis shoes.

Early TV marketing tests ran experiments on the use of rapidly alternative black and white images on the screen. The technique was attention-getting, true, but in the same way as being hit on the noggin with a hammer gets your attention. The focus group was so annoyed that they voted it down and the device was never used in commercials. You will, however, find it here. All this teen-aged junk has made the episode, and I assume the entire series, almost unwatchable.

Want to see a far less dramatic description of Midway, but made for adults? Watch the Battlefield series. I believe the episode dealing with Midway is available free on YouTube. Then compare that with THIS.

Subject: Important as hell. Technique: Sux.
